Romania - Sibiu - Holy Trinity Cathedral
Holy Trinity Cathedral in Sibiu, Romania.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral, Sibiu (Romanian: Catedrala Sfânta Treime din Sibiu), located at 35 Mitropoliei Street, Sibiu, Romania, is the seat of the Romanian Orthodox Archbishop of Sibiu and Metropolitan of Transylvania. It was built in the style of a Byzantine basilica, inspired by Hagia Sophia,[1] with the main spires influenced by Transylvanian church architecture and Baroque elements.[1]
The idea of building an Orthodox cathedral in Sibiu began with Metropolitan Andrei Şaguna, who in the autumn of 1857 asked Emperor Franz Joseph I for permission to send a circular to his diocese requesting that priests and laymen give donations. He sent the letter before Christmas that year, and the first donor was the Emperor himself, who gave 1000 gold coins, followed by the governor of Transylvania with 50, Şaguna with 2000 florins, and many others. Donations continued to come in following Şaguna's death in 1873; the cornerstone was laid on 18 August 1902, when Ioan Meţianu was Metropolitan. In order to free the space to build the cathedral (which took up five lots on Mitropoliei Street and three on Xenopol Street, where it also has an entrance), eight nearby houses had to be demolished, as well as the little Greek church built in 1797-1799 that had heretofore served as a cathedral.[2][3]
Work, coordinated by city architect Iosif Schussnig, began in 1902 and was finished in 1904, when the copper roof was done. The plan, by Virgil Nagy and Iosif Kamner of Budapest, was chosen from among designs submitted by 31 mainly Austrian and Hungarian architects. On 13 December 1904, the four bells were blessed and placed in the two main spires (during World War I, the Austro-Hungarian Army melted the three bells in the western spire for use as cannons; these were not replaced until 1926).[1] The iconostasis and kliros were then manufactured at Constantin Babic's firm in Bucharest; electric lighting was also installed. The iconostasis (of gilt carved wood) and dome (showing Christ Pantocrator flanked by angels) were painted by Octavian Smigelschi, from the nearby village of Ludoș.[2]
The exterior is in red and yellow brick. The spacious nave is bordered by smaller spherical roofs and four towers: two smaller octagonal ones, and two larger ones near the entrance with a square base that becomes octagonal in the bell area. The ends of the towers are shaped like double bulbs, with a skylight in the centre. The main entrance is through a portico with three semicircular doors. Behind this and between the main towers is an ample semicircular vestibule with a similarly-shaped stained-glass window, while the outside is decorated with round mosaics showing Jesus and the Four Evangelists.[2] The cathedral is 53.10m long and 25.40m wide in the centre, the dome 24.70m high (34.70m on the exterior) and 15m in diameter, while the spires are 43m high (45m including the crosses).[1]
On 30 April 1906, Metropolitan Meţianu, joined by his suffragan bishop from Arad, Ioan Papp, and a group of priests and deacons, consecrated the cathedral. Nicolae Iorga was also present; he donated a silver engolpion and a valuable icon. Since its dedication, the cathedral has undergone a number of restorations and improvements: the walls have been decorated with neo-Byzantine paintings by Iosif Keber and Anastasie Demian, and liturgical objects, vestments, books and a sound system have all been added. Divine Liturgy and Vespers take place daily, as well as other services when provided for.

SIGHISOARA : TRANSYLVANIA ROAD TRIP PART 3 | ROMANIA
Sighisoara was our third stop in our Transylvania Road Trip. It is very rich in history and has an amazing architecture. This medieval city has a very charming appeal. Not to mention that it was the birth place of the original Dracula (Vlad Tepes). Our most favorite site here is the main square (citadel) itself. People watching, eating ice cream, drinking coffee, checking out restaurants, taking lots of photos as it is so photogenic and just simply resting under the tree are few of our favorite activities here. We are 100% recommending for you guys to visit this place.

The Church is heaven on earth (Fr. Ghelasie)
Fr. Ghelasie Tepes talks about Church as being heaven on earth, a place adorned with martyrs' sacrifice. Fr. Ghelasie is the abbot of Sighisoara Monastery in Transylvania, Romania and a disciple of Fr. Arsenie Boca.
Video source (2018):
Fr. Ghelasie:
Don't you rejoice to receive communion, the Body and Blood of our Lord?
You jump for joy, sometimes you feel like detaching yourself from the earth... And often you don't even know if you're still on earth... As the Father said:The church is heaven on earth...
Well, how can it not be heaven if the One from heaven comes here on the holy table...
Look, the church is adorned with icons, with saints... with the Holy Trinity, with the Mother of God, with St. John the Baptist and with all the saints... and down here on earth, it is adorned with us, with people, do you see?
Each of us with our wounds...
Look, the saints on the walls, they have those halos above their head, that is their sacrifice, that is why their heads shine so beautifully, because to one they cut his hand, to another one the head, to another one they removed his eyes, to another one they cut his tongue, and so on, another one was burned at the stake, another was stabbed, only God knows the pain of each one of them...
Do you see how beautifully they are adorned? But in reality they suffered... Do you see? And we are full of wounds as well, don't think that we are not... And who is the first to hurt you? Your eyes, your ears, your tongue... isn't it? These hurt us a lot...

Biserica veche de lemn din BÂRSANA - The Old Wooden Church (Maramures, Romania)
Please enable English subtitle !
Shaded somewhat by the greatness of the new Barsana Monastery (with which there is no confusion), the old church in Barsana is an important historical monument belonging to the group of eight old wooden churches of Maramures entered into the UNESCO patrimony. The old wooden church in Barsana is remarkable because it has been moved twice and differs from other Maramures churches through painting, decors and furniture with Baroque and Rococo influences. The old church's history is a bit confused, however it was built in 1711, it was moved approximately in 1739 to become the church of the former (!) Barsana Monastery (recently rebuilt), and after it was disbanded following the Uniation (the forced conversion to Greek- Catholicism) in order to be saved, the church is moved in 1795 in the current location, in the village's perimeter, on Jbar Hill, in a cemetery of the plague buried in rush, not in a Christian manner. The church is made of oak beams, it has smaller dimensions and the architecture is common for the Maramures churches: a roof with two eaves, a bell tower above the narthex, provided with a gazebo and a sharp spire. It was re-paited in 1806 (after the second moving) by local craftsman Toader Hodor, a painting with dynamic elements and ornaments with Baroque and Rococo influences, unusual for the post-Byzantine painting of those times. The painting is better preserved in the nave and altar. In the nave there is the double row of paintings, the first with Genesis and the second with the Passion of Jesus, thus creating remarkable moralizing discourse through the contrast of life in Heaven and the passions endured by the Savior to save the world on the path of perdition. The canopy of the nave is dominated by the stage of the Ascension of St. Elias with the chariot drawn by winged horses. The vault of the altar is dominated by a Western theme, namely The Coronation of the Virgin by the Holy Trinity, referring to the patron of the church The Entry of the Most Holy Mother of God into the Temple.

Sinaia Monastery: The New Church
Under the leadership of Hegumens Ioasaf and Paisie, construction of The New Church began in 1842 using funds allocated by the monastery and was completed in 1846. This smaller structure was enlarged by the Board of Civil Hospitals during a period from 1897 to 1903. These efforts gave the building the appearance it has today. Created by architect George Mandrea, the structure utilizes the Moldavian style and the Brâncovenesc style from Walachia. It is said that the belt of three green enamel lines that encircle the building represent the unity of the Holy Trinity in one God and the unity of the Three Romanian Kingdoms in one country. Thanks to the efforts of King Carol I, the Great Church of the monastery has become the first church to use electric lights in Romania
