Holgate Glacier, Alaska
August 6, 2015, was a superb day to be out on a Kenai Fjords boat tour with Major Marine. Holgate Glacier was one of many glaciers seen, and the amount and variety of marine wildlife around us was quite incredible.

The next day, I boarded the ship to see the coast of Fjord of the Kenai Peninsula. The Fjord Coast is a coastal terrain in which glaciers are shaved and U-shaped. The ice changes to the shape of the earth, and the power of the glacier seems to be great. People suddenly started gathering on the deck. I saw sharp fins. It is the most powerful killer whale in the sea. The killer whale was not one. They hunt in groups. It was very fortunate to see a group of killer whales right in front of me. After a while the boat arrived at the Hallgate glacier. Melted glaciers are pouring into the sea. Suddenly, the glacier collapsed with a huge roar. I was just staring at the magnificent sight of the first time in my life.

Holgate Glacier Calving (Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska)
Hiking Exit Glacier, Seward, Alaska
We visited Kenai Fjords National Park, in Seward, Alaska, and take a short hike up to the base of Exit Glacier.
20150728: Day 51, The Seward, AK Highway
The 28th of July, 2015 was our 51st day of travel. This video is a travelogue highlighting the features of the Seward Highway, which includes the route designations of AK-1 and AK-9, from Anchorage, AK to Seward AK. Life Magazine in 2012 designated the Seward Highway as one of its most scenic drives in the world!
The highway to Seward from Anchorage, AK can have several designations...as do many of Alaska's roads which seem to have at least three! In this case, the route includes the road designation of AK-9 between the Sterling Highway and Seward, a distance of about 37 miles. AK-9 designation terminates near Tern Lake Junction where it intersects with Alaska Route 1 (AK-1).
The Seward Highway, AK-1, begins in Anchorage intersecting with 5th Avenue. The highway proceeds along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska for about 12 miles, with the Kenai Mountains running along the northern side, eventually entering the Chugach State Park. The road continues through several small villages...Indian, Bird, and finally the Community of Girdwood.
Fifty or so miles south of Anchorage along the Seward Highway is the turnoff intersection to the Portage Glacier Road which leads to the community of Whittier after passing through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (the Whittier Tunnel).
After passing through Summit Lake you'll soon reach Tern Lake Junction where Alaska Route 1 (AK-1) becomes Alaska Route 9 (AK-9), where this designation remains until reaching the highway terminus in Seward, AK, about 300 feet from the Gulf of Alaska.
You'll drive through Moose Pass, by the Kenai Lake, while enjoying the Chugach National Forest once again as you finally reach the unincorporated community of Bear Creek, then pass the Seward Airport, and finally reach the community of Seward, AK.
The road video was captured using a Cobra Dash Cam.
You can view a detailed video of the travel from Anchorage to Portage Glacier Road in our Whittier video also posted on YouTube:

20140603 155608 Holgate Glacier Boat Trip From Seward AK to find Whales Sea Lions Birds and Glacie
Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise - Seward, Alaska
The cruise will travel through the protected waters of Resurrection Bay and continue around Cape Aialik into Aialik Bay to view Holgate Glacier.
A National Park Ranger will be onboard to provide a detailed narrative on the history, ecology, geology, and wildlife in the area. They are always more than happy to answer your questions during the cruise.
While in the protected waters of Aialik Bay we will begin serving our optional all-you-can-eat Alaska salmon and prime rib meal that is freshly prepared onboard. This meal is served buffet style and is consistently rated as the best of any day-cruise company in Southcentral Alaska. While you enjoy our cruising restaurant service you will be able to sit at your reserved seat inside the heated cabin and not miss out on any of the beautiful scenery.
At the end of Aialik Bay is the mighty Holgate Glacier, an actively calving tidewater glacier. We will spend time in front of the glacier to watch for calving, where giant chunks of glacial ice break off and crash into the water.
Depending on the time of year, we will explore the Chiswell Islands (part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge) or Cape Resurrection, home to thousands of nesting seabirds including puffins, kittiwakes, and cormorants. The captain will stop the boat close to the seabird nesting areas, providing great photo opportunities. We will also visit Steller sea lion colonies, where Steller sea lions gather on the rugged, rocky coastline. Sea otters, bald eagles, and mountain goats are also commonly seen along the route.

Kenai Fjords National Park is a United States National Park established in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The park covers an area of 669,984 acres (1,046.85 sq mi; 2,711.33 km2)[1] on the Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska, near the town of Seward. The park contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. The park is named for the numerous fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the ice field. The field is the source of at least 38 glaciers, the largest of which is Bear Glacier. The park lies just to the west of Seward, a popular port for cruise ships. Exit Glacier is reachable by road and is a popular tour destination. The remainder of the park is primarily accessible by boat. The fjords are glacial valleys that have been submerged below sea level by a combination of rising sea levels and land subsidence.
Kenai Fjords National Monument was initially designated by President Jimmy Carter on December 1, 1978, using the Antiquities Act, pending final legislation to resolve the allotment of public lands in Alaska. Establishment as a national park followed the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980. The park protects the icefield, a narrow fringe of forested land between the mountains and the sea, and the deeply indented coastline. The park is home to a variety of terrestrial and marine mammals, including bears, whales, seals and moose,More info
