Hochpustertal, Südtirol - Alta Pusteria, Alto Adige - South Tyrol
The peaks that dominate the Alta Pusteria landscapes are among the most impressive of the entire Dolomite range: here you’ll find the extremely famous
Tre Cime (Three Peaks) and the world’s largest natural sundial, whose rocky peaks (all at elevations of around 3,000 meters), respectively, mark nine, ten, eleven, twelve and one o'clock. In the valleys you’ll find the villages of Sesto/Sexten, San Candido/Innichen, Dobbiaco/Toblach, Villabassa/Niederdorf and the Braies Valley, which is known for its warm hospitality and especially popular with families. The magnificent mountain valleys of Alta Pusteria lie nestled amidst the UNESCO
World Heritage Dolomites.

Dolomiten, Südtirol - Dolomiti, Alto Adige - Dolomites, South Tyrol
The Dolomites, also known as the Pale Mountains, are a mountain range in Italy’s eastern Alps. In 2009, the Executive Committee of UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention declared the Dolomites a World Heritage Site.
The Dolomites were built; they were formed over time by algae and petrified coral reefs. For 250 million years they thrived in the Tethys Sea and then – when the water receded – they rose to the heavens, majestic, bizarre and white: pale mountains, indeed, quite different from all their neighbors. In 1788, scientists discovered the reason for their pale color: the Dolomites are composed of a double carbonate made of calcium and magnesium.
They are all famous, but perhaps the most so are the triad of peaks known as the Tre Cime, which immediately traveled all around the world on postcards; meanwhile, climber-director Luis Trenker, from the Gardena Valley, erected a monument to Sassolungo, immortalizing it in his films. The Dolomites have been inhabited since the Iron Age, and you’ll find traces here of Rhaetians, Romans and Lombards. The World War I battlefront between Austria and Italy ran through these mountains as well. The inhabitants of these mountains are called Ladins, and represent the most ancient people of the Dolomites and South Tyrol’s third language group.

Sexten Dolomites Travel
Sexten Dolomites Travel - The Tre Cime di Lavaredo also called the Drei Zinnen (German, literally three merlons), are three distinctive battlement-like peaks, in the Sexten Dolomites of northeastern Italy. They are probably one of the best-known mountain groups in the Alps. The three peaks, from east to west, are:
Cima Piccola/Kleine Zinne (little peak)
Cima Grande/Große Zinne (big peak)
Cima Ovest/Westliche Zinne (western peak).
The peaks are composed of well-layered dolostones of the Dolomia Principale (Hauptdolomit) formation, Carnian to Rhaetian in age, as are many other groups in the Dolomites (e.g., the Tofane, the Pelmo or the Cinque Torri).
Until 1919 the peaks formed part of the border between Italy and Austria. Now they lie on the border between the Italian provinces of Bolzano-Bozen and Belluno and still are a part of the linguistic boundary between German-speaking and Italian-speaking majorities. The Cima Grande has an elevation of 2,999 metres (9,839 ft). It stands between the Cima Piccola, at 2,857 metres (9,373 ft), and the Cima Ovest, at 2,973 metres (9,754 ft). SOURCE : WIKIPEDIA
