-- About this video --
Today, the original plan is to check out the West Coast Treetop Walkway but when we get there we find it almost impossible to safely film with our cameras under the huge amount of rain! We need to find an alternative activity. What to do in Hokitika on a rainy day?
We head back to Hokitika town and remember a place in town called the Hokitika Glass Studio where you can watch people glass blowing. It’s such an unusual and skilful craft that we figure that would be fun to check out!
We go to the Hokitika Glass Studio and meet the team of the family business, Anthony and Barry, who invite us to try some glass blowing for ourselves, as well as watch them do some glass blowing demonstrations. We never thought we would be doing glass blowing in New Zealand but here we are attempting to do some glass art in Hokitika.
We learn a lot about the fascinating craft of New Zealand glass art and even get ourselves some glass souvenirs to remember our time here at Hokitika Glass Studio. It was our saviour for Day 115 of our New Zealand travel vlog where we need to do 365 activities in 365 days in New Zealand! Checking out the Hokitika Glass Studio is a pretty cool activity for a rainy day in Hokitika.
So what do you think of the Hokitika Glass Studio? Would you choose to do this rainy day activity in Hokitika?

-- About this video --
Today we are exploring the New Zealand West Coast town of Hokitika! Hokitika is famous for being the Jade Country or having a lot of greenstone or pounamu so our mission today is to get some greenstone pendant inspiration so that we can carve our own greenstone for each other in a couple of days time.
We check out some Hokitika jade stores and Hokitika greenstone stores to find out about the greenstone meanings and see some greenstone carvers at work. Oh yeah, and we also check out Sock World in Hokitika too, which is a Hokitika sock museum.
Once inspired, we head down to Hokitkia Beach where we spend time designing our greenstone pendants for each other until the sun starts to set. Now we get to see that famous Hokitika sunset! This is one of the best places to see the New Zealand sunset!
After a relaxed but cool day in Hokitika, we head back to our hostel, the Mountain Jade Backpackers.
So what do you think of the West Coast town of Hokitika? Would you stop here while travelling the New Zealand South Island? Let us know!

23 Unforgettable Walks in Hokitika ➜
Hokitika - Beach, Arts and Crafts - West Coast, New Zealand
Hokitika -
Hokitika is a 'must-stay' destination on the West Coast, South Island, New Zealand.
Think of those fun-filled, relaxed holidays you used to have - then throw in better coffee, a wild beach, awesome sunsets, mountain views, and great cafes and galleries. You’ll find genuine experiences and friendly characters that love to share a story.
There is easy access to untamed natural wilderness too with the famous Hokitika Gorge, two serene lakes, the West Coast Wilderness Trail and a range of nature walks nearby. The Glaciers and Pancake Rocks are just day trips away.
Don’t rush! It’s common to hear “I wish we had stayed in Hokitika longer. There is so much to see and do.” So stay awhile to enjoy the slower pace of life, have a chat and soak in the view with us.
BEACH TOWN
Even the most amateur of photographers can get that perfect shot if they head to the ocean, just a few minutes walk from town. By day you can see New Zealand’s highest mountain, the magnificent Aoraki / Mt Cook from the beach. As evening comes, head to Sunset Point to see the fiery orange sun sinking into the Tasman Sea.
If you visit in summer you are likely to come across incredible driftwood sculptures, built as part of the annual Driftwood & Sand Beach Sculpture Festival. The works of art are left standing for visitors to enjoy until the sea slowly reclaims them. And no trip to Hokitika is complete without a picture of the iconic beachside, driftwood Hokitika sign.
During whitebaiting season from September to November, watch the locals fish with nets for the tiny delicacy at the nearby river mouth. Or try your hand fishing for kahawai or sea run trout.
Whatever the time of year, enjoy the view over a drink or take a walk along the beach, perhaps stumbling upon a seal basking in the sun. Children will love scouring the beach for pieces of pounamu (NZ Jade) that have been washed down from a nearby river.
ARTISAN COMMUNITY
Hokitika and its surrounding areas, especially the Arahura River, is a major source of pounamu. Also known as greenstone or jade, pounamu was prized by Maori as a great taonga or treasure, and used to make weapons, tools and jewellery.
These days you can watch world-renowned carvers at work in their studios and chat to them about the stone and their designs. For the more adventurous you can even carve a piece yourself.
The carvers are part of a large artisan community which includes photographers, painters,, glass blowers, sculptors, wood turners, jewellers, craftspeople, potters, and metal, stone and textile artists. They are happy for you to visit their studios.
RICH CULTURE
At the height of the gold rushes in the 1860’s Hokitika was a bustling town that welcomed 37,000 immigrants through its port in just two years. Today the town embraces its history and a visit to the excellent Carnegie Building for stories of the gold rushes, pounamu, pioneering life and whitebait is a must.
A self-guided Points of Interest Loop is also an option, along the way view images of yesteryear on your mobile phone using augmented reality. The 11km ramble around town is one of many easy walks, as night falls make sure you head to the glowworm dell – a magical spot for both children and adults.
DINING OPTIONS
Whether you enjoy fish and chips at the beach, or head to one of the many cafes, pubs or restaurants there are plenty of culinary options. In whitebait season you can try whitebait fritters or even a whitebait pizza. Finish your night with a drink at the wine bar or one of the many pubs where you are bound to meet a Coaster who is happy to yarn the evening away.

-- About this video --
After waking up in the Mountain Jade Backpackers in Hokitika, we are taking the 20-minute drive to Hokitika Gorge to do the Hokitika Gorge Walk.
When we arrive at the car park for Hokitika Gorge, there are heaps of information signs telling us about the walk and surrounding flora and fauna. Then we head on our way down to the gorge.
On the way down on the Hokitika Gorge Walk, we get glimpses of the gorge and it’s famous swing bridge on the way. We see the milky blue waters of the Hokitika Gorge among grey rock sides and lush green vegetation. Right here is one of the most stunning places in New Zealand.
We make our way down to the Hokitika Gorge Swing Bridge where we get lots of photos then the walk continues down to the river itself. After spending way too much time loving the New Zealand scenery, we head back to that famous Hokitika Gorge swingbridge and back to Hokitika.
So what do you think of Hokitika Gorge? Is it one of the things to do on the South Island you would add to your New Zealand must-do list?

-- About this video --
After a failed attempt to do the West Coast Treetop Walk yesterday in the heavy rain which was damaging our cameras, we are making it back to the West Coast Treetop Walkway to walk through the forest canopy of a classic New Zealand rainforest.
A unique walk in Hokitika and a New Zealand West Coast walk is the treetop walkway. It’s a great place to learn about the native New Zealand forest and get a unique perspective of the place. The Hokitika Treetop Walk is very accessible and is 2.5km long. There’s also a huge tower to climb to get more views over the lakes and out to the Tasman Sea.
We also get the chance to see native New Zealand birds like the fantail and the native wood pigeon called a kereru.
The West Coast Treetop Walkway is located only 10 minutes out of Hokitika along the New Zealand West Coast or South Island West Coast.
So what do you think of the West Coast Treetop Walk? Is it something you are adding to your New Zealand must do list?

Description
A day in Hokitika, New Zealand
Hi travellers,
We're arrived in Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. What is there to see?
In this video we drive through the town and to the beach. We were so lucky with the weather and it was such a lovely day.
Be sure to pack layers, the weather can be different between Christchurch and the coast.
We had a spot of lunch in a cafe on the main street. Oh boy cheese rolls! For a cheaper option, head down to the New World supermarket.
There are many stores to pop into in Hokitika, you could take a day, an afternoon to shop.
