Japan, Hokkaido December 2017 #VLOG
Japan, Hokkaido December 2017 #VLOG
We went from Singapore to Tokyo, Tokyo to New Chitose, New Chitose to Hakodate airport. Stayed 5 nights Hakodate and 7 in Sapporo.
Hakodate
Built on a narrow strip of land between Hakodate Harbour to the west and the Tsugaru Strait to the east, Hakodate (函館) is the southern gateway to the island of Hokkaidō. Under the Kanagawa Treaty of 1854, the city was one of the first ports to open up to international trade, and as such hosted a small foreign community. That influence can still be seen in the Motomachi district, a steep hillside that's sprinkled with European buildings and churches; the waterfront lined with red-brick warehouses; and in the nostalgic streetcar that still makes the rounds of the city.
Sapporo
Japan's fifth-largest city, and the prefectural capital of Hokkaidō, Sapporo (札幌) is a dynamic urban centre that offers everything you'd want from a Japanese city: a thriving food scene, stylish cafes, neon-lit nightlife, shopping galore – and then some. While many travellers see the city as a transit hub from which to access Hokkaidō's mountains and hot springs, there are enough worthwhile attractions to keep you here for days. Summer is the season for beer and food festivals. In February, despite the bitter cold, Sapporo's population literally doubles during the famous Snow Festival.
Japan Trip 2019: Hakodate (4K 60FPS)
Chapter 7: Hakodate
We've finally arrived in Hokkaido! It was a beautiful sunny day in Hakodate, and we did a lot of things in just one day! A common theme you'll see when reaching the north of Japan is that the biggest cities are usually close to the sea. The reason is because most of them were involved in large export trade in the past. The harbour of Hakodate was one of the first to be opened to foreign trade after Japan's era of isolation had come to an end. This also means they have many markets!
Speaking of which, the first place we went to was the Hakodate Morning Market. Just like in Aomori, every morning the market is opened to the public with street vendors offering fresh fish, crab, squid and many fruits like melons! I bought some squid jerky fresh from the market, and it definitely tasted a lot better than what you get in convenience stores around Japan!
After taking a nice walk around the market, we went to the famous Red Brick Warehouses, which are buildings from the past trading days now turned into a dining and shopping complex. I might have bought a few souvenirs there, hehe!
As previously mentioned, Hakodate was one of the first harbour to be opened to foreign trade. This caused traders from Russia and many other Western countries to move to Hakodate. The residential area known as Motomachi came to be! Foreign-looking buildings can be found here, like churches of all things! The most beautiful was the Russian Orthodox Church. The skyline from Motomachi was quite special!
Next, we took the tram to get to Fort Goryokaku, the last western style Japanese fortress in the country. It has a special star shape, and as you'll see in the video, I walked around most of it. It was a peaceful walk that leads to the center of the fortress where the rebuilt Former Magistrate Office stands. It was the base of operation for former shogunate officers against the newly formed government at the time, and as you'd expect, just like in Aizu, they tried to fight back! Lots of history here that's for sure. We decided to get a nice view of the whole fortress from Goryokaku Tower. For just a few yen, you can get to the top of the tower and see all its glory. Extra bonus: you also get a magnificent of the city!
Finally, the last stop of the day was a visit to Mount Hakodate via ropeway, oh my! It is a popular attraction because you get to see a night view of the city from the observation platforms. I've arrived just before sunset, and it was very special because while the sky was clear blue on one side, it was orangeish on the other! The view from the top was incredible! I wish I could have stayed very late, but I had a bullet train to catch!
Thanks a lot for watching, this was a very fun video to make and every time I watch it, I wish I could still be there! The next and final destination to my trip is Sapporo, let's go!

Sapporo ・ SIM Card・Bank・ Downtown
Hey everyone! Today we go over, very briefly, some groundwork for living in Sapporo. First and foremost, if you plan to stay longer than the tourist visa permits (3 months), you should go to the closest ward to where you are staying and get the 転入・転居届 ( for reference) filled out and handed into the ward office. Also, while you are at it, you should get the 国民健康保険 which is the health insurance in Japan.
Afterwards, open up a bank account to receive a bank book (my supporter recommended ゆうちょ銀行 - the bank at the post office 〒). **You will need to fill out 3 forms. Fill out as much as you can and leave the ones you don't know as blanks (make sure the information you write down matches your 在留カード). The staff at the bank will help you through the parts you don't know.
Next, use your bank book to apply for the SIM card (I went with UQ mobile. They seem to cater to short stay international individuals) and got the 3 GB High-Speed data option without calling (I believe to get a phone number you have to stay with them for 1+ year).
Again, if you have a supporter it's probably better to ask them to come along to help you with the process!
Afterwards, we explore Hokkaido University, Odori Park, Tanukikoji, Susukino, and finally the top of the Sapporo TV tower!

Japan Trip: So many things to do in Hokkaido 01 Moopon
Japan Trip: So many things to do in Hokkaido 01 Moopon
The northernmost part of Japan, Hokkaido (北海道) is the second largest, least developed of the Japan’s four main islands. Though winter is harsh here, with lots of snowfall, below zero temperature, summer in Hokkaido is quite pleasant as it isn’t as hot and humid in Hokkaido as it is in other parts of Japan.
Hokkaido is attractive to many visitors for many reasons. The ski/snowboard opportunities here are the best within all of Japan. Many foreign visitors come to Hokkaido for the slopes.
Every February, there is the Sapporo Snow Festival featuring ice sculptures. Large in size, the streets of Sapporo of filled with this chilling pieces of art. Though the temperature is very cold, visitors from all over the world gather in Sapporo for this festival. It is very crowded and visitors wishing to attend should make accommodation reservations in advance.
Visitors may also be interested to visit Kushiro-shitsugen National Park, Ramsar Convention registered wetland. Many rare animals and plants reside in the wetlands. There are walkways for visitors to walk through the wetlands as well as observatories to look into vast natural wildness.
Visitors interested in all the natural wonder should visit Fuano and Biei. In addition to the ski opportunities the cities offer in the winter, both places boasts picturesque floral scenery.
Asahiyama Zoo in Ashikawa, is a modern zoo where visitors can view animals in its natural habitat. Not a safari land, the architecture of the zoo is designed keeping the animals in mind. Among the more creative structures are the Polar Bear Aquatic Park, a “walk through” penguin aquarium, an orangutan trapeze and a seal aquarium with a vertical glass tub the seals can swim in .
And the food in Hokkaido….With all the nature, fresh air and delicious air, it is no wonder, the milk produced here is among the best in the country, providing high quality butter, cheese, yogurt and cream. A Hokkaido specialty barbecued mutton known as “Genghis Khan” is quite popular. And Sapporo ramen, with its miso soup, topped with corn, butter, bean sprouts, finely chopped port, is a dish visitors will not want to miss.
