Exploring Hokitika - New Zealand, Episode 5
Landscape photography is all about the conditions. And conditions don't always work in your favor. But when nature gives you lemons, the best thing to do is try and make some lemonade. It's been raining all day in Hokitika but that didn't stop us from exploring the gorge and the coast. It's been a challenging but incredible day and I love how it all played out.

Glass Blowing in Hokitika - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 115: Today our plans change when we have a classic New Zealand West Coast downpour so our salvation is to do some glass blowing in Hokitika at the Hokitika Glass Studio! Join us for today’s fun and unexpected activity as part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand.
Yesterday - Day 114 ➜
Tomorrow – Day 115 ➜
30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today, the original plan is to check out the West Coast Treetop Walkway but when we get there we find it almost impossible to safely film with our cameras under the huge amount of rain! We need to find an alternative activity. What to do in Hokitika on a rainy day?
We head back to Hokitika town and remember a place in town called the Hokitika Glass Studio where you can watch people glass blowing. It’s such an unusual and skilful craft that we figure that would be fun to check out!
We go to the Hokitika Glass Studio and meet the team of the family business, Anthony and Barry, who invite us to try some glass blowing for ourselves, as well as watch them do some glass blowing demonstrations. We never thought we would be doing glass blowing in New Zealand but here we are attempting to do some glass art in Hokitika.
We learn a lot about the fascinating craft of New Zealand glass art and even get ourselves some glass souvenirs to remember our time here at Hokitika Glass Studio. It was our saviour for Day 115 of our New Zealand travel vlog where we need to do 365 activities in 365 days in New Zealand! Checking out the Hokitika Glass Studio is a pretty cool activity for a rainy day in Hokitika.
So what do you think of the Hokitika Glass Studio? Would you choose to do this rainy day activity in Hokitika?

FROM AUCKLAND TO KERIKERI - day 02 - North Island, New Zealand

My Instagram :
So for those who have seen my last video and are back, either it wasn’t that bad (I don’t believe that for a second) or you like to be tortured (naughty you). Well there could be a third option, that you’re interested in seeing how bad these videos can get (the option I would bet on). Nonetheless, welcome back to you and the newcomers!
Today we pickup our camper-van and make our way north to Kerikeri near the Bay Of Islands. I got up early to head down to Viaduct Basin near Downtown Pier 4 for some photos. It was an overcast morning with some breaks in the clouds on the horizon. I came away with two though. One of The Cloud convention centre and the other of the Sky Tower. Afterwards I went for a walk on Queen’s Wharf around The Cloud before heading back to the room. I was getting hungry and the others would be getting up soon.
Finding a place to eat at 7:30 in the morning on a Sunday was more difficult than we thought. Everything was either closed or opened around 8:30-9 o’clock. Except for The MLC Cafe & Bar, just down the road from us, who open there doors at 7 am. The coffee, food and service was great. I can highly recommend it.
After brekky it was time to pickup our camper-van. We thought it would take about a half hour to have keys in hand but it took a little longer… three hours! Yep, no joke. They apparently had a glitch with their system. We had planned to arrive in Kerikeri around 12:30-1 o’clock but we were just leaving Auckland. No matter, our trip around the North Island of New Zealand had begun. Destination Kerikeri, north of Auckland near the Bay of Islands, with a little stop-over in Kawakawa. A little town at the cross road where you can either head east to Paihia or north-west further up the island. I wanted to visit Kawakawa’s public toilets. Yes, you read me right. But not any toilets, the Hundertwasser public toilets. A beautiful work of art. I’m glad we stopped to check the toilets out because we would never seen the rest of the art works in this little town. Well worth a stop-over.
Moving onward, we’d planned to stop by a couple of wineries, a cheese factory, a chocolate factory and a honey boutique… but it was Sunday. Everything is closed on Sunday. So we kept going to our next stop, The Stone Store where we would also find the Honey House Cafe and the Pear Tree restaurant. All located along the Kerikeri River and all closed apart from the Pear Tree. But it didn’t matter because the area was just beautiful. We spent some time here exploring and taking photos.
It was nearing the end of the day and we wanted to visit the Rainbow Falls before sunset. And beautiful falls they are. I really like one that show the length of the falls. I took one photo from both lookouts and headed back to the camper-van. It was nearing dark and we hadn’t found a spot to stay the night yet. We’d decided to stay at a free campsite tonight and the closes one was in a town called Kaikohe. About a forty minutes drive west of Kerikeri. The campsite was just a parking area suited for long vehicles.
Well, that’s it for day two. Hope to see you for day three. Goodnight.

-- About this video --
Wahoo! We made to day 100 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year! Only 265 days to go! What better way to celebrate than mountain biking in Reefton?
How did we get to mountain biking in Reefton? Well the journey here was thanks to a bunch of friendly locals who are super keen to show us what their small town on the West Coast of the South Island is famous for. We go on a walking tour of Reefton with our hostel host from the Old Breadshop Backpackers, who introduces to a bunch of locals around town.
One thing leads to another and we are having drinks at the Broadway Tearooms having a conversation with a guy who wants to show us one of the mountain biking trails in Reefton. We are in!
Reefton boasts one of the best places for mountain biking in New Zealand with a huge range of trails close to the town. After picking up some bikes from the Reefton Sports Centre, we hit the Lookout Track.
We make our way up this hill at the back of Reefton to a lookout and then do some downhill mountain biking on the Zigzag Track in Reefton.
We downhill mountain bike all the way back to Reefton while crossing the Reefton swing bridge. Once we get back to our hostel, we are invited to go to a quiz night at the local pub.
So what do you think of mountain biking in Reefton? And have you had any friendly New Zealand locals experiences? Let us know in the comments.
