Metropolitan Onufry of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna was elected new Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in Kiev on Wednesday.
The Council of Bishops gathered in the refectory of the Church of Saint Anthony and Theodosiu in Kiev-Pechersk Lavra to elect the new Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The election among the 74 acting bishops was held in secret and in two rounds. Onufry has also received the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow.
Metropolitan Onufry replaced Metropolitan Vladimir are he passed away on July 5. The The 69-year-old Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church will be enthroned in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra on August 17.

An ancient church in Transcarpathia is in danger
One of the architectural pearls of Transcarpathia is threatened at the moment. An exclusive wooden church of the 17th century has been a tourist attraction of Novoselitsa village for 50 years now. The church building is an active museum and the village residents are incredibly proud they’ve been able to preserve for so long the most valuable artifact that catches an eye of fastidious travelers. However, an arbitrary decision of the village council head to transfer the church to a small Greek-Catholic community can pose an existential threat for the museum complex.

I was told people want to pray here. But I am dead set against it. Firstly, the church here is very small. It was built without any nails. This is the smallest church in Ukraine with such mural painting.

Architecture should be for tourists, for them to come and watch how our ancestors and great grandfathers used to build it. You know, this is the 17th century and not a single nail was used in the building. That is why tourists visit this place, they leave their comments which tell how much they like it here.
I am totally against making this church active. Furthermore, we have no congregation here. All in all there are 7 people whom I gave the entrance door keys because I did not want to have an argument with them. Almost every Sunday I come here to check how many people have gathered. No more than seven.
The Greek-Catholic congregation numbers about 7 persons – namely they can now dispose of the church with the original mural painting. Yet the issue of security measures did not become primary for the community. They entered the church for the first time on Easter – with food baskets and burning candles.
I’d like to draw your attention to this crucifixion. As I have already told, our church was built in the 17th century. But if take a closer look at this crucifixion, it is clear the church was built as Orthodox.
The second visit of the church took place on May 15, when 30 vans with the residents from neighbor villages of the district and region came allegedly to the church service.
They gathered plenty of people. It looked like a real show. The people could not understand what they had to do, what church they have to go to.
They filled the yard of the museum complex, waving a piece of paper, which had been purportedly issued in Kiev! Actually, what the document was and whether it was a document altogether remained vague for both the deputies and the villagers.
I neither held the documents nor saw them. I just saw the decision of Novoselitsa village council.

St. John the Russian Church is located in the village of Prokopi, about 50 km northwest of Chalkida. The church houses the intact remains of the saint, and are the pride of the island. St. John was a soldier in Peter the Great's army. He was captured and taken to Constantinople and then to Prokopi where he endured inhumane torture. His own torturers proclamed him a saint. On May 27th, pilgrims from around the world trek from either the capital or from Limni to pay homage to the saint.

Bunchenskiy men's monastery

Lviv (Ukrainian: Львів,) the largest city in western Ukraine and the seventh largest city in the country overall, is one of the main cultural centres of Ukraine. Named in honor of the Leo, the eldest son of Rus' King Daniel of Galicia. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia (also called Kingdom of Rus')from 1272 to 1349 when was conquered by King Casimir III the Great who then became known as the King of Poland and Rus'. From 1434, it was the regional capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship in the Kingdom of Poland, then renamed Lemberg in 1772 as the capital of the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. In 1918 in a short time was the capital of the West Ukrainian People's Republic. Between the wars, the city was known as Lwów and was the centre of the Lwów Voivodeship in the Second Polish Republic. After the Second World War, it became part of the Soviet Union (Ukrainian SSR) and in 1991 of independent Ukraine. Administratively, Lviv serves as the administrative center of Lviv Oblast and has the status of city of oblast significance. Its population is 728,350 (2016 est.)Lviv was the centre of the historical region of Galicia. The historical heart of the city, with its old buildings and cobblestone streets, survived Soviet and German occupations during the Second World War largely unscathed. The city has many industries and institutions of higher education such as Lviv University and Lviv Polytechnic. Lviv is also a home to many world-class cultural institutions, including a philharmonic orchestra and the famous Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet. The historic city centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Lviv celebrated its 750th anniversary with a son et lumière in the city centre in September 2006.
Due to the rich cultural programme, developed infrastructure (now Lviv has more than 8 000 hotel rooms, over 700 cafes and restaurants, free WI-Fi zones in the city centre, good connection with many countries of the world) Lviv is considered one of Ukraine's major tourist destinations.The city had a 40% increase in tourists in the early 2010s; the highest rate in Europe.

Skyniya Zlataya, Kovchezhe Zavita, vydiashche dnes Mladentsa, Syna povyta / Golden Tabernacle, Arc of the Covenant seeing today the Baby, greeted the Son: Rejoice Mary, rejoice All-Virgin about the Birth of Your Son. Ukrainian Christmas carol. This song though is in Ukrainian, has some old Church-Slavic vocabulary inbetween. Seems to be very old church carol, as text hasnt been updated to the modern language. I found only 2 versions / recordings of this carol. The other recording will share later sometime.
PS.: This amazing and unique sculpture featuring Mary and Arc of the Covenant (the rare depiction carries deep theological meaning) is from Catholic Church of Stanislaw Kostka in Chicago, USA Stanislaw Kostka was Polish Jesuit saint from Cracow, who died as a young boy and whose body stayed incorrupt after death, illuminating supernatural bluish lights! This story is described in the book Incorruptables by Joan Cruz. St. Stanislaw Kostka was a patron saint of prewar Lviv (Lwow), population of which was some 60 % Polish up to late 40s (when all Poles of Lviv were deported mainly to Wroclaw, former German city that became Polish at that moment). Image of Stanislaw Kostka was on City Hall Tower of Lviv (not sure if its still there).
Though local west Ukrainians comprised some 14-20 % of urban population of prewar Lviv (Lviv was Polish island in west Ukrainian sea, as the surrounding East Galicia was nearly entirely Ukrainian - Poles were only urban dwellers, just as Russians are in east Ukrainian cities but not in villages), after the deportation of its Polish inhabitants, city was populated by villagers (30%) from Lviv province (Ukrainian Greek-Catholics), Ukrainian immigrants from central and eastern Ukraine (central Orthodox Ukrainians, other 40 %) and once ruling Soviet Russian class & military - ethnic Russians, some 20 % (now they got Ukrainianized, as city is nearly exclusively Ukrainian speaking). So today city is 52 % Ukrainian Orthodox, 48 % Ukrainian Greek-Catholic. While the surrounding th entire Lviv province is nearly totally Ukrainian Greek-Catholic. So there is a hidden difference between Lviv and Lviv privince in terms of demographics / religion. Though western Ukrainian population is more or less homogeneous (even if one take Volyn, Rivne & Chernivtsi regions that are Orthodox in difference to Lviv, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions that are mainly Greek-Catholic) due to the dominance of same Ukrainian language / same linguistic culture & national identity. March 2011 update
Alright friends spring is almost here and I want to share with you a quick update about our family and ministry. First of all I want to share with you about Good Soil: that is the evangelism and discipleship seminars that we have been doing since September. We've had two seminars already this year: one in Kiev, Ukraine and the other in Kremunchug, central Ukraine and our next seminar is planned for this weekend, so please pray.
Friday and Saturday in our home church, I'll be helping to lead that seminar. Also pray that we have more guys who can lead these seminars because one of the problems is that we just don't have enough trained men to teach these seminars. The demand is more than we can meet right now, which I guess is a good thing, Praise the Lord!
Another thing we can praise the Lord for is that we had a great missions class here recently at our international training center with 23 students and 4 professors. They were doing all kinds of cross cultural things, dressing up and trying different traditions. This was a prerequisite for these students who want to go on a cross cultural missions trip this summer. They will be going from Ukraine to Moldova and working with a church there to do some evangelism. Please pray for these students especially those going this summer to Moldova that the Lord would use them. It is exciting to see them get excited to do missions, these are Ukrainians doing missions!
Also pray for Christina, march 26th she is going to be speaking at a South Ukraine Women's conference, there will be around 150 women there. She will be speaking on the topic Fellowship with God. I know she would appreciate your prayers as she prepares and for the women who will be coming to that conference.
This evening I am starting something new at our church. I am going to be doing five lessons on preaching. The church has asked me to do this. We have about 15 guys who preach in our church so pray for me as I teach these guys how to preach so that they can effectively and accurately teach God's Word to God's people. I am pretty excited about that.
Finally, I know I asked for this before but continue to pray for our pastor, Pastor Peter. I visited him last week up in the hospital in Kiev. He is very weak, he has not been able to eat much but he has found some doctors who think they can operate on the tumor. However, first they need to get his strength up so they are giving him food through IV and maybe by the end of this week he will be strong enough for the surgery, so pray for him, pray for the doctors, pray for Peter and his family!

Update: Floods in Western Ukraine
The Ukrainian News Agency reported that from July 23 to July 26,2008 rescuers evacuated 6,105,000 and resettled 13,703,000 people in Ivano-Frankivsk, L'viv, Ternopil, Zakarpatia and Chernivtsi flooded regions. More than 20 people died. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko estimates losses from floods in these regions will be more than 4 billion hryvnias ($1 = UAH 4.85). Tymoshenko noted that for covering such losses from the Budget-2008, it is necessary that Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament) make amendments to the main financial document. VR Chairman Arseniy Yatseniuk has called VR into a special session.
The Ukrainian American community and other communities in Canada, are saddened by the news of this unprecedented calamity. Historically, the largest number of Ukrainian immigrants came to North America from the area now devastated by the flood.
