Russia: Hundreds bid farewell to mall fire victims in Kemerovo
Hundreds of mourners gathered in Keremovo’s Church of the Holy Trinity on Wednesday to bid their final farewell to the victims of the 'Winter Cherry' shopping mall tragedy in the Siberian city last Sunday.
Relatives, friends and scores of others joined the farewell service and lit candles in memory of Mash (10) and Kostya (8) of Agarkov family, who died alongside their 68-year grandma in the fire.
Remembering the two children, representatives from School 25 said they were very good, well brought-up children, top students.
“How is it possible to live with it when you realise that you will pass by their beds and the children are not out visiting someone. They will never come back and never play with their toys,” relative Yulia Kutuzova said, holding back tears.
The first 13 victims of the tragedy, most of them children, will be laid to rest during the day.
At least 64 people, including many children, were killed in the fire which engulfed the shopping mall in Kemerovo on Sunday.
According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the fire escape routes were blocked inside the mall.

Russia: Moscovites honour the memory of St. Petersburg metro blast victims
Moscow residents continued to lay flowers and light candles in honour of Monday's St. Petersburg metro blast victims at the Leningrad monument of the Russian Hero Cities memorial, located along the Kremlin Wall in the Russian capital, Tuesday.
Some 150 students also gathered at the site of the memorial in Moscow's Alexander Gardens on Monday evening, in a coordinated action to support those affected by the attack, which left 14 people dead and a further 49 in hospital.
An unidentified explosive device went off inside the train carriage as it travelled through a tunnel between the Sennaya Ploschad and Institute of Technology metro stations at 14:40 local time (11:40 GMT) on Monday, rocking the St. Petersburg metro network. A second unexploded bomb was reportedly deactivated at Ploschad Vostaniya station.
Russia's Investigative Committee opened a criminal investigation into the incident and a three-day mourning period has been declared by St. Petersburg authorities, beginning on Tuesday.

NIKOLO-BERLYUKOVSKY MONASTERY, MOSCOW OBLAST, RUSSIA. НИКОЛО-БЕРЛЮКОВСКИЙ МОНАСТЫРЬ.
In 1719, the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker became the main temple of the new monastery — the Nikolo-Berlyukovsky desert, which after some time was removed from the jurisdiction of the Chudov monastery and assigned to the Stromyn Assumption monastery. The first Abbot of the desert appointed hieromonk Diodorus.
From October until April 1731 1734 the Abbot of the monastery was hieromonk Josiah Samgin, the driver of which was Princess Mary and Theodosia, sister of Peter the Great. In April 1734, the hieromonk Josiah, from whom various forbidden manuscripts were found, was stripped of his dignity, whipped with a nostrils and sent to Kamchatka[2], and the inhabitants of the monastery were distributed to other monasteries.

In 1770 the Nicolo-Berlyukovsky monastery was abolished and Nicholas Church declared a parish Church. March 15, 1779 the monastery was restored as a provincial desert by decree of the Moscow Spiritual Consistory. Hieromonk Ioasaf was appointed rector of the revived monastery. In December 1779, according to the decree of the Synod, Berlyukovsky deserts was among the eight provincial monasteries in the Moscow diocese. In 1786, on the site of the old Trinity Church, a new one was laid; the plan was approved personally by Metropolitan Plato, who also consecrated the new Church and sent books and utensils for it from Moscow.
In 1794, died the Abbot Joasaph. His work was continued by his brother — hieromonk Nicholas. Later the monastery was managed by the monks of St. Nicholas monastery Pecherskogo: Pachomius (1806), Ioannikii (1811), Nicholas (1827).

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: MUTED MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS
(1 May 2000) Russian/Nat
Small parades of trade unionists and Communists have marched in muted and chilly May Day celebrations in Moscow and across the former Soviet Union.
But the celebration of international workers' solidarity was a pale echo of Soviet-era celebrations with their massive government-organised parades past Kremlin leaders atop Lenin's tomb on Red Square.
Most Russians, who grow much of their own food, used the holiday to plant seedlings at their suburban cottages.
Thousands of Muscovites, battling unseasonably cold weather, joined marches through the Russian capital on Monday to mark the traditional May Day holiday.
This year, May Day competed for public attention with Orthodox Easter Sunday, which fell the day before.
Patriarch Alexy II, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, celebrated Easter week services on Monday in one of the cathedrals in the Kremlin.
As a result, the number of marchers taking part was less than expected.
In all, some 15-thousand people joined a trade union march under blue union banners fluttering in a near-freezing breeze along Tverskaya Ulitsa, a main thoroughfare leading to city hall.
The members and supporters of the Moscow Federation of Trade Unions - traditionally centrist rather than left-wing - were addressed by mayor Yury Luzhkov outside the city hall.
With the favourite target of past Communist parades, former President Boris Yeltsin, in retirement, slogans tended toward demands for higher social benefits and minimum wages.
President Vladimir Putin, elected on March 26, enjoys widespread support, and many Communists appear ready to work with him.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
People always believe and hope, and we think that our hope will coincide with the choice that the people made when they elected Putin president.
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Naumov, Marcher
Separately, Communists and other left-wing groups paraded with red Soviet flags, marching past a towering statue of Lenin on Kaluga Square in central Moscow.
Police put the number of Communist marchers at seven-thousand.
The marchers were led by party leader Gennady Zyuganov, who told the crowd that - unlike foreign institutions - the communists and other left-wing movements could improve conditions for the people of Russia.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
While Russia is being damaged on the international scene, its markets are being restricted. The IMF keeps on interfering in the internal affairs of our country.
SUPER CAPTION: Gennady Zyuganov, Communist Party Leader
In Soviet times, the May Day holiday one was one of the main events on the Communist calendar.
Demonstrators used to march through the city centre and across Red Square, where the Communist hierarchy greeted the columns from atop Lenin's mausoleum.
But - despite the end of the Soviet Union and dwindling numbers of marchers - some of those taking part in the celebrations on Monday thought May Day was as relevant now as it was then.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Today, this holiday is more current than ever, because people are so poor and have their backs against the wall, such that it could end catastrophically for the oligarchs very soon.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail, Marcher
Moscow wasn't the only city where May Day was celebrated.
Trade union officials said several thousand people marched in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Vladivostok in the Far East, Novosibirsk and Yakutsk in Siberia and a half-dozen other cities.
Marchers in the Siberian town of Kemerovo walked through a thin coating of wet snow.
Celebrations were muted in the former Soviet republic of Belarus, with leaders of left-wing parties laying flowers
at a monument to Lenin.

Gologory is a village founded in 1099 in Zolochiv district of Lviv region in Ukraine. It's population today is 658 people. Formerly it was a town called Duklya. In the village, the river Gnyla Lypa (Rotten Linden) falls into the Zolota Lipa (Golden Linden,) which then flows into the Dnister River and into the Black Sea. It's famous for its history, Orthodox and Catholic (Kościół ) churches, Jewish Synagogue and cemetery. There are many ancient tombstones as well as a monument to St. Mark, which stands on top of the hill in place of burial of Pasha of Batu Khan (a Mongol Khanate ruler and founder of the Golden Horde, a division of the Mongol Empire. Batu was a son of Jochi and grandson of Genghis Khan.,) as a symbol of victory of the battle with Tatar invaders (1442). Gologory obtained Magdeburg rights - a set of town privileges first developed by Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor (936–973) which regulated the degree of internal autonomy within cities and villages, granted by the local ruler. in the 13th and 14th centuries, Magdeburg rights were granted to more than a hundred cities, in Central Europe. In these lands, they were mostly known as the German or Teutonic law. This role remained until the old Germanic laws were successively replaced with the Roman law under the influence of the Imperial Chamber Court a judicial institution in the Holy Roman Empire. Thus, being a free city it was able to trade and develop culturally.
