Sculptures : Homage To Newton by Salvador Dalí / Bird, 1990 by Fernando Botero @ UOB Plaza Singapore
Art Sculptures : Homage To Newton (Salvador Dali) and Bird (Fernando Botero) at UOB Plaza. There two bronze sculptures on the ground floor, one in the UOB Plaza Two atrium also called city room which is designed by Salvador Dalí ('Homage To Newton') and the other a bird, designed by Fernando Botero, located outside the building . UOB Plaza consist of two late-modernist skyscrapers in the city of Singapore. The complex has two towers, namely UOB Plaza One and UOB Plaza Two. UOB Plaza One is a 280-metre tall building with 67 floors, and was completed in 1992. It is the headquarters of the United Overseas Bank and major financial corporations such as UBS. UOB Plaza Two is a 162-metre tall building with 38 floors and was completed in 1973 with the building reconstructed again in 1995.
Homage to Newton, 1985
Artist: Salvador Dalí
The sculpture is semi abstract, but we can still see that it is a sculpture of a man with a ball falling from its right hand, and it suggests Sir Isaac Newton discovering one of the most fundamental and important physical law. Dali has created a sculpture that looks realistic, yet does not depict reality. He has also made people ponder over his artwork. The sculpture appears solid and heavy, yet there are two open voids. The torso of the figure and the head of the figure have been opened up. Open spaces in the figure's head and torso symbolize an open mind and heart—two characteristics the artist felt were necessary to achieve Newton's revelation and all human endeavours.
Bird, 1990
Artist: Fernando Botero
The Colombian artist is known for his endearingly rotund figures, and this piece is typical of his style. His paintings and sculptures are, on first examination, noted for their exaggerated proportions and the fatness of the human figures and animal figures. Although Botero's Big Bird is unrealistic, for no bird will ever be so fat, one can easily tell that it is a bird. There is a quality of humor in the piece of sculpture. Although the sculpture is appears big and round, like a ball, it appears to be quite light and hollow, perhaps because of the light hearted ideas it represents. it is Botero's style to represent objects and figures by fattening them. He said An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it.

In the 17th century, Sir Isaac Newton discovered the law of gravity. Legend tells us that origin of this most important and fundamental physical law was initiated by the falling of an apple, represented in the present work by the ball falling from the right hand. Salvador Dali, one of the most important surrealist artists, takes the liberty to go even further in paying homage to Newton by opening up the torso of the figure and suspending the heart to indicate open-heartedness . The open head represents an open-mind. These are two necessary qualities for the discovery of important natural laws as well as for success of all human endeavours.

Bronze Sculpture : Progress and Advancement @ Raffles Place Singapore
This Bronze sculpture artwork Progress and Advancement is installed at north end of Raffles Place near UOB building 1, Raffles Place (formerly OUB Centre). It is done by Yu Yu Yang (aka Yang Ying-Feng), 1988 and was commissioned and presented by late Lien Ying Chow on 8th August 1988.
About the artist Yang Ying-Feng
Yu Yu Yang (aka Yang Ying Feng) produced many realistic sculptures in the 1940s and 50s, but the realistic figures and reliefs at the bottom of this work look like his first return to such realism in many years. Yu Yu Yang was born in 1920, in Taiwan. His family moved to Beijing to work in the film business, and he spent his seconday school years under the Japanese occupation. He went to Japan to study art, but returned to Beijing without finishing his degree after the bombing of Tokyo. In later years he returned to Taiwan (the biographies gloss over the exact circumstances here). After some years in Rome, he set up a studio in Tailuge, on the east coast of Taiwan. In the 1980s he participated in the planning of Beijing's Pingtai district. In 1983, he drew up plans for a Space & Technology Art Centre in Singapore.

It was a work commissioned by the Housing Development Board for the then HDB headquarters in Bukit Merah, Singapore.
Ng Eng Teng, known as the grandfather of Singapore Sculpture, was a sculptor in Singapore known for his figurative sculptures. His training was in painting and pottery and in recognition of his excellent artistic achievements, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 1981. Ng Eng Teng's first sculptures were terracotta figurines which he fired in 1959 at the Jurong Brickworks and the now-defunct Alexandra Brickworks when he was still a student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Travel vlog43-Keep Calm and Take Walks by the Singapore River
A stroll towards the waterway called the Singapore River opens up a beautiful scenery of a successful river cleanup that was started in the 70s. It's vibrant with street art and sculptural art like the massive Botero sculpture titled Bird. Fernando Botero, a Colombian painter-sculptor created it. A stone's throw away is Salvador Dali's sculpture Homage to Newton (I linked my vlog of Dali's scuplture on the video and below.) Clarke Quay is full of specialty restaurants, cafes and visual delights. Boat Quay is full of restaurants and liquor bars where you can watch refurbished tongkangs or the boats of yore turned river cruise vessels plying the clean river. Apart from tourists, students and office types, the river attracts exercise enthusiasts regularly. It's a very pleasant place to relax.
There's more to this river scene, I'll be putting up the night scene at the waterway next. Comment, like or subscribe to see more. Thank you.
