Top 5 Things to do in Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is only 40 km South of Da Nang in Central Vietnam. It’s an old trading town and served as a center of trade between South-East Asia and East Asia and the inland regions of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand due to it’s location along the Thu Bon River.
The history of the town starts with the Champa Kingdom and was the commercial center of the Kingdom before it shifted to Nha Trang futher South and trading activity declined.
Only in 1595 the trading post of Hoi An was officially established by the Nguyen dynasty which focused heavily on trade. Soon after, Hoi An became the most important trading town in the South-East Asia with merchants from China, Japan, India and Europe doing trading missions to the city.
This mix of cultures all collided in Hoi An and resulted in an unique heritage site in Vietnam. With the sharp decline of trading activity in the 19th century, Hoi An declined into poverty which in turn meant that Hoi An remained largely untouched in the last 200 years.
The remaining wooden structures and street lay-out are still original and a perfect example of 18th century town development. The most important example of foreign influence is the Japanese bridge (with pagoda) which connects two parts of the town.
Due to the increasing number of tourists and its narrow streets, the ancient town is no longer accessible by car or motorbike which greatly contributes to the atmosphere in the town.
The town has become a major touristic mecca in Vietnam and is filled with tailor shops who’ll make suits, cocktail dresses or the traditional Ao Dai in the size and color of your choosing. Small trinkets and the typical night lanterns can be found on any street corner.
Hoi An also caters to food lovers with delicious street food dishes such as Cau Lau (noodle soup), Com Ga (chicken rice), Banh Hoa Hong Trang (White Rose cake) or the best Banh Mi in Vietnam (a sandwich made for over 50 years by one lady known as the Queen of Banh Mi, ask me for the address of her shop). For the kitchen stars among you, Hoi An also offers many cooking classes which make use of local produce.
The area around the town can be easily discovered by bicycle. You will find small farms, spice gardens, fishing boat makers, tailor workshops etc. spread around in between the rice fields.
Hoi An beach or An Bang beach is only 6 km away from the old city center and can be compared to the beaches found in Da Nang.

Ting Ting and I (Trevor James, The Food Ranger), made our way to Vietnam solely to eat street food. Since we love street food around the world, we decided that Vietnam was the perfect holiday destination for street food to try, because it's supposed to be the best and we love watching new street food recipes and street food flavors as we adventure down deep, back alleyways, getting lost into new street food worlds. So far, in our Vietnamese street food tour series, we've eaten street food in Hanoi, and then we took the sleeper train south 12 hours to Hue. Hue is the old ancient capital of Vietnam, and is packed full of different street food to try. We spent 4 days here eating and couldn't get enough of all the street food. Asian street food is the best, and in Vietnam, it doesn't get any better!
We found 11 different Vietnamese street foods in this video. If you arrive here looking to eat, you can follow along with these addresses:
1) Bun Bo hue @02:44- The specialty street food Beef and pork broth noodle soup of Hue, Vietnam - It’s absolutely rich and delicious! Found at the Dong Ba market early morning around 730am. Go to the outside of the street market and find the old ladies with big pots of good street food and you’ll discover a ton!
2) Bun Hen @ 06:10 Spicy Clam noodle soup - Also found at the Dong Ba Market in Hue, Vietnam, in the early morning! Just look around the outside of the market, the perimeter, not on the inside.
3) Banh Tam Banana Leaf @ 09:44 wrapped around marinated shrimp - Found directly beside the Bun Hen at Dong Ba market
4) Veg Soup @ 11:27 - Also found at Dong Ba Street Food Market in Hue, Vietnam
5) Bun Tith Nuong @ 14:37 Grilled pork over top of rice noodles. These was my favorite meal from Hue, and so cheap at 10,000 Vietnamese dong! Bun Thit Nuong 66 Bạch Đằng
6) Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich @ 17:55- This one was quite average. But still fun to eat! This one was at the intersection of Xuan 68 and Le Thanh Ton street inside Hue’s old city.
7) Douhua Silken Tofu @ 21:27 - This was a street food vendor carrying the food on wooden poles, so you have to be lucky at the right place at the right time. We were at the location below around 4:30 PM and she came along.
8) Banh Tran Truong “Vietnamese Pizza made from rice paper” @ 22:54. You can find this one inside the old city on 14 Le Thanh Ton Street in Hue, Vietnam
9) Banh Ep - Flattened rice paper dough with raw egg grilled @ 22:54 - Same location as the Vietnamese rice paper pizza
10) Nem Lui Vietnamese Pork Skewers @ 25:56 - These were found at 241 Huynh Thuc Khang - TP, Hue, Vietnam
11) Banh Xeo Vietnamese pancakes @ 25:56 - Same location as above, 241 Hyun Thuc Khang - TP. Hue, Vietnam

Vlog 13 - Hoi An, Vietnam
we took a 45 minute taxi from Da Nang to Hoi An, settled into our next hotel before hiring push bikes to go and explore parts of the Ancient Town. After nearly a week in Hoi An, here is what we got up to!
Things to do Hoi An, Vietnam
1. Ancient Town, Hoi An
Of course if you are going to be spending time in Hoi An, you are bound to visit the Ancient Town. By day it has bustling markets, lots of coffee shops and is an ideal location to cycle the streets whilst doing a bit of shopping... they have custom made tailors / shops all over should you need any travel clothes!
By night, the place completely transforms... the lanterns come alive, lights everywhere, even on the water where locals light candle lanterns which you can buy and release along the river. You will not be short of food options in the Ancient Town either. It was incredibly busy around the time we were visiting, just after Vietnamese new year, but don't expect Hoi An to be quiet any time of the year. The Ancient Town has a real charm to it, embrace it's culture and you will enjoy your time here.
2. Basket Boat Tour, Coconut Forest
This was by far our FAVOURITE experience whilst in Hoi An, Vietnam. The ladies rowing the boats were so nice, and floating among the coconut forest is a real treat. Our guide took out a fishing rod and managed to catch a crab... only to lose it in the boat haha, we panicked!
The Chinese / Korean tourists took to basket boats nearby, and their guides decided to play all kinds of 'banging' tunes to get them fired up... with the guides dancing, doing stunts on their basket boats. Interesting to see!
3. Marble Mountain
OK Marble Mountain is actually a little closer to Da Nang than it is Hoi An... but we ran out of time in Da Nang so had to head back that way to visit the famous location. Worth it! The caves, the views, the statues, everything about this place is impressive...
The only difficult bit is all the steps up to the top haha! We managed to fly the drone out from Marble Mountain too, hope you like our footage.
One thing, expect A LOT of people visiting here. If possible, arrive early morning to avoid the mass crowds. You'll never find yourself alone in any of the caves though, easily one of the most popular tourist destinations around Da Nang & Hoi An.
4. Cua Dai Beach, Hoi An
Not the nicest beach on the coast of Vietnam, but worth seeing. It's a real shame to see what natural erosion has done to the beach, with most of it's sand swept away a few years back... I think that's what makes this beach unique, looking at old google pictures, the beach looks so different nowadays. Inspiring to see the efforts the Vietnamese are going to in order to keep parts of the beach intact vs the tide.
5. Jack's Cat Cafe
Are you a cat lover? Then you will LOVE this little cat cafe located just out of town. It's location isn't an easy find, even with google maps... largely because the owners don't want to draw attention from locals who might want to break in and steal the cats for their 'meat trade.'
The volunteers are doing a great job at the cafe, caring for more than 70 rescue cats. They all have unique personalities, especially the kittens we met on the day :) Expect most of the cats to be lazing around, it's hot in Hoi An and long days being kept safe in the cafe grounds must make these little guys a bit tired, day in day out.
Oh and take a look in the pond... you'll see a HUGE fish in there!
Bigger than the cats haha!
That summarises our time in Hoi An, Vietnam.
We had a great few days here, ate lots of tasty local food and experienced some of the best travel hotspots the area has to offer.
Next stop for us is Nha Trang. We will be catch a train from Da Nang all the way to Nha Trang. 10+ hours of fun... not! Only in Vietnam :)
