The amazing graves of Hofskirkja Church, Iceland.
I came to see the small but perfectly formed Hofskirkja Church. I wasn't expecting to see the unique (?) raised graves in the graveyard beside the church.
The Hofskirkja Church is one of only six turf/earth roofed churches that remain in Iceland. It is very close to the ring road and so a popular stopping point for ring road tourists.
The graves appear to have been constructed with a large mound above the normal ground level because the topsoil layer is extremely thin due to the volcanic rock below.

Hofskirkja turf church - Iceland
On the edge of Europe's greatest glacier, Vatnajökull, lies a nineteenth century turf church called Hofskirkja. It is by the Ring Road, on a farmstead called Hof.
From the early days of settlement until the 20th century, turf houses were the main form of Icelandic architecture.

The Last Turf Church Ever Built In Iceland
Hofskirkja was the last Iceland turf church built in the old architectural style. Its walls are thick and assembled of rocks to give stability as well as insulation, an important element to consider in the Icelandic climate. The roof is made of stone slabs and covered in turf. It is one of six churches in Iceland still standing, which are preserved as historical monuments. Records say that the church was built by the carpenter Páll Pálsson, while the lock and hinges of the church door were made by Þorsteinn Gissurarson, who was a well-known blacksmith from Hof.

It is located on the Route 1 southwest of Höfn, in the narrow strip between the sea coast and the glacier.
A notаble building in Hof is a turf church, which was built in 1883 and is the youngest turf church in Iceland. Since 1951, it belongs to the National Museum of Iceland.

VIDIMYRI, TURF CHURCH, ICELAND
VIDIMYRI, TURF CHURCH, ICELAND
The Vidimyri Turf Church is one of the most beautiful churches, which is a great testimony of the long era of architecture, typical for Iceland, at the period when all the buildings were made of stones and turf. The Church of Vidimyri is located in Skagafjordur, and was built in 1836, being used nowadays for religious services. This amazing church is made of stones and turf, in 1936 being preserved and belonged to National Museum. The old and unique church is a National Museum, a very significant cultural monument, which is opened during summer, the rest of years, for a special verger takes care of it. Built from a mixture of turf and driftwood, it looks like the most strange religious structure that you have ever seen. The Danish altar of the church dates back form 1616. The architectural style is very strange, based on a lack of natural resources. The Vidimyri Turf Church is one of the six turf churches that still exist in Iceland. It was well preserved during the time, being protected as a monument, and still works as a parish church, where the prayers can find the perfect atmosphere dedicated to prayers to God.
