Inspectors looking into safety at Hollywood Casino after worker death
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (WKRC) - OSHA Inspectors are trying to determine how a veteran casino worker in Lawrenceburg died on the job.
Fifty-five-year-old Wesley Stokes died last Saturday while operating an electric lift on the Hollywood Casino property.
Stokes was a facilities manager at Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg for 23 years.
On Saturday afternoon, he was driving an electric boom lift when something happened.
He was found by his employees pinned between the bucket of the lift and a concrete ceiling.
Medics tried to revive Stokes but were unsuccessful.
Dearborn County coroner Steve Callahan was then called.
It's not yet clear if it was a workplace accident or if Stokes suffered a medical emergency. Either way, Callahan said his hand was still on the lever that pushes the bucket upward.
Indiana's Department of Labor is looking into what happened.
An inspector is gathering information to see if Hollywood Casino is in compliance with safety regulations.
If violations are found, there could be a penalty.
Sports wagering in Indiana goes live this Sunday
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (WKRC) - For the first time in modern history, you will be able to legally bet on sports in the Tri-State this weekend. Indiana approved sports betting back in May. Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg will be the area's first sportsbook.
I come up and want to make a bet on Major League Baseball for today,” Hollywood Casino’s Hugh Aufill is showing Local 12 the ropes. “So, we're going to play a two-team parlay. We're going to play the Reds parlayed to the Indians for $20.
Aufill will run Hollywood Casino's sportsbook when the switch is flipped this Sunday along with books at three other casinos in Indiana.
I already have the bug: Can we bet on the Bengals?
Absolutely,” Aufill said. “We can bet on the Bengals' first game of the regular season, sure. So for that same $20, they are plus $3.20, so your odds have almost gone up to 13-and-a-half to one for your $20, and once you cash the ticket, you're winning $288.
But let's face it: The casino and the state are not counting on me winning. A state-sponsored study estimates people will bet $56 million in Indiana in the first year -- $256 million in the fifth year. Along with indirect spending, like at hotels and restaurants, the total impact by year five will be nearly $500 million. That translates to $10 million to Indiana's general fund in year one -- $38 million by year five. Who will be betting? Fifty-seven percent will be men. Sixty percent will be married or with a partner. Three-quarters will have at least some college. And 61 percent will have a household income of more than $50,000 -- people like Joe Herzog from Dayton.
I like to bet on football and NCAA basketball,” said Herzog.
How about darts and cricket? we asked.
I don't have the knowledge for that game, he replied.
And Sharon Alverson from Greensburg, Indiana.
I like football; I like basketball; I like NASCAR, said Alverson, as a pizza arrives at her table.
You like pizza. I bet you'll eat two pieces, I said.
Yes! she answered.
I already won my first bet. The real money, by the way, comes with legal mobile sportsbooks. They are expected to make twice as much as the brick-and-mortar casinos in sports betting. Indiana also OK'd those, which are expected to go online later this fall. You will still have to be in Indiana to use the apps, though. And for all of you who are currently using offshore, online, sportsbooks -- you technically are breaking the law in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.
Rising Star Casino expects to open its sportsbook later this fall. Kentucky and Ohio both have sportsbook legislation in motion.
Southeast Indiana casinos left out of gaming expansion bill
RISING SUN, Ind. (WKRC) - Gaming communities in Indiana are about to take a big hit. State lawmakers are leaving them out of a gaming expansion bill.
The new law expands sports betting, but it takes away from the amount of cash that casinos pump into the community. In Rising Sun, the mayor expects to lose $633,000 per year. Brent Bascom says city leaders will have to take a hard look at their budget.
It's a shocking number. There's no question about it,” said Bascom. We were holding up our end of the bargain. Why can't we just have a voice at the table?
Now, law enforcement, the parks department and road infrastructure could all take a big hit in Rising Sun.
“There's a lot of different things where that money helps us, so we have to prepare for the new reality of what life in Rising Sun is going to be like,” said Bascom.
Up the road in Lawrenceburg, home to Hollywood Casino, Mayor Kelly Mollaun is a bit more optimistic.
“We think it will be minimal. That's what we always expect. Every two years, we're fighting for our gaming dollars,” said Mollaun.
Mollaun estimates Lawrenceburg will lose south of $500,000 a year. While it's still a lot of money, Mollaun is banking on Hollywood Casino drawing bigger crowds than smaller casinos like Rising Star; that could bring in more money.
What we would do is we would have to budget accordingly. You can't budget what you don't have,” said Mollaun.
While both mayors will find different ways to deal with cuts, both are wondering why lawmakers forgot about their communities.
“I think we should be treated just like everybody else,” said Mollaun.
All four legislators who represent southeast Indiana voted against the bill.
LAWRENCEBURG GAMBLING GRANTS PART I
In the past decade, Lawrenceburg, Indiana's taken and given away more than $100 million from the Hollywood Casino. The giveaways were grants, paid for by taxpayer gambling taxes and aimed to spur economic development across southeastern Indiana.
The FBI, IRS and state investigators subpoenaed dozens of grant records in 2012. That investigation continues today.
Now, the grant program is nearly dried up as gambling taxes have nearly dried up. We take a look at where this money went and who got paid. Plus, we take a look at some of the projects that took with them millions of tax dollars--dollars that are lost forever.

State law keeps from hitting jackpot
Laws regulating gaming in the state of Ohio have Fred Franklin of Rec Room Specialties concerned, so much so he fears he could have to close up shop.
Franklin, though, is holding out hope it won't come to that, but with four casinos soon to be operational in Ohio - the first in Toledo by early 2012, the new rules surrounding what can and can't be done in the state could keep him from hitting the jackpot.
