Hoorn - a journey back to the Dutch seafaring Golden Age - North Holland

In today's vlog, I visit the city center of Hoorn - the city I was born in. I have lunch with my friend, Marlie. We also end up at the little beach of Hoorn, and we end our day in the village Schellinkhout where we visited a stable, a playground with Marlie's son, and ate delicious vegetarian food!

Viking Cruises walking tour of historic windmills at Kinderdijk, Netherlands (1 of 2)
This is part 1 of 2 of a walking tour conducted by Viking Cruises showing the UNESCO world heritage historic windmills at Kinderdijk, the Netherlands. This is apparently the oldest collection of windmills in the Netherlands still in existence and in operation. These windmills date to 1738 and 1740. Amazing. Highly recommend visiting this site. Sorry that there is not more audio--Viking does their tours with Quietvox devices where you hear the guide through an earpiece. Starting at about 30:30, we are at the visitor center where there is a short video explaining the windmills operation and purpose and thereafter at a lecture explaining the maintenance of the windmills. One of the many amazing aspects of this is that families still apparently live in these windmills and have to make sure the sails are down when they leave their homes for whatever reason. It was really amazing to experience this in person--I hope my video gives some sense of what it was like but this is something I highly recommend doing. This was one of the highlights of our Rhine Cruise.

Holland - Best Places To Visit.
In this video we would like to tell you a little about the best places to visit in Holland as well as provide some tips on languages, currency, driving, parking, camping and shopping.
Holland is a really interesting country to visit.
Some of the best places to visit in Holland include Amsterdam, Gouda, Leiden, Maastricht, Groningen, Giethoorn, Katwoude, Hoorn, Alblasserdam and Oirschot.
Holland has a population of around 17 million people but has only a small land mass of 41,526 sq. km a large percentage of which is very flat and below sea level.
The official language is Dutch, however most people speak very good English as it is taught from an early age at school.
The currency is the Euro.
Wild camping is forbidden, however, several motorhome friendly municipalities have regulated facilities where overnight parking is allowed.
Ready-made joints, cannabis related products, rolling papers, pipes and bongs can be ordered legally in coffee shops, however we decided to stay on our natural high of just being with each other.
Bicycles can be seen in their millions and the Netherlands has more than 32,000 km of dedicated bicycle paths.
The Dutch are the most prolific travellers of any country we have encountered whilst travelling – whether it be NordKap in the far north of Norway, Sounion on the southern tip of Greece or anywhere in between we always saw the yellow number plates with NL and knew we would be able to speak to them in English and get a smile and help in return.
There are still at least 30 different languages in the EU and Dutch Frisian and English are the main languages spoken.
Most younger people in larger towns and cities across Europe speak English as their second language, however in the rural areas sometimes not a lot of English is spoken, particularly by older people.
There are around 13 different currencies in the EU however the Euro is the main Dutch currency.
Vignettes are not required for driving on the Holland road networks and there are no toll roads except for a couple of tunnels.
The road systems in Holland are good the only problem being that Holland is a very small country with way too many people and way too many cars so the road networks are always crammed with traffic.
Credit cards are accepted widely in Holland, however, some vendors only accept Visa but not Mastercard, or vice versa.
There are different rules regarding “parking” and “camping” – many countries allow “overnight parking” as long as you don't camp there – the definition of “camping” is if you set up anything outside of your vehicle eg tables and chairs, and or BBQ, and or put up your sun awning and or position your vehicle on levelling ramps etc – then that is classified as camping.

Amsterdam - Part 2 - Holland Holiday

In Part 1 we ended at the lively Museumplein. But Amsterdam has more interesting squares. Like the Leidseplein with the City Theatre and a big cinema. In addition, the Americain Hotel and Cafe where artists and intellectuals come together.
Nearby other attractive places like a casino, the Hard Rock Cafe and poptemple Paradiso.
The Rembrandtsplein, is named after our most famous painter. His statue is in the middle. The statues around him are figures from his most famous painting, the Nachtwacht.
Walk of Rembrandt Square towards the Munttoren. You will come along this famous cinema, Tuschinsky. Completely build in Art Deco style.
When you have reached the Munttoren, shopping street the Kalverstraat is on your right side. Enter the flowermarket on the left side.
An old flea market is at the foot of a characteristic church on the waterlooplein. We’ll come along Amsterdam's town hall. It also houses a theatre.
We are taking a look inside the house where Rembrandt lived and worked.
Another nice square is the Nieuwmarkt. In the middle the monumentual weigh house, surrounded with other historic buildings and cosy terraces.
Alongside Belgium and the Scandinavian countries the Netherlands is the most gay-friendly country in Europe. Every year Amsterdam organizes the Canal Pride. It is a huge celebration of devotion towards equality for the gay, lesbian, and transgender.
Another big party is Kingsday. It is one of the largest open-air festivities in the city. From all over the country people come to Amsterdam for second-hand shopping on the streets. Hundreds of small boats sail along the canals and the beer flows freely.
Amsterdam is also famous for its many coffe shops where you can buy cannabis and marijuana, but beware, there are strict rules. And they change occasionally.

Volendam (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌvoːlənˈdɑm]) is a town in North Holland in the Netherlands, in the municipality of Edam-Volendam. The town has about 22,000 inhabitants (November 2007).
Originally, Volendam was the location of the harbor of the nearby Edam, which was situated at the mouth of the IJ bay. In 1357, the inhabitants of Edam dug a shorter canal to the Zuiderzee with its own separate harbor. This removed the need for the original harbor, which was then dammed and used for land reclamation. Farmers and local fishermen settled there, forming the new community of Vollendam, which literally meant something like 'Filled dam'. In the early part of the 20th century it became something of an artists' retreat, with both Picasso and Renoir spending time here. The majority of the population belongs to the Roman Catholic Church, which is deeply connected to the village culture. Historically, many missionaries and bishops grew up in Volendam. Today there is the chapel of Our Lady of the Water, which is located in a village park.

Hoorn is a town and a former Dutch East India Company base in the Dutch province of North Holland. It lies on the IJsselmeer, a lake north of Amsterdam. Shops and cafes dot its 17th-century town center, which is anchored by the Roode Steen, the main square. The harbor features the Hoofdtoren, a 16th-century tower. Museums include the Westfries Museum, displaying paintings of the Westfrisian Golden Age.

Op 26 maart 1356/1357[3] verleende Willem V stadsrechten aan Hoorn, tegen betaling van 1550 schilden (gouden ecu's). Door deze maatregel kon de stad zelf rechtsregels opstellen en handhaven, en belastingen innen. Een neveneffect was dat de ontwikkeling van de stad als handelsnederzetting sterk bevorderd werd. Het oorspronkelijke document bevindt zich heden ten dage (2006) nog in de archieven van de gemeente Hoorn.
Hoorn overvleugelde al snel de andere Zuiderzeehavens. Alleen Amsterdam kende in de 15e eeuw een soortgelijke snelle groei. Belangrijke impulsen voor de stad was de keuze voor Filips van Bourgondië. Het Bourgondische rijk vormde een stimulans voor de handel. In de 15e eeuw ontwikkelde zich een levendige lakenindustrie, waarvan het product zich qua prijs en kwaliteit kon meten met het laken uit Leiden, Den Haag en Haarlem. Tegenspoed, voortkomende uit onder andere de Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten, alsmede de Gelderse Oorlogen rond 1500 brachten deze lakenhandel in de problemen. Bovendien kozen steeds meer Hoornse handelaren er voor te participeren in de Oostzeehandel (graan uit Polen en Litouwen naar Italië brengen).
Op Goede vrijdag van het jaar 1481 vond in Hoorn een grote stadsbrand plaats, waarbij vooral het westelijk deel van de stad werd getroffen.
Hoorn koos in 1572 net als Waterland en de gehele Zaanstreek, voor de reformatie en de Prins van Oranje. Tegen de 'Spanjaarden' is een zware zeeslag geleverd, de Slag op de Zuiderzee. Hoornse schepen werden in dat gevecht geholpen door inwoners uit Hoorn en vrijwilligers vanuit de Zaanstreek, Schermer en Waterland. De bevelhebber van de koninklijke vloot, stadhouder Maximiliaan van Hénin-Liétard (Bossu), werd gevangengenomen. Op de Bossuhuizen aan de Slapershaven is in gevelstenen en schilderingen deze zeeslag fraai weergegeven.
On 26 March 1356/1357 [3] William V, granted city rights to Horn, against payment of 1550 shields (Golden ECUs). By this measure the city could establish and maintain rules of law itself, and collect taxes. A side effect was that the development of the city as a trading settlement was highly promoted. The original document is today (2006) still in the archives of the municipality of Hoorn.
Soon the other Horn were Zuiderzee ports. Amsterdam knew only in the 15th century a similar rapid growth. Important impulses for the city was the choice for Philip of Burgundy. The Burgundian Kingdom was a stimulus to the trade. In the 15th century developed a lively sheet industry, whose product could measure themselves in terms of price and quality with the cloth from Leiden, the Hague and Haarlem. Adversity, arising from, among other things, the hook and cod wars, as well as the Guelderian wars around 1500 brought this cloth trade in the problems. In addition, more and more traders there for Hoornse chose to participate in the Baltic trade (grain from Poland and Lithuania to Italy).
On good Friday of the year 1481 found in Hoorn a large city fire place, especially the western part of the city was afflicted.
Horn chose in 1572 like Waterland and the entire zaanstreek, for the reformation and the Prince of Orange. Against the ' Spaniards ' is a heavy sea battle, the battle on the Zuiderzee. Hoornse ships were in that fight helped by residents from Horn and volunteers from the zaanstreek, Schermer and Waterland. The Commander of the Royal fleet, stadtholder Maximilian of Hénin-Liétard (Balboa), was captured. Bossuhuizen to the sleepers on the port is in facing bricks and paintings this battle beautifully displayed.

Monnickendam (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌmɔnɪkənˈdɑm]) is a Town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Waterland, and lies on the coast of the IJsselmeer, about 8 km (5.0 mi) southeast of Purmerend. It received city rights in 1355 and suffered a lot of damage during the fires of 1500 and 1513.
History
Monnikendam was also the name of a number of warships - mainly built at the port of that name - during the Anglo-Dutch Wars.
The town was founded by monks, the name Monnickendam translates as 'Monk's dam'.
Monnickendam was a separate municipality until 1991, when it was merged into Waterland. Although it is a small fishing village today, it was an important port in earlier centuries. It possesses a seventeenth-century weigh house, once used by merchants and port officials, and a bell tower that dates from 1591. The fourteenth century church of St. Nicholas, renovated in 1602, is particularly notable. The synagogue was built in 1894. Jewish families named Monnikendam trace their roots to this town.
The town was the site of an artist's colony in the early twentieth century.
Demographics
In 2001, the town of Monnickendam had 9,546 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 1.34 km2 (0.52 sq mi), and contained 3,766 residences. The wider statistical area of Monnickendam has a population of around 9,680.

Cornelis Dirkszoon, mayor during the 80-year war.
Hermann Jung (about 1608–1678) famous Lutheran theologian and preacher in Monnickendam. Born probably at Brokreihe(-Nord) near Hodorf (Holstein) around 1608. Friend of Jan Amos Comenius and a correspondent of Philipp Jakob Spener, Hermann Jung developed himself from a preacher of the small Lutheran community in Monnickendam to an important representative of early Lutheran pietism in the Netherlands.
Wendelmoet Claesdochter, first female martyr during the reformation. Condemned to death by fire in 1527 in The Hague.
Simon Lambrechtszoon Mau, captain of the Duyfken, joining the first expedition to the Dutch Indies, using the route Om de Zuid, around Africa.
Marlou van Rhijn, Paralympic 200m sprint world record holder and gold medal winner was born here.
