Terrifying 5ft 'beast' with sharp teeth discovered in British Hollingworth Lake in Rochdale
This terrifying mystery creature found washed up on the banks of a lake could be an unknown, ancient species from the murky depths.
Or, it could just be a pike, depending on who you ask.
The corpse of the creature was discovered at Hollingworth Lake in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, yesterday.
Eyewitnesses spotted the creature at the edge of the water and estimated it was almost 5ft in length.
The huge beast still had a mouth full of teeth which one walker said he could fit his entire fist inside.
The photos, posted by multiple shocked walkers, sparked a debate on whether the creature was an ancient beast or just a dead pike.
The shots have since become a hit online and have been shared more than 200 times in a bid to clear up the mystery.
Sales worker Jonny Beckett, 32, said: I was just on a romantic walk with my partner Suzanne and I was stunned when I saw it.
I thought it was a crocodile or some ancient creature and I immediately took a photo of it.
It looked huge - about 5ft in length.
A group of kids saw me taking the photo and looked horrified.
Myron Szymanskyj, who also shared his photos of the beast, said: I eyeballed the deceased monster.
Anyone know what the thing with substantial teeth is and a mouth wide enough to accommodate a human fist?
I turned it over and boy did it stink.
Pikes are regularly found in the 130-acre reservoir and have been known to grow to more than 4ft.
Some users are adamant that the beast is the corpse of a pike but others are not convinced and have vowed to steer clear of the lake.
Carole Ann Gleeson said: What eva it is a monster or a pike.
It's bloody horrible I won't paddle in the lake again, that's for sure.
Emma Lorraine Mitchell added: Some pike that is. That looks lethal, I wonder if that's the only one or if there are more or if its ancient.
Emma Meredith said: Aww I was going to have a drive up weekend with the kids. I think I'll pass now.

Hollingworth Lake is a 130-acre (53 ha) reservoir at Smithy Bridge, in Littleborough — part of the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, England. The lake was originally built as the main water source for the Rochdale Canal, but developed as a tourist resort from the 1860s, and became known as the Weighver's Seaport. Hotels were built around it, at least two of which had outdoor dancing stages with gas lighting.[citation needed] Tourism was helped by the arrival of the railway in 1839, which brought day-trippers and weekend visitors from Manchester, Bradford and Leeds.
The popularity of the lake as a resort declined in the early twentieth century, and the area was used as an army camp during the First World War. The canal company sold the reservoir, with seven others, to the Oldham and Rochdale Corporations for water supply in 1923, by which time the canal was in terminal decline. After the Second World War, boating rights were bought by Rochdale Council, who developed the area into the Hollingworth Lake Country Park in 1974. There has been a steady increase in facilities since, and it is now a thriving centre for water sports and other activities.
The lake was used for training by Captain Matthew Webb[citation needed], before he became the first man to swim the English Channel in 1875, and was used for the World Professional Mile Championship, a long-distance swimming event, in the 1880s. It is home to the Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club, which has been in continuous existence since 1872.
