NORTHERN WAR PART 2: MY MAN HONE HEKE
More Northern War stuff, this time I discuss the fall of Kororareka and my man Hone Heke.
Waitangi Day: A quick lesson
Now, for a quick history lesson on that historic day which occurred right here at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. To help let's bring up what the scene was like back on February 6, 1840, 179 years ago, British ships anchored out in the bay. A large tent made out of ships' sails was put up on the lawn in front of the house of James Busby the British representative who helped draft the treaty.
It was in this tent 43 chiefs signed the document in the presence of Captain William Hobson the first governor of New Zealand and co-author of the treaty. First to sign influential Ngāpuhi chief Hone Heke (plus 2 more chiefs) who later rebelled against British rule.
As each put their name or moko on the document. Hobson said 'he iwi tahi tātou' meaning 'we are now one people' following that landmark signing. The treaty was taken around the country and by the end of 1840. About 500 others had signed including 13 women. Not all rangatira chiefs signed.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
