The Homer Tunnel is a 1.2 km (0.75 miles) long road tunnel in the Fiordland region of the South Island of New Zealand, opened in 1954.
New Zealand State Highway 94 passes through the tunnel, linking Milford Sound to Te Anau and Queenstown, by piercing the Darran Mountain range at the Homer Saddle.
It connects between the valley of the Hollyford River to the east and that of the Cleddau to the west.
The tunnel is straight and was originally single-lane and gravel-surfaced.
The tunnel walls remain unlined granite.
The east portal end is at 945 m elevation; the tunnel runs 1270 m at approximately a 1 : 10 gradient down to the western portal.

It was our third day in Queenstown, we planned to visit Milford sound. Milford sound is one of most beautiful and iconic places in New Zealand. It is the wettest place in NZ, and it rains for about 200 days a year.
We got up early and caught the coach at 7am. It tool five and a half hours to get there, on the way the driver stopped by some locations and allowed us to take pictures. The driver is very friendly and provides a lot of information..
On the way to Milford Sound we passed through the Homer Tunnel, a 1.2km-long tunnel through solid rock. Please see the information below (
Just before the Milford Road begins its descent through the Cleddau Valley into Milford Sound, it passes through the Homer Tunnel, a 1.2km-long tunnel through solid rock. Before the tunnel opened in 1954 after 19 years of construction, there was no road access to Milford Sound.
Although the Homer Tunnel is wide enough for a bus and a small vehicle to pass each other, traffic lights operate during the busy summer months to keep it safe. The tunnel is a fairly steep 1:10 gradient running east to west.
The tunnel passes through the Darran mountain range, below the Homer Saddle, and into the Cleddau Valley, 945 metres above sea level. Both the tunnel and saddle are named after William Henry Homer, who discovered the saddle along with George Barber in 1889 while on a surveying expedition. At the time, Homer is said to have suggested that a tunnel under the mountains would be the best way to bring a road to Milford Sound. However, it took many decades before his idea became reality.
The cruise to the Milford sound is one hour and forty five minutes. The weather was raining but because of this, more waterfalls formed so the sight was spectacular. The boat went underneath the waterfall and we got really wet. This was an unforgettable trip to Milford Sound.
The information below is from the website
Situated on the west coast of the South Island, Milford Sound is a fusion of spectacular natural features with amazing visual cues around every corner.'
Described by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world', Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the ice ages. Breathtaking in any weather, the fiord's cliffs rise vertically from the dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and waterfalls cascade downwards from as high as 1000 metres. When it rains in Milford Sound, and it often does, those waterfalls multiply with magnificent effect.
