Fires scorch United Kingdom. Amidst dry conditions that have emerged since March throughout the UK, firefighters worked to extinguish wildfires this past weekend in Wales, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. On Saturday, April 30, seven grassland fires were ablaze in Wales, as a large forest fire burned in county Gwynedd. On Sunday, crews were battling three fires spurred on by strong winds in England's Lancashire County, with 100 firefighters working for a third day to put out a fire on moorland.
Blazes also scorched Scotland's western Torridon and Lochaber. Meanwhile in Northern Ireland, the National Trust warned that the major gorse brush fires engulfing regions of the Mourne Mountains in County Down would cause immense damage. More than 1,100 such wildfires have been reported in Northern Ireland in the last two weeks, with residents near the flames being evacuated. The British Met Office has warned that rain in many areas is at 40% normal levels following the driest March in more than a century, and that water use restrictions are likely to be imposed soon if the dry conditions continue.
