Hobcaw Barony Wildlife Refuge Offers History and Beauty
Hobcaw Barony is a 17,500-acre wildlife refuge owned and operated by Belle W. Baruch Foundation, a non-profit organization. Made as a royal land grant in 1718, Hobcaw Barony was eventually subdivided into 14 individual plantations. It became the winter residence of Wall Street millionaire and presidential adviser Bernard Baruch. Mr. Baruch's daughter, Belle, purchased all of the barony over a period of several years and at her death a foundation was created to use the land for the purposes of teaching and/or research in forestry, marine biology, and the care and propagation of wildlife, flora and fauna in connection with colleges and/or universities in the state of South Carolina.

Joseph McGill Visits Hampton Plantation and Hobcaw Barony
Joseph McGill, founder of The Slave Dwelling Project, is visiting Friendfield Village at Hobcaw Barony March 19-20, 2015. The Slave Dwelling Project’s mission is to identify and assist property owners, government agencies and organizations to preserve extant slave dwellings. McGill often stays overnight in existing slave dwellings.
On March 20 at 5:00PM EST, Dr. Valinda Littlefield, Associate Professor of History at the University of South Carolina, will host a panel discussion and social media talkback with McGill, Lee Brockington, Hobcaw Senior Interpreter; and Robert McClary, a former resident of Friendfield Village.

Coast Guard medically evacuates injured fisherman
- CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coast Guard medically evacuated an injured fisherman off the coast of Georgetown, S.C., Thursday June 20, 2011.
Search and rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Charleston were notified at 7:09 a.m., via VHF Channel 16 by the man, asking for medical assistance after sustaining an injury while fishing around the mouth of the North Santee River near Georgetown, SC.
A Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Air Facility Charleston arrived on scene at 8:09 a.m. and transported the victim to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
