The Hohenzollern Bridge (Hohenzollernbrücke) is a bridge crossing the river Rhine in the German city of Cologne (Köln). It crosses the Rhine at kilometre 688.5. Originally, the bridge was both a railway and street bridge, however, after its destruction in 1945 and its subsequent reconstruction, it was only accessible to rail and pedestrian traffic.
It is the most heavily used railway bridge in Germany, connecting the Köln Hauptbahnhof and Köln Messe / Deutz stations with each other.
The Hohenzollern Bridge was one of the most important bridges in Germany during World War II; even under consistent daily airstrikes the bridge was not badly damaged. On 6 March 1945, German military engineers blew up the bridge when Allied troops began their assault on Cologne.
After the war, reconstruction was quickly organized; by 8 May 1948, the Hohenzollern Bridge was accessible by pedestrians again. Over the next eleven years the bridge was improved until by 1959 it was usable without any impairment. During the 1980s, the bridge was renovated with two new tracks. The Hohenzollern Bridge now regularly has over 1200 trains pass through daily. The bridge is regarded as an important part of Cologne as it connects Cologne's central station with major European cities on the other side of the Rhine.
The total length of the Hohenzollern Bridge is 409.19 meters (1,342.5 ft).
Since 2008 people have placed love padlocks on the fence between the sidewalk and the tracks. Dutch band Nits dedicated a song to this in the song Love Locks from their 2012 album Malpensa.
This video features views of the bridge from both side of the River Rhine, and from both sides of the bridge, as well as views from both sides of the bridge, and also from underneath the bridge.
It features a great deal of rail traffic on the bridge, which is predominantly Deutshce Bahn ICE, regional and local s-bahn passenger services, this has been filmed from a number of angles. The video also extensively features the love locks which cover the bridge, as well as the river traffic including passenger and freight boats and barges.
A Walk Across Hohenzollern Bridge, Cologne, Germany - 26th August 2013
We called in Cologne on our way back from Bonn to Düsseldorf Airport. Cologne is definitely in my favourite world cities, and my second favourite city in Germany, after Dresden of course!
Anyway this video picks up a little after my last one left off. We got off the cable car in the Rheinpark, and headed for Hohenzollernbrücke, the magnificient rail bridge which spans the River Rhine from the East Bank and Congress Centre to the West Bank and Hauptbahnhof.
The video features views towards the bridge, views of the very Gothic Cologne Cathedral or Kölner Dom as it is known locally, views of the River Rhine and some interesting river traffic including a construction vessel complete with heavy lifting arm.
The views of the bridge are the video's focal point, with the passing rail track and thousands of love locks being a main theme of the video. This is the busiest rail bridge in Germany, and it has been targeted by thousands of romantic couples to declare their love. I wonder how many of those couples have lasted as long as their love lock!?

A Walk Across Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne - 9th November, 2011
The Hohenzollern Bridge (German: Hohenzollernbrücke) is a bridge crossing the river Rhine in the German city of Cologne (Köln). This video features footage taken on a walk across the bridge from the Triangle Tower to Köln Hauptbahnhof. It features a number of passing Deutsche Bahn trains including local, regional and ICE services, as well as images of thousands of love padlocks that have been attached to the bridge, ships passing beneath the bridge, the River Rhine, Köln Cathedral, statues, sculptures and Köln Hauptbahnhof.

If you are in love you just have to walk through the Hohenzollern Bridge ( Cologne - Germany ) and put a lock with your initials there among thousands of other locks. The most hip spot for lovers in Cologne.
Hohenzollern Bridge ( Cologne - Germany ) is one of 7 in town but most likely the nicest, leading directly to the Dom ( CATHEADRAL) and the historic town, . The Cologne Triangle a large Tower with a sight seeing platform on top. The bridge itself connects most European Trains in one of Europe biggest train stations as the city lies in the heart of it.
Hohenzollern Bridge ( Cologne - Germany ) looks impressive from the river, but you can walk across it to the other side of Cologne. If you are into railways, it's a bit of a paradise, continual movements into Cologne's huge station. The walkway fence must have thousands of love locks on it, some quite interesting, and must weigh several tonnes. Great views of he cathedral.
There are 2,000 years of history in Cologne - Germany , and visitors here will find everything from Roman towers to Gothic churches to fine examples of modern architecture. Cologne has a variety of museums, too—check out the Museum of Applied Art, the Museum Ludwig and, if you have a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Museum. Be forewarned, though—the gift shop at the latter will utterly ruin your diet.

Of the seven bridges that cross the majestic Rhine river in Cologne, the Hohenzollernbrücke is the most famous thanks in part to its location near the cathedral. It is also the oldest bridge, built between 1907 and 1911. During Roman times the Rhine river formed the northeastern border of the Roman Empire. The width and strong current of the river provided an engineering challenge for the construction of a bridge. This didn't deter the Roman dictator Julius Caesar and between 53 and 55 BC his army built two bridges across the river to facilitate his war against Germanic tribes.
The first bridge that crossed the Rhine in Cologne was built around 310 AD, during the reign of Constantine the Great and connected the city with a newly built military camp across the river in Deutz. The wooden bridge was about 420 meters long. Some of the foundations of this early bridge are on display in the Römisch-Germanisches Museum.
After the fall of the Roman empire it would take another 1500 years before a new bridge was constructed here. In 1822 a wooden pontoon bridge was built at the site of the current Hohenzollernbrücke. The bridge rested on a series of barges and was raised several times a day to allow the passage of boats. In 1855 the pontoon was replaced with the Dombrücke (Cathedral Bridge), the first permanent bridge since Roman times. This bridge, a lattice truss bridge with three spans, opened in 1859. It had two railway tracks and two lanes for car-traffic. Monumental neo-Gothic towers marked the entrances to the bridge.
By the early twentieth century the bridge had become too small to handle the increasing railway traffic and the construction of a new, larger bridge started in 1907. The new bridge, named Hohenzollernbrücke after the Hohenzollern dynasty, was inaugurated in 1911 by emperor Wilhelm II. The bridge had four railway tracks as well as a two lane road and was supported by three monumental iron truss arches. Massive neo-Roman portals with large towers were built on either side of the bridge, decorated with equestrian statues of kings and emperors.
Between 1985 and 1988 the bridge was renovated and widened. It is now a rail bridge with six tracks, and due to its location near the main train station about 1200 trains pass here every day. A pedestrian walkway allows visitors who don't mind the constant rumbling of train traffic to cross the Rhine for a beautiful view of the skyline of Cologne.
On either side of the bridge are two equestrian statues on large pedestals. The statues on the Cologne side of the bridge depict Emperor Frederick III and Emperor William II. Both were created by the Prussian sculptor Louis Tuaillon. On the Deutz side of the bridge are statues of King Frederick William IV, created by Gustav Blaeser, and Emperor William I, created by Friedrich Drake.

German trains crossing the Rhine on the Hohenzollern Bridge at Cologne, Germany
We were advised by local guides that some 1200 trains cross this bridge over the Rhine River in Cologne, Germany every day on their way to and from the train stations. This is the Hohenzollern Bridge also known as the Love Locks Bridge because it contains tens of thousand of padlocks signifying love between people. I will post some separate video of the locks when I walked across it, and that video will show some more trains a lot closer up. This is a 6 track bridge--that explains the volume of trains on it. When I was filming this, mainly from our ship the Viking Kara, you literally couldn't go a minute without another train coming on to the bridge. Amazing. FYI, I have just posted an extended version of this video with the same title that omits some extraneous scenes not involving trains and which also adds a sequence of additional trains I inadvertently omitted from this original post.

Crossing Hohenzollern Bridge into Cologne Main Station, Germany - 24th August, 2013
Hohenzollern Bridge or Hohenzollernbrücke as it is called in Germany, is Germany's busiest railway bridge, which pretty much makes it europe's busiest railway bridge. It is a marvellous feat of engineering that spans the river rhine into Cologne (Köln) main railway station (hauptbahnhof). I have crossed this bridge on dozens of ocasions, by train and on foot, and i cannot help but film it's majestic frame.
On this journey we were travelling from Düsseldorf to Bonn on an inter city train, which crossed hohenzollern bridge. The video shows the bridge structure, which has been sadly graffitied, along with other trains on the bridge and finally the arrival at Köln Hauptbahnhof.

On our way home from Germany Vance and I stopped off for a few hours in Cologne. This video shows the view from the iconic railway bridge which crosses the Rhine immediately east of the Hauptbahnhof.

Located on the banks of Rhine River, North Rhine-Westphalia state, Cologne is both ancient and modern, severely damaged during the World War II, with history dating back to Roman times.

Other places not featured in this video, worth visiting in nice weather are the Botanical garden and the Zoo in the north of the city. There is also the Cable car that is a great way to see the city from above (it operates only from April-October and it was closed during my visit).
