Odysseus Palace (Homer school - Ithaca)
Homeric place on beautiful island. I am standing on most likely a place where main court was, where Odysseus slain suitors. Opening scene is recently excavated stairs cut in bedrock leading to upper chambers (Penelopes room?).Next to it are remains of stairs made of slabs, displaced by myriad of earthquakes which hits the region from late bronze age. They probably lead to main entrance or magazine rooms.I will later descend trough it. Panning to the left in a distance are remains of unknown chambers.
Wars, quakes, rains and human habitation have ruined the site beyond recognition. Yet, there is some poetry which can be feel on this place which whispers that Odysseus palace is finally revealed.

Ride to School of Homer Archaeological Site, Ithaca Island
This is an archaeological site on the island of Ithaca, Greece. It is located near the village of Stavros on the island. The site is in disrepair as you can see and it is quite difficult to find. You can get directions from the little museum in Stavros. This island is a great ride and the history is fascinating stuff. I'm riding a Suzuki V-Strom 650cc bike. Odysseus in Ithaca
Odysseus moors his boat in an alien architectural machine, a labyrinth with echoes of De Chirico and Escher- a place of mystery and power where the rules of visual perspective are transformed and another space erupts.
The School of Homer in Ithaca in winter
This video shows the School of Homer in Ithaca in winter. Of particular interest are the wells and springs. The springs are dry at the top of the slope and rocks, yet the Mycenaean-looking spring at the bottom is full. Also, 100 metres down the road from the School water begins seeping to the surface, forming little streams which run in the direction of Melanhydros, another spring 200 metres away. See also the video Melanhydros spring, Ithaca, in winter.

A short archaeological documentary by Yiannis Arsenis
Be a part of the discovery of one of the most important archaeological findings of Mycenaean Era. Help the Archaeological Team of the University of Ioannina in Greece to unearth the ruins of Odysseus Palace on the island of Ithaca.
The excavations at St. Athanasios area in Ithaca has been identified by Greek archaeologists as the palace of Odysseus. The site is believed to be a large Mycenaean palatial building complex occupying two levels. A stairway cut into the solid bedrock of the hill provided easy access to the two levels. Other finds on the site include a funerary enclosure, a large circular structure whose purpose is unknown, several storerooms and workshops, a sophisticated drainage system and an underground cistern. The complex is believed to date to around 1300 BCE.
The excavations are currently on hold owing to a lack of funding from the Greek government.
Here is where all of us are asked to come aboard, by donating whatever amount of money is possible to spare for each one of us.
The money that we will raise will be donated to the University of Ioannina for the specific purpose: The continuation of the archaeological excavations and research of Odysseus Palace on the island of Ithaca.

Φως στην Ομηρική Ιθάκη - Throwing Light on Homer's Ithaca
Today's Ithaca is the Ithaca of the Odyssey and of Homer. The Ithaca of Pre-history and of History.
It can be identified by the location of two places of worship of around 1000 BC, detailed by Homer, and located by painstaking archaeological studies in Ithaca. Namely: The sanctuary of Apollo in Aetos (a shady grove of Apollo, the archer-god, Od. υ 278), and the cave of worship in Poli (pleasant, shadowy cave, sacred to the nymphs, Od. ν 348) an ark of Ithacan inheritance, a sanctuary dedicated to the gods and to Odysseus from 900 BC (tripods, potsherd εὐχὴν Ὀδυσσεῖ = Votive offering to Odysseus, etc.), a place of worship for seafaring travelers of those times.
Throwing Light on Homer's Ithaca is an effort to clarify its historical identity asserting unique evidence and providing a current statement of the Odyssean narrative, to Ithacans, from all over the world, Ithacans of all nations and races as they were vividly described and immortalized by Homeric saga.

Homer's Ithaca Rediscovered
The Discovery
Today's islands of Ithaca and Cephalonia lie to the west of Greece, between Corfu to the north and Zacynthos to the south. Although Ithaca is described as an island in the Odyssey, Homer's Cephallenians are the people who live there in the Iliad:
Odysseus led the gallant Cephallenians,
From Ithaca and leaf-quivering Neriton,
Iliad 2.631-2
When Odysseus makes himself known to King Alcinoos on the island of Scherie (thought to be Corfu) he introduces his homeland with a description that scholars have pondered over for many centuries:
I am Odysseus, Laertes' son, world-famed
For stratagems: my name has reached the heavens.
Bright Ithaca is my home: it has a mountain,
Leaf-quivering Neriton, far visible.
Around are many islands, close to each other,
Doulichion and Same and wooded Zacynthos.
Ithaca itself lies low, furthest to sea
Towards dusk; the rest, apart, face dawn and sun.
Odyssey 9.19-26
However today's island of Ithaca is not low-lying, it is mountainous. It is clearly not the furthest out to sea and it does not face towards dusk (i.e. west), nor do the adjacent islands face towards the dawn and sun (i.e. east). The geographical layout is almost opposite to that described by Homer, so how can his description of ancient Ithaca make any sense? And where are Same and the lost island of Doulichion?
Geology provides a vital clue. The Ionian Islands are located in one of the most tectonically active places in the world, where the African continental plate impacts that of Eurasia. Ten kilometres to the west of Cephalonia the seabed drops from a depth of 300 metres to an incredible 3 kilometres. Every month or so the ground shakes and every few decades there is a major earthquake: the last such event to impact the population was in August 1953.
But can earthquakes change the layout of entire islands? That was the challenge facing the exploration team in 2003. It has taken intensive efforts and the advice of experts from all over the world to answer this question. We now know that the answer is a resounding 'yes'.
