Matt and Krista discover simple church
June 2008
Directed and filmed by Caleb Sutter
Edited by Jim Au
Scene 1. Reluctant at first to check it out, Matt experiences church in a new way, having been invited by Ed to a home meeting. He shares about it with his wife, Krista.
Scene 2. The Lord's Supper is served at a subsequent meeting, and Matt questions Ed whether this is just another church ritual, like what he was hoping to get away from in the first place.
Scene 3. Ed and Kevin help Matt to understand the importance of obeying Jesus, in love. They share with him seven basic commands of Jesus.
Scene 4. Matt is really excited about this simple form of church, and he hopes that growth will mean moving into a larger facility. George graciously explains three levels of authority for all followers of Jesus, in order to show how buildings and facilities fit into God's overall plan.
Scene 5. Matt and Krista have been part of this home fellowship for a year, and now George challenges them to consider starting their own gathering in which their friends would feel more comfortable. Privately, Ed discusses the relevance of starting his own group, and Matt is not sure if he is ready or able to do so.
Scene 6. Matt has enjoyed starting a new group and is beginning to care for new believers. Jim has recently become a believer in Jesus and is seeking immediate baptism. Later on, Ed rebukes Matt for how he mishandled this opportunity.
Scene 7. As Matt and Krista's group begins to multiply, they are now feeling overwhelmed with trying to care for all the new groups and their problems. Ed explains to Matt how Jesus intends for us to handle this, using sound biblical principles.
Scene 8. Matt confides to Galen that he is not having the same kind of emotional experience with Jesus that others appear to be enjoying. Galen encourages him by telling about the work of the Holy Spirit in his own life and praying for Matt.
Scene 9. Galen is telling Ed about things he learned from churches overseas where the gospel is not welcome. When Matt arrives, he is encouraged to discover that the work he has been doing at home has had far- reaching effects, elsewhere.
Vespers at Greece's oldest Church Panagia Ekatontapiliani, Paros
In Parikia, the capital of Paros, close to the port, there is the imposing church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani (also known as the Church of 100 doors). It is one of the most important and best preserved Christian churches of Greece. According to the tradition of Paros, it was built in the middle of the 4th century by St. Helen or by Constantine the Great, who fulfilled his mother's vow. At the same location there was a chapel, before the 4th century. Saint Helen had stopped to worship at this chapel, on her way to the Holy Land to find the True Cross. According to the legend, Saint Helen made a vow to the icon of the Virgin Mary that she would build a bigger and more glorious church to her Grace in Paros, if she found the True Cross. Saint Helen fulfilled her vow, however the church was destroyed probably by a fire and it was rebuilt during the reign of Justinian, in the middle of the 6th century.
The name Ekatontapiliani or Katapoliani derives from the term katapola and it means towards the city, probably because it points to the area where the ancient city of Paros was located. The official name of the church today is Ekatontapiliani, which is also associated to a legend: Katapoliani has ninety nine visible doors. The 100th door is closed and can not be seen. It will appear and it will open when Constantinople becomes Greek again....
There is another legend, which is tragic and which is associated with the big Monumental Gate that was installed at the northern wing of the building complex of Ekatontapiliani, a few meters from the chapel of Saint Theodosia, by Professor Orlandos, during the restoration of Ekatontapiliani. The two human forms that are sculpted on the cubical bases that support the marble decoration excite the popular imagination. According to the popular legend, during the reign of Justinian, Ekatontapiliani was build by the former assistant of the chief craftsman of Agia Sofia, Ignace. When the pupil finished the temple, he invited the master to admire his work. The chief craftsman felt envy and was afraid that his pupil would overshadow his reputation. Pretending that he wanted to show him an architectural fault, he took his pupil on the roof of the church. From there, the chief craftsman pushed his pupil with intent to kill him. The pupil however held on to the teacher and finally they both fell and were killed in front of the church. The two sculpted forms on the base of these gates depict the chief craftsman and the pupil who were killed there.

We need to learn to fly - here and now (Fr. Andrei)
Fr. Andrei Lemeshonok, priest of Saint Elisabeth Monastery in Minsk, Belarus, gives us a beautiful and uplifting invitation to take our spiritual wings and fly to the Kingdom of God.
Subtitles: English
Video source: Saint Elisabeth Monastery,
Fr. Andrei:
We can even fly... Only if we really want this.
Probably some of us have already flown... It's dangerous to fly, you can crash from the fall... We have to take this risk. There is no other way out.
One may be afraid to fly. They say: jump! And he answers: no, I won't jump!
But in the last day of our lives, in the last minutes, we will have to fly, to get off the ground.
And where will we go if we don't have this experience? Down...
Therefore, brothers and sisters, we must dare. We must learn to fly.
Maybe we still have small wings, but they will ultimately grow if we lift our eyes to Heaven and long for the Heavenly Kingdom.
They will grow, for sure... they will turn into large wings...
And we will fly, even here on earth...
Does the Church say this in vain? Let us lift up our hearts! Is the Liturgy merely a service? Maybe it is very beautiful, important, but is it just a human work?
No, these are already spiritual flights. Yet they are not dreams, but reality. That is why, of course, we don't want to fall.
And if we fall - and we will fall, for sure - and something will break, we shouldn't complain, shouldn't lament over it, but to we should rise up and follow Christ.
And repeat this until the last day of our lives. And then we shall we fly... And we will fly to a place in which there will be only love. Only love and nothing else...
There will be no arguments: it's mine / it's yours, you love me / not, I like / not, I want it / not.
It will only be love. There will be no diseases. There will be no troubles. There will be no sorrows. There will be life. An endless life in God.
This is why we came to the Church.
The eagle chicks learn to fly. Now they are chicks, but later they will become eagles.
So... learn to fly! Learn it, my dear!
