AMERICA'S COLORFUL CARIBBEAN ISLAND | San Juan, Puerto Rico
Subscribe to our channel Uprooted to keep up with our weekly world travel vlogs!
Hola from SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO!! ????????
We started off our time on the island visiting and learning with locals about their homelands as we headed toward Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery. A cemetery isn’t usually a must-see attraction when visiting somewhere, with the exception of San Juan. Built in front of the Atlantic Ocean stands the burial grounds of important Puerto Rican’s and individuals. We took the time to really soak in the beautiful scene of the historic oceanfront from the grounds above. The view to the west is the fort of Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro), and to the east is La Perla. We set off again to explore and learn more of San Juan! We pass by many beautifully sculpted historical buildings. The Old San Juan Casino was one of the many. When you picture a casino you think of gambling activities, loud noises, and flashy lights. Yet this casino is rather opposite of what you have in mind. It was used more as a large gathering place for high society. It is a beautiful and elegant venue for events and celebrations. The next building was once the YMCA building and nowadays it’s known as Casa Olímpica. Keep in mind that Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory controlled by the US. The next building was Biblioteca Carnegie. This pink building was one of the institutional structures built by the United States government as part of its education program on the island. The next building is Casa de España. The building consist on a beautiful ballroom on the second floor and the first floor was once a spanish restaurant. We then take a moment to reflect upon a time in history that we should never forget. “In the Shadow of Their Absence” is a Holocaust Memorial dedicated to the Puerto Rican’s that lost their life during a terrorist attack. Colon Plaza (Columbus Plaza) is located at the entrance to Old San Juan greeted by the Christopher Columbus statue and surrounded by craft tents set up by locals selling handcrafted gifts. The plaza is also surrounded by restaurants and cafes. Food? That was a must on our list. A local pointed us to the nearby Old San Juan Food Court. We were greeted by friendly faces and the smell of delicious freshly cooked food. El Sazón de Abuela or Grandma’s Kitchen is rated 5 stars for a reason! After refueling we hit the streets again. This time we strolled downtown not only running into more friendly locals but friendly pigeons as well, haha! Continuing on to the heart of Old San Juan where Calle Fortaleza is located. This beautiful street is located in the heart of old San Juan. The street has beautiful colorful buildings towering on each side. This is where the governor of Puerto Rico and his family live. Many businesses have not re-opened following Maria & some are open with no electricity. Our hearts go out to the hurricane victims and the families that are working hard to rebuild their community day by day. Another place we recommend to visit?- without a doubt! Go and immerse yourself in the mixture of the Spanish & Caribbean culture and we assure you will not be disappointed!
Side note!: A must when visiting Puerto Rico is a kayak adventure through the bioluminescent bay- Puerto Mosquito (Mosquito Bay). These waters consist of organisms named Pyrodinium bahamense, Dinoflagellates (dinos). When they come in contact with another organism or shaken they produce a burst of blue light. It’s truly a natural phenomenon you have to experience! Sadly the bioluminescence burst were unable to capture on camera as our tour guide said it would be pointless to try to capture on GoPro.
Like what you see? Be sure the hit that thumbs up button and show us some love! ????????❤️

Santo Domingo
This is Spanish Plaza in the old city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The DR is where Christopher Columbus of Genoa, Italia first landed using Spanish money to fund his trip. Clearly a smart guy. Some will tell you Columbus was Jewish, others Spanish, etc. which tells me what I always knew and that is that EVERYBODY wishes they were Italian. Anyway, Columbus' son, Diego, became the first Governor of Hispaniola and this was his palace, apparently built by native Indian slaves, Tainon Boca Chica, and others. I need to look into how so few were able to enslave so many. It's a shame.
Arrives at the Ben Gurion International Airport
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte arrives at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv on September 2, 2018 to embark on his Official Visit to the State of Israel.
Philippine Ambassador to Israel Nathaniel Imperial and Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Rafael Harpaz receive the President upon his arrival.
In his four-day visit, President Duterte is set to meet with the Filipino community in the State and shall witness the signing of agreements in the areas of labor, science, and investment between the two nations.
Likewise, he is scheduled to visit the Open Doors Monument at the municipality of Rishon LeZion. This monument is a memorial of the open door policy by former Philippine Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon to accept and shelter the Jews who were escaping from the Holocaust in Europe in the late 1930s.
According to Ambassador Imperial, throughout the 61 years of formal diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Israel, President Duterte is the first Chief Executive to visit the State.

Christopher Columbus: What Really Happened

An educational animation which recounts the four voyages of Columbus. Hope you enjoy!
Bibliography at bottom of description
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This video is meant to give a non-bias account of the events which unfolded when Columbus and his crew made contact with the people of the Caribbean. Of course, I was not able to fit everything into the video; I had to omit details, such as the fact that the Taino were not the only people that Columbus encountered (there were also the Ciguayo tribe and Carib cannibals). A second particular is that not all fault should lie directly on Columbus' shoulders. His crew of 1,200 for the second journey consisted partly of convicts and landless nobles, the worst type of people with which to build a settlement. Another fact is that Columbus grew up in societies (Genoa, then Portugal) that kept domestic slaves.
I have no political agenda for making this video. I am a student of history and I have tried to give an account of Columbus' journeys that is as close as we can possibly get to the truth.
I will I admit that I am not a fan of Columbus. I think he was cruel, even for his time. We cannot judge a 15th-century human from a 21st-century perspective; but even for the 15th century, he was an awful arbiter.

SUMMARY
=======
The history of the Jews in Argentina goes back to the early sixteenth centuries, following the Jewish expulsion from Spain. Sephardi Jews fleeing persecution immigrated with explorers and colonists to settle in what is now Argentina. In addition, many of the Portuguese traders in the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata were Jewish. An organized Jewish community, however, did not develop until after Argentina gained independence from Spain in 1816. By mid-century, Jews from France and other parts of Western Europe, fleeing the social and economic disruptions of revolutions, began to settle in Argentina.Reflecting the composition of the later immigration waves, the current Jewish population is 80% Ashkenazi; while Sephardic and Mizrahi are a minority. Argentina has the largest Jewish population of any country in Latin America, although numerous Jews left during the 1970s and 1980s to escape the repression of the military junta, emigrating to Israel, West Europe (especially Spain), and North America. The Jewish population in Argentina is the largest in Latin America, the third largest in the Americas, and the world's seventh largest outside Israel.
During a major emigration wave in the 2000s, more than 10,000 Argentine Jews settled in Israel.
