Hōnaunau, Hawaii - Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park (2018)
Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located on the west coast of the island of Hawaiʻi in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi. The historical park preserves the site where, up until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who broke a kapu (one of the ancient laws) could avoid certain death by fleeing to this place of refuge or puʻuhonua. The offender would be absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle. The grounds just outside the Great Wall that encloses the puʻuhonua were home to several generations of powerful chiefs.

Honaunau Bay aka Two Step
Known for dolphin encounters, this Big Island beach is a local favorite. There aren't much in the way of facilities, this is a fabulous place to snorkel and scuba dive. It is located in South Kona. “Two-steps” refers to a spot on the shoreline where the volcanic rock has been neatly worn away into a convenient “two-step” entry point for snorkelers and divers. Abundant fish and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) can be seen in Honaunau’s warm waters.

Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins 3 feet away at Honaunau on Big Island Hawaii
Commonly referred to as Two Steps, Honaunau often have Hawaiian Spinner dolphins resting in the bay in the early mornings. Between the 23 and 45 second mark these gorgeous dolphins came within 3 feet of me and my GoPro. It was awesome! Snorkeling with dolphins!

Big Island Dive sites - Honaunau
Honaunau Bay is on the South end of the Kona Coast at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau Park. This beautiful cove has epic shore diving! There is a massive reef covered in healthy coral and many fish. Big schools of yellow tangs turn the cove into a golden underwater wave of fish. The reef goes out about 50 yards and drops off to the sand but with a rocky point on each side that has all kinds of beautiful fish, including the rare reticulated butterflyfish. Divers at any experience level will love this site.
Spinner dolphins at Honaunau Bay
After drying off, the dolphins showed up. I swam way out to rendezvous with them, and it turned out to be worth getting wet again.
