HSTs in Derbyshire Sunday 12/05/13
Initially I had gone out for 3 XC Sets however late running and adverse weather conditions cut that down to the 2 however I did catch an EMT set in the mix. Starting off in Milford, Derbyshire we see XC02 with 301/357 power north on 1S41 1103 Birmingham-Glasgow, then coming the other way twenty minutes later was EMT set NL02 with 052/046 as they head to St Pancras on 1C43 the 1015 off Leeds. An hour later and further north at Dunge Wood between Belper and Ambergate we see XC04 with 303/378 coast by with 1S43 1203 Birmingham-Glasgow. By then you can see the weather was declining.

Oakhurst House and Wireworks. Ambergate, Derbyshire. Jan 2018
Finally got to discover these abandoned ruins in the depths of Derbyshire. Along the path from Holly Lane, Ambergate, is a little derelict cottage (not filmed), then onto the Ambergate Bridon Wireworks where this video begins. Amongst the dereliction is plenty of graffiti, look out for the hidden door and the Magic Chicken!
5:48 Just beyond the Wireworks is the notorious ruins of Oakhurst House, which is full of history, mystery and intrigue!
About....
Oakhurst House (Ruins) is a building encased by Shining Cliff Woods in the grounds of Ambergate Wireworks (Bridon's) above the village of Ambergate in Derbyshire. The house was built in 1848 by local landowner Francis Hurt (1801–1854) behind his iron forge in Ambergate. It was owned by the Johnson family of industrialists for many years who were benefactors in the local area.
Francis Hurt, knew that his unmarried daughters, Emma, Elizabeth, Selina and Frances Fanny would have to leave Alderwasley Hall after his death because it would needed by his heir, and next Lord of the Manor. He thought he would provide for them when this happened. In 1848 he had built for them a rather grand house called “Oakhurst”. However, the four ungrateful daughters were having none of it and refused to move there and so a much grander house called Chase Cliffe was constructed near Crich, Derbyshire. It was then decided to lease the forge with the house used as accommodation.
When the Johnson family took over Oakhurst they had alterations made. There is a date stone showing the Johnson logo with a date of 1894. For many years Oakhurst was the home of Thewlis Johnson, the nephew of Johnson & Nephew.
In the 1920s it served as a religious retreat for the local diocese for a brief period.
During 1945, soon after WW2 ended, the house was divided into nine flats and three apartments for managerial staff.
Since the 1970s the house has been left abandoned and has been decaying ever since.
It's claimed that the house haunted, but there is no actual proof of this. Although it makes part of a good a good story to run alongside a house in this derelict state. A nearby pub runs organised ghost walks; you will be told all kinds of nonsense if you're gullible enough to believe it all.
The house is for sale at a mere £850,000 in its current state (Ghosts n Ghouls included!).
The Ambergate Wireworks and Mills were owned and run by Johnson Shorthorn, manufactures of Highly Tempered Steel wires of all kinds. They were taken over by Bridon in 1990 and closed in 1996. Been in a state of abandonment ever since.

Oakhurst House
Oakhurst House is a house located in the Shining Cliff Woods above the village of Ambergate in Derbyshire. It certainly looks the part striking a decidedly haunting pose from out of the woods it would make the perfect setting for a horror movie.
The house was built in 1848 by wealthy industrialist Francis Hurt behind his wirework business in Ambergate which is now also neglected and derelict and is an eerily spooky site at night. The wireworks were used to manufacture the telegraph wires used underneath the English channel in WWII.
Further into the woods is a 2000 year old tree known as the Betty Kenny tree. This tree is named after a family Charcol Burners called Luke and Betty Kenny who had eight children and apparently used the tree as a cradle. Unfortunately, one of which died and is allegedly buried within the wood. The tree is said to be the origin of the lullaby Rock a Bye Baby.
It is also alleged that there are sites within the Shining Cliff Woods where pagan and satanic rituals were held over many hundreds if not thousands of years
