Bardejov, Slovakia - Synagogue and City Walls
A visit to perhaps the best preserved synagogue in Slovakia, and the old surrounding walls that protected the inhabitants of this once important trade route city.
The Old Synagogue in Bardejov: rescue, recovery and restoration
The mission of the project „Bardejov suburbium – rescue, recovery
and restoration of the Old Synagogue“ is to revive the unique compound of Jewish ritual buildings on Mlynská Street in Bardejov.
The project has been approved within framework of the program “SK 05 – Conversation and Revitalisation of Cultural and Natural Heritage” and is supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and co-financed by the State Budget of the Slovak Republic. Thanks to a costly reconstruction and restoration of the synagogue, a multipurpose representative space was created. The main hall of the building is to be the venue for exhibitions, concerts, conferences or lectures. The exhibition in the women’s gallery will draw closer to the history of the Jewish community in Bardejov. The courtyard of the synagogue offers further possibilities of use. The longterm priority is to connect all buildings on the compound, the open spaces and the Holocaust Memorial in one compact zone of World Cultural Heritage, which will serve the needs of Bardejov residents and contribute to the development of cultural tourism.

First Person with Arye Ephrath May 23 2018
Through the First Person program, Holocaust survivors have the opportunity to share their remarkable personal stories of hope, tragedy, and survival with thousands of visitors at the Museum. This program was recorded on May 23, 2018. It features Arye Ephrath, who was born into a Jewish family on April 7, 1942, in Bardejov, Czechoslovakia, which is present day Slovakia. Arye was born the same day as the first deportation of Jews from his hometown. Nazi authorities had ordered Jews to report to the town square, but Arye's mother, Miriam, ignored the order. She gave birth in the basement of their home with assistance from her maid. Arye’s father Samuel was absent during the birth as he had escaped to evade the Nazis. Samuel decided to remain in Czechoslovakia, but Miriam was able to get to Hungary with Arye. Miriam and Arye moved from inn to inn to avoid detection, splitting time between Budapest and Beregszasz. In 1944, the Nazis revoked Arye’s father’s work permit. He escaped to Sisov, a village in western Czechoslovakia, with his wife and Arye.
A local priest agreed to hide Arye’s parents, but not Arye as he posed too much of a risk as a young child. This photograph is of the church where Arye’s parents hid.
Jan and Irena Mierni, a local shepherd and his wife, agreed to take Arye if he would dress like a girl in order to avoid suspicion from the townspeople, because the couple only had daughters. The Miernis changed Arye's name to Annicka for the duration of his time in hiding. Here we see Arye disguised as a girl.
Later, Arye's parents, fearing a Nazi raid of the church, found another place to hide. They hid for eight months in a hole dug in the ground covered by hay. Finally, on Arye’s 3rd birthday, the Soviet Army liberated Czechoslovakia and Arye was reunited with his parents.

Visit Bratislava, Slovakia - Unravel Travel TV
Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and the country's largest city. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Known as Pressburg to German-speakers or Pozsony to Hungarian-speakers, Bratislava got its present name only 90 years ago. But the city has a long and proud history that dates back to pre-Roman times. The hillsides on the edge of the city have been home to vineyards for centuries, and close to Bratislava are wine towns where you can taste the best - and it is startlingly good - that Slovakia has to offer. In the city itself there is plenty to see and do. Bratislava's long history - as home to Celts, Romans, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, and of course Slovaks means there is an impressive range of architecture, languages and cuisine. Impressive homes of the Austro-Hungarian noble families who built palaces here dot the city, and many of them are now open to the public as museums and galleries. The castle, with its long and chequered history (it has been destroyed more than once), is now undergoing a major restoration. There are great views over the medieval old town and the Danube valley from its fortifications. Bratislava was once one of the most important centres of Jewish learning in Europe. A unique memorial to its most renowned rabbi, the Chatam Sofer, and the city's Museum of Jewish Culture celebrate this heritage. Communism too left its mark: across the river, the unmistakable ranks of concrete housing blocks paneláky in Slovak line the horizon, with the unique UFO-style New Bridge in the foreground.
The Danube River itself is, of course, one of the city's main assets. There are several cafes along its banks, within walking distance of the centre. The 'UFO' itself contains an eponymous bar high above the river. The pedestrian decks of the New and Old Bridges are good places to watch the river traffic, including huge Danube barges, glide past. Alternatively, you can take to the water yourself: daily hydrofoil services link the city with nearby Vienna.
A succession of four and five-star hotels have opened in the city over the past few years and quality accommodation is now readily available. There are also more cheap options than ever before, with several backpacker hostels in the centre of town. Major music acts often play concerts in Bratislava, while the Slovak Philharmonic and the opera and ballet of the Slovak National Theatre regularly put on world-class performances. Numerous restaurants offering international cuisine from Slovak to French to Argentinian to Japanese and excellent local beer and wine fill the city centre, alongside lively bars, lounges and clubs. If, having enjoying the food and drink, you feel like walking or biking there are almost unlimited opportunities in the forested hills to the north of the city, or along the Danube to the south, where inline skating is also very popular on the scores of kilometres of traffic-free paths.
