Sacramento Old City Cemetery - Part 1 Pioneers Of Our Past
Sacramento Old City Cemetery was established in 1849 by John Sutter captain of Sutter's Fort who founded the city and donated 10 acres of land to be used for public burial. Sadly a short time later a major Cholera epidemic outbreak occurred killing about a 1000 emigrants who came to Sacramento as a stage stop before heading up to the sierras in search of gold. During the 1850's many pioneers buried here were victims of fires, flooding and disease, As the years passed the cemetery expanded to over 60 acres containing some of the most beautiful monuments and graves in the state of California as it was Victorian by design. At one time this cemetery had a bell tower and a gate house even. Margaret Crocker in 1880 donated 23 acres of the cemetery who owned an observatory that overlooked this historic graveyard. In the 1800's many victims of the Cholera epidemic were buried in mass graves along with 3000 pioneers, various fraternal groups, mayors, governors and other politicians were served the state of California. Old City Cemetery is divided up into nine smaller cemeteries which includes veterans of the Civil War in the Grand Army Of The Republic, Masons, Spanish American War Soldiers, Pioneers and Fireman who started the first hook and ladder company in the state of California just to name a few. At one time the region was prone to severe flooding so many pioneers camped up the cemeteries hill to escape the rising waters in the 1860's. After the turn of the century the city began to neglect this cemetery many of the graves were exhumed to make room for the growing city streets and other structures. The cemetery for many years was forgotten, desecrated and vandalized. Names such as E.B. Crocker, William Stephen Hamilton, General George Wright, John Sutter, Members of the Donner Party, Mark Hopkins and many more notables were interred here which later led to graveyards historic status in the 1950's. Today the cemetery is not only a designated historical landmark but also a haunted one. Stories about a phantom dog, couple wearing all black, firefighter who greets cemetery visitors, heroic train engineer who saved his passenger and even a little girl who died of Encephalitis are said to haunt this cemeteries graves. We invite you to take a tour of one of the most beautiful pioneer cemeteries on the west coast which is full of nature, flowers, history, lore and beautiful craftsmanship of various monuments of the dearly departed.

USA: CALIFORNIA: FRANK SINATRA BURIED IN PALM SPRINGS (2)
English/Nat
One of entertainment's greatest sons, Frank Sinatra, has arrived at his final resting place at a Palm Springs cemetery on Wednesday.
About 4 (h) hundred close family, friends and former colleagues had earlier joined in a moving private funeral service which celebrated his life of show business.
Sinatra died last Thursday of heart failure aged 82.
Hollywood's brightest stars, including many of the old guard, joined 4 (h) hundred family and friends to bid farewell to the king of show business.
They packed the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Beverly Hills to remember and celebrate the life of Frank Sinatra.
Many were overcome with grief.
They watched in silence as Sinatra's elaborate casket blanketed with gardenias, his favourite flowers, was carried out of the church.
Earlier, during the touching two hour service, Sinatra was remembered as a 'reckless, rogue, sentimental fella,' who graced the world with his talent.
Some of the guests wept as they listened to a recording of Sinatra's 'Put Your Dreams Away'.
After the ceremony, Sinatra's casket was carried out of the church to a hearse, amid the din of four media helicopters hovering overhead.
Outside the church thousands of fans lined the streets to get a glimpse of Sinatra's casket.
One fan said she felt at peace knowing that Sinatra lives on through his music and in their memories.

But inside my heart I felt happy because he will always live on in my heart.

Frank Sinatra was revered as being one of a kind, a unique and popular entertainer.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
He was a great one of kind type of entertainer, that you probably won't see again, certainly won't see again in the twentieth century.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop, Sinatra fan
Immediately after the funeral service, Sinatra's widow, Barbara, his three children and other family members accompanied Sinatra's casket to his final resting place.
With the news helicopters following, the hearse drove to Vans Nuys airport, where the casket was loaded on to a private jet that flew with the immediate family to the desert town of Palm Springs some 110 miles east.
In a small, private burial service he was laid to rest at a family plot in the Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City.
He was buried alongside his mother, Natalie Dolly Sinatra, and father, Anthony Martin Sinatra.
Sinatra died of heart failure last Thursday ending a 60-year career on the stage and screen.
He was 82.

USA: FRANK SINATRA TO BE BURIED IN PALM SPRINGS
English/Nat
Frank Sinatra may have been born in New Jersey but he will be laid to rest on the other side of the United States - in Palm Springs, California.
He spent much of his later years in the hot desert resort town, and most residents seem sad that their Mr. Palm Springs is no longer with them.
Admirers are showing their affection for the man with wreaths, bouquets and vases of flowers placed alongside his star on Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
Hoboken, New Jersey may be his birthplace but for the residents of Palm Springs, California, Frank Sinatra was their favourite son.
The hot desert resort town was a frequent haunt of The Chairman of the Board.
Residents have marked his passing by showering his star on the Palm Springs Walk-of-Stars with bouquets, wreaths and momentos including an empty martini glass and burning candles.
Residents and tourists alike are bracing for the media onslaught that is sure to accompany his burial.
Reports already indicate a fierce battle is underway among family members and Barbara Sinatra over the estimated two hundred (m) million U-S dollar Sinatra estate.
The late entertainer's business empire comprises music publishing, a beer wholesaler, expensive real estate holdings and a mint of recording royalties.
As tourists and residents stop and admire the impromptu sidewalk shrine, people are reflecting on what Sinatra's passing means.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It makes me very sad every time I hear his music I want to cry. He's a real legend.
SUPERCAPTION: Betty Hornick, Barbara Sinatra acquaintance
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I'm sad I think it's a loss. Just like when we lose any entertainer we get a pleasure out of watching or listening to, the John Wayne's, the Jimmy Stewart's, the Lee Marvin's, the Broderick Crawford's, they're all gone. We haven't really had that type of actor or singers to replace them nowadays.
SUPERCAPTION: Steve Kiefer, Palm Springs shop owner
But some Palm Spring's residents don't share the adulation.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Frank Sinatra was a punk. He did a lot of things that weren't nice. Including years ago there was a bar here called the Dollhouse, and if they didn't have his record on the jukebox, he'd trash the place. He went nuts. So, he did a lot of things that weren't cool.
SUPERCAPTION: Allen Panick, Palm Springs resident
Like anyone, Sinatra's death is felt worst by friends and Palm Springs folk who came to know him personally.
At Sorrentino's, an Italian restaurant frequented by Sinatra over the years, they are planning to place a plaque on the bar in front of the stool he usually used.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
So I can remember when newlyweds were in here one day and they got all excited when they saw him, he just went and gave them a hundred dollar bill and said, 'Have a nice honeymoon.' I think the myth of him being a scary guy was just a myth.
SUPERCAPTION: Bill Sorrentino, Restaurateur
One large beneficiary of the Sinatra estate could be a cause near to Barbara's heart.
The Barbara Sinatra Children's Center in Rancho Mirage, which aids abused children, is reportedly in line to receive between 70 and 150 (m) million U-S dollars.
And not far away, Old Blue Eyes will be laid to rest in the family plot in this serene and simple cemetery.
The family says Sinatra will be escorted to his grave by a military honour guard because he received both the Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal.
A private vigil for Sinatra will be held on Tuesday night at a church in Beverly Hills.
Sinatra's private funeral mass is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

CEMETERY STROLL! St. John's Church (Virginia)
Time for another cemetery tour! There's like 15 of them and I want to try and hit them all and share them with you guys! This is the oldest church in Richmond and therefore, the oldest cemetery. It's located in the Church Hill neighborhood, which is one neighborhood over from where I live. I live at the bottom of the hill.
The yard surrounding St. John’s church became Richmond’s first official burial ground when the church was constructed here in 1741. Richmond’s founder, William Byrd II, had donated the two highest lots in the city for its location on top of what is now Church Hill. As a part of the colony’s Anglican establishment, St. John’s was initially known as the Henrico parish church or the church on Richmond Hill, until renamed in the early nineteenth century.
Some members were buried underneath the church itself, while others found desirable spots close to the church walls. The earliest surviving marker in the yard dates from 1751. After Richmond became the state capitol in 1780, the yard began to fill at a quicker pace, and some white residents chose to be buried in family graveyards nearby. But St. John’s remained the burial ground of note, especially after the yard’s expansion in 1799, when the city consolidated this block by adding the lots fronting Broad Street and enclosed the whole with a brick wall. In the mid-nineteenth century, after over a thousand interments, burials at the full grounds slowed to nearly a stop.
The congregation remains an active Episcopal church today. Also, the church and grounds serve as an important tourist destination in Richmond, as the site of Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty, or give me death” speech in 1775 to the Second Virginia Convention, which was then debating whether the colony should join in the coming Revolutionary War. The Historic St. John’s Church Foundation helps preserve the site and runs its tours.

USA: BEVERLY HILLS: MOURNERS BID FAREWELL TO FRANK SINATRA (2)
Natural Sound
Frank Sinatra is making the journey to his final resting place.
Family members will lay him to rest in a private burial service at a Palm Springs cemetery on Wednesday.
Earlier hundreds of friends attended a private mass for the star at a church in Beverly Hills.

Big name Hollywood stars, many former colleagues of Sinatra, were among the 400 family and friends who packed the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic church in Hollywood.
The service lasted about two hours.
Mourners filed out of the church, many still overcome with grief as they comforted each other.
They then watched in silence as the elaborate casket carrying the body of Frank Sinatra and blanketed in red and white gardenias was carried out.
Sinatra's widow, Barbara, his three children and other family members are now accompanying his casket to the Palm Springs area.
The interment site at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City is where his mother, Natalie Dolly Sinatra, and father, Anthony Martin Sinatra, are buried.

091416 I45 UPS FATAL CRASH
Just after 230am Wednesday an 18-wheeler car hauler was southbound on i-45 north of Huntsville near FM 1696. That’s when his truck shook violently. As the driver pulled to the shoulder and got out he realized he had an 80,000 pound UPS truck attached to his trailer. Almost all of the vehicles on the car hauler were pushed forward and some were crushed. Walker County EMS responded to the scene and the 58-year-old driver of the UPS truck, who was from Keller, Texas was pronounced dead at the scene. I-45 was closed until just after 7am as the road was cleared and DPS investigated the crash. At this time ,DPS does not know why the UPS truck ran into the other truck but hope the Black Box onboard will yield some answers. As the scene was being investigated, a driver approaching the scene had a medical emergency and slammed into a Huntsville Police car. There were no injuries.
