Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc (UNESCO/NHK)
This memorial column, erected in the early years of the 18th century, is the most outstanding example of a type of monument specific to central Europe. In the characteristic regional style known as Olomouc Baroque and rising to a height of 35 m, it is decorated with many fine religious sculptures, the work of the distinguished Moravian artist Ondrej Zahner.

The Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc is probably the smallest UNESCO World Heritage site we've visited so far! It's a plague column, approx 35 metres tall, built in the 18th century as a memorial for local plague victims, and to celebrate local saints and craftsmen. It was also controversial because among the saints was included a non-saint, John Sarkander, though the problem was eventually rectified when he was canonised in the late 20th century.

My first night in the Czech Republic after spending a great week in Budapest (wish I had filmed there!). Olomouc is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic so it's pretty small. Very cute and lovely though.

The Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc is a magnificent Baroque monument built in 17161754.
The main purpose was a spectacular celebration of Catholic Church and faith, partly caused by feeling of gratitude for ending a plague, which struck Moravia between 1714 and 1716.
This monument was the work of several artists. The first to die during the work was Wenzel Render, a monumental mason and privileged imperial architect. He came first with the idea to build the column, enforced his will upon the city council, designed it, built the first stage and helped to finance it. His followers Franz Thoneck, Johann Wenzel Rokický and Augustin Scholtz also did not live long enough to see the column finished; it was completed by Johann Ignaz Rokický. The splendid sculptural decoration was started by Phillip Sattler. After his death Andreas Zahner continued and made 18 sculptures and 9 reliefs in 7 years before he died as well. Goldsmith Simon Forstner, who made gilded copper sculptures of the Holy Trinity and of the Assumption of the Virgin, was somewhat luckier and managed to finish his brilliant work. However he lost his health when working on the sculptures and using toxic mercury compounds during the gilding process.
After the Holy Trinity Column was finished in 1754, it became a source of great pride for Olomouc, since all people participating in its creation were citizens of the town. The column was consecrated in a great celebration attended by Empress Maria Theresa and her husband Francis I.
Only four years later, when Olomouc was besieged by a Prussian army and the Holy Trinity Column was hit by shots from Prussian cannons several times, Olomouc citizens went bravely in a procession to beg the Prussian general not to shoot at this sacred monument. General James Keith complied with their wishes. The column was repaired soon after the war and a replica of a stone shot was half-buried in its stem on the place where it was hit to remind people of this event.
The column is dominated by gilded copper sculptures of the Holy Trinity accompanied by the Archangel Gabriel on the top and the Assumption of the Virgin beneath it.
The base of the column, in three levels, is surrounded by 18 more stone sculptures of saints and 14 reliefs in elaborate cartouches. At the uppermost stage are saints connected with Jesus earth life his mothers parents St. Anne and St. Joachim, his foster-father St. Joseph, and St. John the Baptist, who was preparing his coming who are accompanied by St. Lawrence and St. Jerome, saints to whom the chapel in the Olomouc town hall was dedicated. Three reliefs represent the Three theological virtues Faith, Hope, and Love.
Below them, the second stage is dedicated to Moravian saints St. Cyril and St. Methodius (Czech Metoděj), who came to Great Moravia to spread Christianity in 863 (St. Methodius became Moravian Archbishop), St. Blaise, in whose name one of the main Olomouc churches is consecrated, and patrons of neighbouring Bohemia St. Adalbert of Prague (Czech Vojtěch) and St. John of Nepomuk (Czech Jan Nepomucký), whose cult was very strong here as well.
In the lowest stage one can see the figures of an Austrian patron St. Maurice and a Bohemian patron St. Wenceslas (Czech Václav), in whose names two important Olomouc churches were consecrated, another Austrian patron St. Florian, who was also viewed as a protector against various disasters, especially fire, St. John of Capistrano (Czech Jan Kapistránský), who used to preach in Olomouc, St. Anthony of Padua, a member of the Franciscan Order, which owned an important monastery in Olomouc, and St. Aloysius Gonzaga, a patron of students. His sculpture showed that Olomouc was very proud of its university.
Reliefs of all twelve apostles are placed among these sculptures.
The last missing in this list of saints is St. John Sarkander (Czech Jan Sarkander), whose statue (holding a lily as a symbol of purity) is on the second stage. John Sarkander was a priest who was tortured to death in Olomouc prison in the beginning of the Thirty Years' War, because he, as the legend says, refused to break the seal of confession. Decision to place him here was very extraordinary and violated the tradition, since Sarkander had not been canonized and not even beatified in that time yet, which could have resulted in problems with the Holy See. However, his cult of a martyr was so strong here that the craftsmen decided to take the risk. Sarkander was beatified in 1859 and canonized in 1995 on the occasion of the visit of Pope John Paul II in Olomouc.

Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc
Marian columns are religious monuments built in honour of the Virgin Mary, often in thanksgiving for the ending of a plague or for some other help. The purpose of the Holy Trinity columns was usually simply to celebrate the church and the faith. However, the plague motif could sometimes play its role in their erection as well. Erecting religious monuments in the form of a column surmounted by a figure or a Christian symbol was a gesture of public faith that flourished in the Catholic countries of Europe especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. Thus they became one of the most visible features of Baroque architecture. This usage also influenced some Eastern Orthodox Baroque architecture.

Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc
Sloup Nejsvětější Trojice v Olomouci
Čestný sloup Nejsvětější Trojice mluví beze slov, ale velmi výrazně k obyvatelům Olomouce i k jejím návštěvníkům. Mluví svou vysokou uměleckou krásou; hovoří jako historická památka a svědek minulých časů; vypráví o tom, čeho je znamením
a symbolem -- o Nejsvětější Trojici, tajemstvích víry, Panně Marii a svatých.
V Olomouci na Horním náměstí stojí Čestný sloup Nejsvětější Trojice. Tvůrcem sloupu je císařsky privilegovaný kameník, sochař Václav Render (1669 -- 1733), který jej navrhl a budoval až do své smrti.
Uvnitř sloupu je kaple Nejsvětější Trojice s reliéfy Filipa Sattlera. Čestný sloup je jediný známý sloup mající uvnitř kapli. Václav Render se rozhodl k postavení sloupu Nejsvětější Trojice na vlastní náklady pod tlakem zoufalé situace města. Po třicetileté válce
(1618 -- 1648) měla být Olomouc srovnána se zemí, ale
nedošlo k tomu. V té době v Olomouci z původních
30 000 zůstalo pouze 1 700 obyvatel. Olomouc se začala postupně vzmáhat, ale pouze do roku 1709, kdy velký požár zničil čtyři pětiny domů. V letech 1713 až 1715 sužoval místní obyvatele mor a po něm v Olomouci zůstalo pouhých 1 500 obyvatel.
Václav Render chtěl Olomoučanům vlít božské ctnosti, víru, naději, lásku, a trvalým svědectvím katolické víry přesvědčení, že má smysl královské město budovat znovu na křesťanských kořenech.
Věděl, že se po celé Evropě staví čestné sloupy díkůvzdání Bohu a také mariánské morové sloupy. Dále věděl, že podle výšky sloupu se posuzuje význam města, v němž je sloup zbudován. Chtěl, aby biskupské město a zároveň hlavní město Moravy prezentovalo svůj význam. Tento svůj záměr dokonale naplnil, sloup je od roku 2000 zapsán do světového kulturního dědictví UNESCO.

Olomouc provides the perfect antidote to trendy, crowded Prague. Just two hours away from Prague by express train, Olomouc makes a fine daytrip or spend your entire trip in Olomouc. Olomouc is after Prague the largest urban conservation area in the Czech Republic, and features among others a UNESCO World Heritage site the Holy Trinity Column.

Tonight we walk in Olomouc / Czech Republic which has a large old town. In fact it's the 2nd largest historic preservation zone of the country after Prague.
We start the tour on a square in the old town at the Marian Column. There are several fountains here like the Jupiter Fountain and Neptune Fountain. The city of Olomouc is known for six stone baroque fountains. On our way to the Upper Square we also see the bronce Arion Fountain with a modern design though based on an ancient legend.
The Holy Trinity Column is one of the main sights of Olomouc which we will see a few times again on this walk. The city hall is currently under renovation so we walk around the side streets and passages while it is getting darker. Fewer people are on the street now. We make it to the northern area and outside the old town and see a few churches. We often return to the upper square before we end the walk right were we started.
