Das Holstentor („Holstein-Tor“) ist ein Stadttor, das die Altstadt der Hansestadt Lübeck nach Westen begrenzt. Wegen seines hohen Bekanntheitsgrades gilt es heute als Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Das spätgotische Gebäude gehört zu den Überresten der Befestigungsanlagen der Lübecker Stadtbefestigung. Es ist neben dem Burgtor das einzige erhaltene Stadttor Lübecks.

The Holstentor (Holstein Gate) is a gate that limits the old town of Lübeck to the west. Because of its high visibility, it is now considered the city's landmarks. The late Gothic building is one of the remains of the fortifications of Lübeck city fortifications. It is next to the castle gate, the only remaining gate of Lübeck.

Lübeck ( population (2005): 213,983) is the second largest city in Schleswig-Holstein, in northern Germany. It was for several centuries the capital of the Hanseatic League (Queen of the Hanse) and because of its Brick Gothic architectural heritage is on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. Lübeck is situated at the Trave river with the largest German port at the Baltic Sea. The old part of the town is an island enclosed by the Trave river. The Elbe-Lübeck Canal connects the Trave with the Elbe river. Another important river near the town center is the Wakenitz. Autobahn 1 connects Lübeck with Hamburg and Denmark. The borough Travemünde is a sea resort and ferry port at the coast of the Baltic Sea.
The old town centre is dominated by seven church steeples. The oldest ones are the Dom and the Marienkirche (Saint Mary's), both from the 13th and 14th centuries. Once the town could only be entered by passing one of four town gates, of which the Holstentor (1478) is the best-known. The entire old town has kept a medieval look with old buildings and narrow streets.

Arriving by train, the first eye catcher you will encounter is the Holsten Gate. A true symbol of the city. It used to be the third gate in line, but during the industrial revolution people needed space, and the gates were demolished. This one only survived because the Lubeck citizens voted it to stay, by a majority of just one vote.
You might notice the towers aren’t really leveled. The water around the old town and the lack of connection underground, made them two towers of Pisa.
The inscription says: harmony inside, peace outside. Remember Lubeck was a rich city, and war would just cost a lot of money.
The entire Old Town is a unesco world Heritage side, since the late 80’s
And if you love this Brick Gothic architecture, St. Mary’s Church is a must visit. It was used as an example for 70 other churches in the Baltic region. So yes, this is a building of high architectural importance.
Walking the streets I was surprised by the contrast within the city. You’ll find busy shopping streets, and lonely alley’s in less than a minute from one another. And keep your eyes open for signs like this. These are the gateways to the smallest streets in Lubeck.
What used to be tiny rooms back in the middle ages, are almost doll like houses today. Some of them over 400 years old.
If you see a gas lamp, the alley is not privately owned and you’re allowed to enter.
The old town is home to 5 large churches. Besides St. Mary’s church, St. Peter’s caught my eye. Go around sunset, and you’ll have a beautiful view over the city.
By far my favorite place in the old town has everything to do with theatre puppets.
The theatre is situated in 5 old merchant houses. Inside you find a complex system of chambers and halls, which really makes you feel lost in puppet world.
There are puppets from all over the globe in here. You’ll find loads of different techniques to play with them. From centuries ago, till very recent times.
It shows very well how big the world of theatre puppets actually is.
You might notice small models of the famous buildings, made out of Marzipan. And you guessed it: Lubeck is famous for it. Especially this shop: Niederegger. This treat, once being affordable by kings only, is to be found in numerous shapes and sizes. And if you get the Niederegger marzipan, it will be made without any sugar. Just
An other spot foodies might have heard of is Schiffergesellschaft. Surrounded by old model ships you feel like traveling in time. It’s a busy place, so make your reservation in time.
This popular spot made me wonder, what’s there off the beaten track?
So I took a little detour to Veg-at-table. A little vegan spot, with some great choices for lunch. They are just closing up in the late afternoon here. So after a good plate of food I asked them for a nice spot for an afternoon coffee.
That’s how I ended up in Marae. An other vegan place, with great coffee and even greater cakes. No sugar, but dates only :D
And yet again with very heartwarming owners.
They gave me the tip for our final, and best hidden gem: Café Bohne.
Just out of the Old town, hidden between the houses. You must go here on a Sunday morning. The owner makes literally the best breakfast buffet in town. With Mediterranian dishes, one even better than the other.

Centuries ago Lübeck was a major trading power. The well-preserved old town testifies to its glory and wealth in medieval times. Lübeck’s old town, comprising around 1,800 listed buildings and historic alleyways, was awarded UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status in 1987. The main landmark, the Holstentor, is a fortified gate. In medieval times the city built a system of barriers to protect the Hanseatic League capital and the rich merchants who lived there.

The Holsten Gate is a city gate marking off the western boundary of the old center of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. Built in 1464, the Brick Gothic construction is one of the relics of Lübeck's medieval city fortifications and one of two remaining city gates, the other being the Citadel Gate (Burgtor). Known for its two-round towers and arched entrance, it is regarded today as a symbol of the city. Together with the old city centre (Altstadt) of Lübeck it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
The Holsten Gate is composed of a south tower, a north tower and a central building. It has four floors, except for the ground floor of the central block, where the gate's passageway is located. The side facing west (away from the city) is called the field side, the side facing the city the city side. The two towers and the central block appear as one construction when viewed from the city side. On the field side, the three units can be clearly differentiated. Here the two towers form semicircles which at their widest point extend 3.5 metres beyond the central block. The towers have conical roofs; the central block has a pediment.
The passageway once had two gates on the field side, which have not survived. A portcullis installed in 1934 does not correspond to the original security installations. Instead, there was once a so-called pipe organ at this location, with individual bars which could be lowered separately rather than together as a set. Thus it was possible to first lower all but one or two rods, leaving a small gap for their own men to slip through later. There is an inscription over the passageway on both the city side and the field side.
Functionally, the field and the city side have very different designs. While the city side is richly decorated with windows, this would be inappropriate on the field side considering the possibility of combat situations. On the field side there are accordingly only a few small windows. In addition, the walls are interspersed with embrasures. Also, the wall thickness on the field side is greater than on the city side: 3.5 metres compared to less than 1 metre. The reasoning during construction may have been to be able to quickly destroy the gate from the city side in an emergency, so that it would not fall into enemy hands as a bulwark.
In 1950 the Holsten Gate again served as a museum, this time for municipal history. Relics from historic Lübeck were presented, the development of medieval Lübeck was shown using models and pictures, and models of the ships of the Hanseatic League and the flagship Eagle of Lübeck were exhibited. The features of this museum were also not historically accurate. For example, the museum also included a torture chamber with a dungeon, a rack and other torture devices. But the Holsten Gate had never contained anything like that.
The Holsten Gate is located in the Lübeck city wall complex on the main access road connecting the main railway station with the suburb of St. Lorenz and crossing the Puppen Bridge. The Holsten Gate Square (Holstentorplatz) is enclosed on one side by a branch of the Deutsche Bundesbank; with new construction extending the original Reichsbank building to the rear. On the other side there is the brick expressionist Holsten Gate Hall (Holstentorhalle) between the historic salt warehouses and the DGB's House of Trade Unions (Gewerkschaftshaus). This building was altered with funds from the Possehl Foundation to create a rehearsal and teaching facility for Lübeck's University of Music (Musikhochschule Lübeck) was rebuilt. Another pedestrian bridge over the Upper Trave River was completed in spring 2007 to provide a connection the university's main building complex in the old city centre.
