Footage of the Mornington cable car in Dunedin, New Zealand. This includes the last trip up High Street on Saturday, 2 March 1957.

“It was a moving moment as the last cable-car to Mornington made its historic journey up High St soon after 3 o’clock this afternoon. The words of the city’s veteran gripman, Mr Jack Johnston, that he felt ‘very, very sad’ witnessed the feelings of many of the crowd who turned out to witness the gaily decorated car – now the relic of another era.
Before the flag bedecked veteran – car 101 – appeared at the foot of High St for the final trip, other cable-cars plied back and forth with crowds reminiscent of the 5 o’clock rush to which the cars have become accustomed since the inauguration of the service almost three-quarters of a century ago.
When the big moment arrived, crowds struggled for positions on the car and several people packed on the roof. To the accompaniment of its bell, the car slowly glided away, preceded by four members of the Dunedin Ladies Highland Pipe Band playing ‘Marian’s Wedding’. At Manse St, they too boarded the veteran.
Reaching the top of High St, the car passed over several detonators and came to a stop. An even larger crowd at the carsheds greeted the veteran with lusty cheers. Again the pipers preceded the car as it covered the last 100 yards to the sheds.
At this stage the gripman realised that someone had souvenired the bell.
When the car had been turned on the turntable and wheeled into the sheds, many in the crowd sang ‘Now is the hour’ and so passed another link with the city’s history.

Royal Tour, Dunedin 1954
Residents of Maori Hill celebrate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II as part of her tour of New Zealand. The footage was recorded in Drivers Road, and the royal car passes at the end of the clip.

The Kaikorai Cable Tram
The Kaikorai cable tramway service began in October 1900 and ended on 31 July 1947. This 1947 film was made by Dunedin amateur film maker William Hood Davidson (1894-1979).

The manufacture of Milburn Portland cement at the company's works, Burnside, Dunedin
This footage from around the 1930s shows the works, buildings, employees and work processes. Chapters read, 'Burnside marl quarry where one of the raw materials is obtained', 'Marl is washed to form a slurry and pumped to storage silo', 'Limestone from Milburn and Dunback quarries being unloaded by tippler and conveyed to storage', 'Limestone and marl mixed in correct proportions and pulverized to a fine slurry', 'Slurry is pumped to holding and correcting silos and is agitated and mixed by compressed air', 'Slurry is fed to rotary kiln (200 feet long) and fused to a clinker', 'Lignite small coal obtained from the Mines of Otago and Southland, is passed through a rotary dryer, pulverized and blown into the furnace of the rotary kiln', 'The cement clinker is cooled, weighed and conveyed to storage'.
