CARAVAN TRIP 2007 Broome is a pearling and tourist town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, 2200 km north of Perth. The year round population is approximately 14,000, growing to around 30,000 during the tourist season.[citation needed] Broome International Airport provides transport to several regional and domestic towns and cities. History The first European to visit Broome was William Dampier in 1688 and again in 1699. Many of the coastal features of the area are named by him. In 1879, Charles Harper suggested that the pearling industry could be served by a port closer to the pearling grounds and that Roebuck Bay would be suitable. In 1883, John Forrest selected the site for the town, and it was named after the Governor of Western Australia, Sir Frederick Broome. In 1889, a telegraph undersea cable was laid from Broome to Singapore, connecting to England. Hence the name Cable Beach given to the landfall site. Location of BroomeThe town has an interesting history based around the exploits of the men and women who developed the pearling industry, starting with the harvesting of oysters for mother of pearl in the 1880s to the current major cultured pearl farming enterprises. The riches from the pearl beds did not come cheap, and the town's Japanese cemetery is the resting place of more than 900 Japanese divers who lost their lives working in the industry. Many were lost at sea and the exact number of deaths is unknown. The Japanese were only one of the major ethnic groups who flocked to Broome to work on the luggers or the shore based activities supporting the harvesting of oysters from the waters around Broome. They were specialist divers and, despite political pressure to expel them in support of the White Australia Policy, became an indispensable part of the industry until World War II. Broome was attacked by Japanese aircraft on March 3, 1942. The air raid killed at least 88 people. Following the end of the war in 1945, the town and its pearling industry gradually recovered from the disruptions of wartime. The West Australian mining boom of the 1960s, as well as the growth of the tourism industry, also helped Broome develop and diversify. Broome is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia

Overview
Holmes Jungle Nature Park protects one of the few remaining areas of monsoon forest in the Darwin area.
Large numbers of birds, mammals and reptiles breed and seek refuge in the monsoon forest, with the dense vegetation offering protection from the heat and predators.
This Park covers 250 hectares, with Palm Creek winding through it's centre.
How to Get There
Turn north off Vanderlin Drive to the Shoal Bay Recycling Centre.
Then enter the Park through the second gate on your right. Signs show the way.
When to Visit
A pleasant place for walks and picnics any time of the year.
However, the Park is closed to vehicles between 7 pm and 7 am and some roads are closed to vehicles during the wet season (October - April).
What to See and Do
Lookout
From the main picnic area there are panoramic views of the wetlands to the north, monsoon forest to the east and undulating ridges and savannah woodlands to the south. The lower picnic area provides easy access to Palm Creek.

Holmes Jungle is a bush retreat right next to the Local Suburbs of Darwin. We visit the Hilltop Picnic Area that has a very large grass and shaded areas with lots of Benches without shade available as well.

HISTORY CARAVAN TRIP 2007 Fannie Bay is a middle/inner suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Situated in the suburb is the Fannie Bay Gaol museum, Fannie Bay Race Track and a monument to Ross Smith, captain of the Vickers Vimy that, in December 1919, was the first aircraft to fly from England to Australia in less than 30 days. Adjoining the suburb is the East Point Reserve, containing Lake Alexander, a Military Museum and gun emplacements from the Second World War. Fannie Bay is thought to be named after Fanny Carandini, a popular opera singer in the late 1800s. Fannie Bay / East Point is an established residential area, with a beach and large recreation reserve. Fannie Bay / East Point is bounded by the Timor Sea foreshore in the north, Douglas, Macdonald and Charlotte Streets in the east, Conacher Street in the south and the Fannie Bay foreshore in the west. Development of the area dates originally from the late 1800s, but primarily from the 1960s. The Fannie Bay Gaol was in use from 1883 to 1979. During World War II the area was used for gun turrets and as an anchor for the submarine net. In the immediate postwar years the current recreation reserve was used as a golf course. Major features of the area include Fannie Bay Racecourse, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lake Alexander, Vestys Lake and East Point Recreation Reserve. Fannie Bay / East Point has experienced a decrease in population between 1996 and 2001, the result of relative stability in the number of dwellings and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

It's raining, it's pouring
This is what my backyard in Darwin looked like this morning. It had been raining pretty much continuously for over 24 hours at that point. The rain wasn't hard, but it just kept coming. As you can see, the wind was picking up too.
Oh, and that's a noisy frog you can hear along with the rain :) I took a video of him too, which I'll upload shortly.
Edited to add: This rain was actually part of the tropical low that became Cyclone Carlos. We got 650mm of rain in three days!
