Holy Triniti monastery (Agia Triada), Meteora, Greece
Agia Triada - Holy Trinity Monastery, Meteora, Greece 2000
The Holy Trinity Monastery (Greek Μονή Αγίας Τριάδος) (also known as Agia Triada, Ayías Triádhos, Ayia Triada; all meaning Holy Trinity) is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in central Greece, situated in the Peneas Valley northeast of the town of Kalambaka. It is situated at the top of a rocky precipice over 400 metres high and forms part of 24 monasteries which were originally built at Meteora, one of the oldest still existing of the Meteora monasteries
The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, pronounced [mɛˈtɛoɾɐ], literally middle of the sky, suspended in the air or in the heavens above — etymologically related to meteorology) is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka. The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List

Chania Tour - visiting the Monastery of Agia Triada in Crete, Greece (Friday, October 11th 2013)
Website:
CHANIA Port of Call for Navigator of the Seas cruise ship docked in Souda Bay actually - in sunny Crete, Greece
Friday morning (October 11, 2013), we had a TAXI waiting for us in Souda Bay -- pre-scheduled for a day tour (at 30 EURO/hour standard rate). Mano was our driver for the day!
First STOP -- enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and views of our RCI cruise ship from the Souda Bay War Cemetery (British Commonwealth War Cemetery) -- located approximately 5 km east from the center of Chania (Xania).
Next STOP --
The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) -- or Tzagarolon Monastery as it is also known -- is one of the most impressive monasteries you will see in Crete.
The Monastery of Agia Triada is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, north of Chania Prefecture.
It is 15 kilometres from Chania; close to the equally famous Monastery of Gouverneto.
Once again, we were the first to arrive (before the large tour bus caught up to us as their passengers did when we were leaving the Suda Bay Cemetery earlier that Friday morning).
As soon as you enter the gate, you will see the wells and stairs adorned with bougainvillea, oleander and other seasonal flowers, adding a lovely accent to the complex.
This may be one of the few Cretan monasteries where the inner courtyard is so beautiful and well cared for.
The west wing of the monastery is a three-story building and includes vaulted storerooms where the wine and olive oil were once kept, while most of the courtyard is taken up by a large cistern which was used to collect rainwater from the surrounding buildings.
The Monastery of Agia Triada has a distinctive façade with Doric columns, but the elements of Renaissance architecture reminded us that the monastery was built by the Cretan monks Ieremias and Lavrentios (of the Venetian Orthodox Tzagarolos family).
By Orthodox Church tradition, the Patriarch has the right, when a monastery is founded in his jurisdiction, to send a cross which is placed in the foundations and establishes its direct dependence on him.
Monastery of Agia Triada opening hours:
8 a.m. to sunset
Winter :8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then 4 p.m. to sunset
Gentle REMINDER:
Please make sure you are decently dressed when visiting the monastery.
The Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon was built in 1634, on the site of a small church dedicated to the Holy Apostles.
The monastery supports schools in Chania, and a seminary has operated within the monastery itself since 1892.
We visited the monastery church and complex and then wandered round the area for a while.
NOT to be missed -- the large exhibition of woodcarvings and icons in the monastery's Museum.
Inside the complex there was an olive press and a cellar for the wine produced by the monastery, while on the south side is the monastery library, formerly the Abbot's Room.
In recent years the Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon has developed the systematic cultivation of organic vines and olives, and produces excellent wine, tsikoudia (raki), olive oil, honey, vinegar and olive oil soap.
The monastery produces 20 tonnes of organic virgin olive oil per year. It has won international prizes and is mainly sold abroad.
The following wines are produced: dry red Cabernet, dry red Fokiano Romeiko, dry red Merlot, dry white Trebiano
Naturally, all the products of Agia Triada are available for sale from the monastery shop.
We find the Monastery to be a lovely, peaceful and pretty impressive place - certainly worth a visit!

Akrotiri Agia Triada Monastary and Sternes 1961
Akrotiri Sternes 1961
This video takes place in what appears to be Akrotiri, Crete, Greece, which is a peninsula outside of the city of Chania.
I am advised that this scene takes place at the monastery of the Holy Trinity in Akrotiri. There is a celebration there, which I would love to learn more about.
Towards the end the movie moves on to Sternes at the home of Kosta Verganelakis.
Early in the video, Themistocle Tsouchlarakis is featured with his family and friends, as well as the sichorosmenos Antonis Panagirakis who is the dancing Chorofilaka.
Beyond these few faces, I don't know anyone else in the video. I would love to hear your comments and hear from you if you recognize anyone, the villages, the reason for the get-together, and anything else that you would like to share.
Because I noticed a female lyratzida, I selected the music of Tasoula to serenade you while you watch this movie clip.

Agia Triada (Holy Trilogy) Monastery, Crete.wmv
This footage is of the Aghia Triada (Holy Trilogy) monastery. It provides me with all my organic extra virgin olive oil. It is also the olive oil I also use at my Greekalicious cooking school. It is in Chania, Crete. I feel truly privileged to have discovered them by accident the year before when I went off the main road and was lost. I stumbled accross the monastery and the monks guided me. Thank you to the Minoan civilization for introducing us to olive oil.
Agia Triada Monastery, Chania region
One of the most beautiful monasteries of Crete. Built in the 16th century, it still keeps its original design and architecture. What makes it different from the rest of the monasteries is the golden colour of the building stones that keep their original brightness and colour despite the 400 years that have passed since its construction. Next to the monastery, the visitor can see the monastery's winery and the small museum of winery materials.

Chania Crete - Agia Triada Monastery and Wine Cellar - Just My Type of Monastery
The Agia Triada Monastery of Chania Crete is really something special. It's large and one of the most famous monasteries of Crete and it is still highly active, as many locals gather there for mass - as they did on this day that I visited.
Built over three hundred years ago, the Byzantine architecture is impressive for both the main building and the two smaller chapels that make up the grounds of the Holy Trinity monastery, but there's something else about this historical, yet modern site that I love - it has its own wine cellar! Nice.
Fresh, homemade wine and olive oil are available at the shop that adjoins the monastery, and a quick tour of the place will bring you to a bar area - where there was wine tasting going on that day - and to the wine cellar, with barrels of wine sitting there fermenting waiting to be poured into VFC's wine glass, where it would quickly exit into VFC's belly.
Along the hallway are historical tools used for the trade of crushing grapes and turning them all into that beautiful drink that gives us so much pleasure.
Enjoy the quick tour through the Agia Triada monastery of Chania Crete and don't forget ---

Hagia Triada (also Ayia Triada, Agia Triada, Agia Trias, Greek: [ˈaʝa triˈaða] — Holy Trinity) is the archaeological site of an ancient Minoan settlement. Hagia Triada is situated on the western end of a prominent coastal ridge, with Phaistos at the eastern end and the Mesara Plain below.
Hagia Triada has yielded more Linear A tablets than any other Minoan site. Important finds include the Hagia Triada sarcophagus, the Chieftain's Cup, the Boxer Vase, and the Harvester Vase.

Wandering around the very pretty, and rustic, monastery of Agios Triados, located at Akrotiri, Chania, Crete. Lots of lovely Mediterranean architecture, if you're a sketcher be sure to take your brushes, and if you're a wine lover, be sure to check out the gift shop where a homebrew can be sampled and purchased!
