Travel with me: Exploring fantastical Hogsback
Run away with the fairies and stroll through the forests in this quaint and quirky South African village named after the nearby Hogsback mountains. Some say that the surrounding forests inspired J.R.R. Tolkien's books... and while it may not be factually correct, the inhabitants have embraced the mystical and artistic legacy. Slowriding in Hogsback, Eastern Cape
SLOW RIDING® -- AN AMATHOLA ADVENTURE.
A leisurely bicycle ride through the beautiful countryside of the Eastern Cape.
Day 1 - Sunday 28th April Hogsback to Thomas River - 83km
We began our adventure with a short climb , as we followed the dirt track and watched the sun break through the early morning mist and paint gold streaks across the craggy face of Gaika's Kop. The scenery on the Happy Valley route (it's well named!) is spectacular and we kept stopping to take pics -- the riding is gentle -- long gradients that allow for bird watching, flower spotting and conversation as we followed the road across the open countryside, the hills running blue in the distance. A quick refreshment stop at the Wagon Wheel in Cathcart, up the N6 to the turn-off at the top of the climb and into the 31000 hectares of the Thomas River Conservancy Area.
Visited the Rock Art Centre checked out some of the vintage cars
Day 2 - Monday 29th April Thomas River via Gubu Dam, Keiskammahoek to Cata - 60km
We soon got back into the rhythm and rode on over cattle grids and past fields of sheep to the gate of Ailsa farm. We stopped to admire the view of the Gubu Dam over the treetops of the Kologha Forest Reserve
Cata is a wow! Our tent camp has been set up right at the top, in the grassed lapa area overlooking a beautiful crescent valley and the village below. Today it is thriving model of integrated community-driven development which includes an agricultural co-operative, forestry, nature and bird projects and a modern rural tourism offering.
Day 3 - Tuesday 30th April
Cata to Hogsback -- 56km
The last day of our ride.Through Keiskammahoek and on to the Sandile Dam road that runs over the top of the dam wall. What a sight -- the water of the Sandile Dam winds around hilly outcrops in a series of s-bends and it gleams and glistens where it lies in the deep ravines of the Wolf River Valley.
And then we left the forest behind and rode up and over the crest -- the Hogsback Mountains -- Hog 1,2 and 3 on our right.
But we are hooked, and back at work, we can't wait to tell people that we pedaled 200km through the Amathola Mountains
SLOW RIDING® You can't explain the experience. You have to live it. You've got to be there.
Road trip South Africa 2010 - part 2/5
This is a video I made of a road trip 3 friends and I made through beautiful South Africa over January 2010. The month long trip started in Johannesburg. First stop was Umhlanga and then all the way to Cape Town along the coastal route and back to JHB. It was an amazing experience and will never be forgotten! Hopefully this video will inspire others to make there next adventure South Africa you will not be disappointed!
The trip was more or less planned as we went along. We literally booked our accommodation as we were driving to the next spot thats the beauty of doing this during off peak season, as we didnt have to book in advance we could stay more nights at places we liked and skip the ones we didnt. Besides a dodgy backpacker in Ireland, the whole backpacking experience was new to me. And I absolutely loved it! The backpackers all had there own style and always one big party. From now on I say no thanks to hotels and hell yeah to backpackers!! It was also real easy to find a good backpacker thanks to 2 wee gems known as the Alternative route and Coast to Coast free backpackers guides that list and rate all the backpackers in South Africa.
So the stops we made are as follows
Geoff and I left Joburg and met up with Candice and Niel in Umhlanga.
Next Day we left Umhlanga and headed to Coffee Bay. This was meant to be about a 6 hour journey which ended up taking 12 hours as we thought it was a good idea to follow a GPS. It wasnt a good idea! The GPS took us on the 4 hour dirt road through rivers and pretty much the middle of nowhere at night! Luckily we had enough fuel and enough spare tyres! We stayed at a backpacker called Coffee shack AWESOME!
Next stop was Buccaneers in Chintsa. Cool spot with awesome backpacker. Abit quite but im sure it get really wild during the busier times.
Next was East London. Didnt really like it too much and the backpacker we were recommended didnt have secure parking so we ended up staying at a not so nice spot just for a night.
Next day we went inland to Hogs Back Awesome! We went for a 2hr hike through the forest and ended up being lost for more than half the day!
After finding our way we headed to Addo Elephant park. Really cool. Got play with elephants, snakes, meerkats and other creatures.
Next was Lungile backpackers in Port Elizabeth. Lots of tasty sea food, diving and surfing!
Island vibe in Jefferys bay was probably my favourite stop of the trip. Lots of partying and lots of surfing for the ones that can handle the hangovers.
Next up Storms river. We wanted to do the black water tubing here but unfortunately the river was dried up due to a drought. But we made up for that by doing the worlds highest bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge 216 metres!
Definitely the hottest day of the trip was spent Natures Vally. Not sure what the temperature was but it was close to unbearable!
Next was Plettenburg Bay. Really nice but also really expensive. Its also the location of the most awesome experience of my life the tandem skydive. Apparently its one of the most scenic drop zones as well.
Next Island vibe in Knysna. Really cool and different town. Unfortunately the weather wasnt so good.
Next we went to Hermanus which is the lowest part of Africa and where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean meet.
And last but not least Cape Town. Unfortunately we lost most our photos from Cape Town. Another let down was that the photos of the diving in the aquarium were taking in black and white.

EDventure International ~ What will you do in your Summer Break? ..... South Africa
A little sample of our EDventure team at work in South Africa.
What were we actually doing for the community...??
Our EDventure crew were inspired by a man warmly known as Mzwamadoda Wellington Kangapi, who lives in a small village near Mooiplaas on the Wild Coast of South Africa.
We came together as part of a 'Make an Impact EDventure Project' a joint venture with our local partners in Cintsa to create a classroom for the Crèche/Kindergarten at the Gwewgesha Day Care Center.
Together with Wellington and his family we learnt so much of the local Xhosa culture, language, customs, cuisine and their incredibly hospitable nature. We made mud bricks with the dirt from his front yard; we created mortar and rendering mix from concrete and sand from the riverbed; we used off cuts from our work to make benches for the classroom; we laid a path with loose stones, cut down the grass and created an engaging and welcoming educational environment by painting the building full of colourful educational murals. The excited children of the village were exuberant by our presence. They joined us throughout our days, playing cricket with us during breaks, swinging on their playground, and shovelling right alongside us on occasion.
We were so humbled to be able to create such a needed classroom for the Crèche and for a man who truly is driven to improve the lives and opportunities for the next generation in his community. Wellington is a man who saw a way he could help improve his village, and provide easier access to education, and through his humble passion, was able to galvanise each of us to help him build it. It truly was an experience where we learned so much from connecting with this lovely man and his community, and hope we gave to him as much as he gave to us.
As Madia said Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. Thank you Madiba!
