Holy Assumption Cathedral, Vladimir
Russia - Vladimir - Assumption or Dormition Cathedral & Cathedral of Saint Demetrius
Vladimir is a city in Russia located 200 kilometers to the east of Moscow. Vladimir served as the country's capital city in the 12th-13th centuries.
[
Modern Vladimir is a part of the Golden Ring of the ancient Russian cities. Its chief monuments, White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal, are inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage List.
The magnificent five-domed Assumption Cathedral was designed as a sepulcher of grand princes and dedicated to the holy icon Theotokos of Vladimir, which had been brought to the city by Andrew the Pious. The Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir (sometimes translated Assumption Cathedral) was a mother church of Medieval Russia in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Originally erected in 1158 to 1160, the cathedral, with six pillars and five domes, was expanded in 1185 to 1189 to reflect the augmented prestige of Vladimir. At of 1178 m², it remained the largest of Russian churches for the next 300 or 400 years.
The exterior walls of the church are covered with elaborate carvings. The interior was painted in the 12th century and then repainted by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Chernyi in 1408.

The warrior-like Cathedral of Saint Demetrius was built in 1194–1197 as a private chapel of Vsevolod the Big Nest and was consecrated to his holy patron, St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki.
The most striking feature of the cathedral are the extensive shallow relief carvings which cover the upper half of the exterior walls. The source of the artisans and provenance for these carvings seems to be an amalgam of many influences. The carvings consist of animals and plants as well as figures in rows and ornamental patterns, based on pagan beliefs and traditions, traditional Russia folklore or Christian theological themes. The most prominent scene, on the west façade in the central bay, features King David surrounded by angels and chimeras. King David is also featured on the south façade central bay surrounded by warrior saints. Other prominent figures, in addition to Christ and Mary, include Solomon, Alexander the Great, Hercules, warrior saints and churchmen. The north façade shows the donor, Vsevolod with his sons.

Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov, 18 March (O.S. 6 March) 1844 – 21 June (O.S. 8 June) 1908, was a Russian composer and a member of the group of composers known as The Five. He was a master of orchestration. His best-known orchestral compositions — Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture, and the symphonic suite Scheherazade — are staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his 15 operas.
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's style employed Russian folk song and lore along with exotic harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements in a practice known as musical orientalism. Rimsky-Korsakov appreciated Western musical techniques after he became a professor of musical composition, harmony, and orchestration at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871. His techniques of composition and orchestration were further enriched by his exposure to the works of Richard Wagner.
For much of his life, Rimsky-Korsakov combined his composition and teaching with a career in the Russian military as the civilian Inspector of Naval Bands, where he expanded his knowledge of woodwind and brass playing.
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov left a considerable body of original Russian nationalist compositions. He prepared works by The Five for performance, which brought them into the active classical repertoire, and shaped a generation of younger composers and musicians during his decades as an educator. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is therefore considered the main architect of the Russian style of composition. While Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's style was based on those of Glinka, Balakirev, Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt and, for a brief period, Wagner, he transmitted this style directly to two generations of Russian composers and influenced non-Russian composers including Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Paul Dukas, and Ottorino Respighi.

The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya is an opera in four acts by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The libretto was written by Vladimir Belsky, and is based on a combination of two Russian legends: that of St. Fevroniya of Murom, and the city of Kitezh, which became invisible when attacked by the Tatars. The opera was completed in 1905, and the premiere performance took place at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, on February 7, 1907.

All foreigners who live, lived or have visited Russia can agree on one thing, Russia is an amazing country. Now I’m not gonna do a pitch on how amazing it is. It is however, my adopted country and I can say one thing for sure, Russia gets ridiculously bad press!!!!
The reason I started this project was so we can honestly show what Russia is really like. This is to benefit anybody wanting to visit Russia and wants honest information. This is not Government sponsored or any sort of propaganda. On this site you will see the good and the bad.
The Idea is simple. Anyone can upload a video here. As long as it is about Russia. Please make clips about anything to do with Russia. About your daily life, events, places to visit, work, study, living, hints.
If you are a foreigner living in Russia then you qualify for a FREE Action Camera! To help you to make videos! See the link on the homepage menu for more information.
If you are viewing this site as a guest, I hope that you enjoy the content. If you have any questions at all about anything related to Russia, feel free to contact me. I will be glad to assist you in any way that I can.
My name is Sam Hyland. I am an Englishman living in Russia since 2004. I have been involved in a number of different projects during my time here and had lots of experiences, good and bad. As a foreigner, I understand the difficulties of moving to Russia (Not because Russia is a big, bad, scary country) because while it maybe big, it is far from scary! Russia is an exciting country and has lots to offer anyone who would like to give it a try.
The main difficulty with coming to Russia is of course the language. If you don’t speak it, then it’s difficult to get information about how to come, where to stay and what to do. There are so many unanswered questions and huge media bias which provides a lack of credible information as to what life in Russia is genuinely like.
For this reason, above all, I decided to create this site.
So who am I? And why should you trust me?
As I already mentioned, I have lived here for a number of years. I also have gone through the whole process of relocating to a new country, and all the ups and downs as a foreigner living in Russia. Hopefully I can make your transition easier because of it.
When I first arrived in Russia, I had nobody to help me, so I found lots of foreign friends and spoke only English with them. They were my support network and if it wasn’t for them, then my life would have been very difficult.
Before arriving in Russia, I had no idea about what it would be like, it was a complete mystery. While I don’t want to ruin these first time experiences for you, I know that there are so many questions that you would like answering and through this site I can do that for you.
I have had the chance to meet and become friends with some fantastic people and had some really amazing experiences. Russian people are extremely hospitable and I have been lucky enough to be invited to many Russian weddings, festivals, parties, events and so much more….
I live in the city of Vladimir (2 hours drive from Moscow) This is a provincial Russian town with a population of about 350,000. Usually when people think about Russia, they think of Moscow or St Pertersburg, While these are both amazing and fascinating places, there is far more to Russia than just these cities.
During my time here I have worked in a number of professions and have a large contact base. I can help you with all sorts of questions. About life, study, work and travel in Russia! And if I don’t know the answer to your question, then I’m sure I know somebody who can answer your question!
What do I do? How do I live here?
Right now I’m an Affiliate Marketer, so I make money online. I also Run a small language school.
In 2012 I opened a Volunteer language school in Vladimir. For 4 years I employed volunteers from the UK who came to Russia to teach English and study Russian language. I ran this program with the association of Nottingham University, we took on many 3rd year Russian language students who lived, studied and taught in Vladimir. You can see our site, though it’s in Russian!
I have the experience of assisting foreigners with the process of travelling to Russia and I can help assist you, just reach out to me, I will be happy to help.
Below is some ways to get in contact with me

Russia: Holy procession held in Moscow on anniv. of Baptism of Rus'
A religious procession was held in central Moscow, Friday, to mark the anniversary of the Orthodox baptism of Kievan Rus, Friday.
The ceremony was led by Metropolitan of Krutitsy and Kolomna Juvenile. The procession began at the Dormition Cathedral, situated to the north of the Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin, and ended at the St. Vladimir statue.
Although the Christianisation of Kievan Rus' occurred in several stages, the definitive date of the Christianisation of Kiev dates back to the baptism of Vladimir the Great in 988. St. Vladimir was baptised at Chersonesos before he went on to baptise his family and residents in Kiev.

Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir - outstanding monument of white-stone architecture of pre-Mongol Russia. Metropolitan Vladimir Orthodox church of the diocese; and National Museum. Historically, before the rise of Moscow, was the main (cathedral) church of the Vladimir-Suzdal, there married to the great reign of Vladimir and Moscow princes. Monument of Russian architecture of the XII century, which served as a model for a number of more recent councils, including the Assumption Cathedral Fioravanti Aristotle. One of the few temples in which are preserved the unique frescoes by Andrei Rublev.
In 1992 the Assumption Cathedral was included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The initial white-stone cathedral was built by the Grand Duke Andrei Bogolubsky in 1158-1160 years. Already in 1161 the cathedral was painted.
According to Tatishchev, by securing such bou him (Bogolyubsky) God hath given him masters for the structure thereof from smart land; For the remaining structure in Vladimir, but more so on the gate Gradsky apparently that was enough architectures ... Wizards also have been sent by the Emperor Frederic Pervago (Frederick Barbarossa), with whom Andrew was in friendship as below will be. However, it should be noted that a well-known stereotype associated with the arrival of Andrew masters of all lands applies only to work on the decoration of Cathedral of the Assumption: In the same year created byst Church of the Holy Virgin in Volodymyr pious and bogolyubnym Prince Andrew, and decorate th marvelous manifold icons, and Drago stone baa schisla and church vessels and top Her pozlati by faith as his, and his zeal for the Holy Virgin, God has given to him out of all lands all wizards and adorned w more than the INEGI of the Church. According to the chronicle text, it is not a builder, and an icon painter, jeweler and goldsmith.
Cathedral of the Assumption 1158-1160 years was shestistolpnym, trёhapsidnym constructed from high quality white stone (the stone temple Bogolyubsky quality was significantly higher than the galleries Vsevolod stone). Side dome of the square -. About 6.4 m Despite the fact that the temple was shestistolpnym his bushel visually perceived almost a cubic (without taking into account the length of the apses - about 22.5 m, width - about 17.5 m, height - about 21 meters ), the proportions were quite elegant. And in the interior and exterior forms aspiration up I felt.
