in this episode, we took the bus from Kuala Lumpur to George Town, Penang. All I can say is what a nice change of scenery from bustling city chaos to a quaint and charming place. George Town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and it's such a gem to explore and get to know. This was just our first night here, and we got to check out one of the oldest bars (established in the 20s) in George Town, try some yummy noodles, and accidentally ran into the Penang International Food Festival! We have come back to Malaysia to eat some serious street food! Malaysia is a melting pot of different types of food - Malaysian street food, Chinese street food, Indian street food and MORE! We even sample a traditional Sri Lanka style drink that was brought to Penang Malaysia almost 100 years ago, Ais Tingkap is an institution now in Penang, and you can't find this drink anywhere else in the world. We start the day of by sampling a Chinese/Cantonese style street food - dimsum! Next we cool off with the refreshing Sri Lankan street drink - Ais Tingkap. Then, we eat some traditional Chinese street food - rice porridge with braised meats and more. To wash that Chinese food down, we try some street side coconut water, which was super fresh. Finally, we end the day eating some classic Malaysian food - ikan baker (stingray), char kway teow and chicken satay with peanut sauce! What a day!

Six in Penang dead after drinking cheap liquor
Six men in Penang have died after they were believed to have consumed cheap liqour.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Che Zaimani Che Awang said on Monday the victims were two locals, three Myanmar nationals, and another from India, while seven other Myanmar men are currently receiving medical treatment at the Penang Hospital.
Police also raided a shop in Komtar on June 15 and confiscated illegal liquor worth an estimated RM8,000 but did not state if the raid and the deaths were related.

Kuan Yin Teng Chinese Taoist Temple located in George Town - Penang, Malaysia Travel Video
As we randomly wandered around historic George Town we spotted Kuan Yin Teng Taoist Temple and decided to check it out in this travel video from Penang, Malaysia. Known as the Temple of the Goddess of Mercy, it is the oldest (although not the most ornate) temple in all of George Town. Given its historical significance in the city, it is still regarded as the most significant Taoist temple situated along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling street.
Kuan Yin Teng, or Temple of the Goddess of Mercy, is one of the most important temples in Penang. It is officially known as the Kong Hock Keong or Temple of the Hokkien and Cantonese Communities, but that name is largely unpopular among the locals, who know it simply as Kuan Yin Teng.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the temple has to do with its location based principally on feng shui. Kuan Yin Teng, situated on a gentle knoll, is considered the optimal placement for the dragon. With views of both the sea and hills, the temple also has several wells regarded as the 'eye of the dragon.'
Over the years, Kuan Yin Teng temple has undergone numerous renovations, upgrades and repairs; however, it still is the most significant Taoist temple for the Chinese population living on Penang island.
The temple was built by the initial Cantonese and Hokkien settlers in the early 19th century. One can typically witness plenty of worshippers praying and/or burning money made out of paper. When we visited it was atypically quiet though given all of the renovations. In fact, certain areas of the temple were strictly off limits to the general public. To work around this we placed or cameras in between the bars and barriers to still capture some footage or photos of certain aspects of the temple from a distance.
One of the most quirky encounters we had was with a man who decided to dance like a chicken and yell aloud, I'm flying! At first I didn't capture him on camera; however, the second time I walked past him he did his 'chicken dance' once again for me and I was sure to have the camera rolling this time around. I may forget certain details about the temple over time; however, I'll likely forget what this man did.
One thing that struck me about this temple is just how tiny it is. I suppose I'm used to visiting massive temples and expecting to have my mind blown away; however, in relative comparison, this one was quite humble. Although I would put visiting the Clan Jetties or Little India ahead of the experience of wandering around this historic temple, we both still enjoyed checking it out.
For those interested in visiting the temple, it is located on former Lebuh Pitt (now Jin Masjid Kapitan Keling) nearby Little India. If you're staying nearby Chulia street or the Komplex Komptar, it's easy enough to reach on foot:

WELCOME BACK!
Day 6 in Malaysia was a much lighter day.
We start in Melaka where we have pandan pancakes for breakfast at The Daily Fix Cafe, and then board our plane to Penang.
Once we're in Penang, we check into our next hotel - the Eastern & Oriental Hotel! We give you a tour of our room & a few parts of the hotel, and then head into the city to find food.
We eat Nasi Kandar at Line Clear, Rojak and Char Kway Teow from local stalls, and then we end our food tour with DURIAN! You'll have to wait and see what we thought of it. ;)
We finish the night at our GORGEOUS hotel, and rest up for another day of exploring!

UNDER $0.50 Spicy NASI LEMAK + UNREAL Roti Canai | A Day Of Eating In Penang
This is the first of a 5 part Penang series.
First stop, Transfer road roti canai. Said to be the best in all of Georgetown and I tell you what, they set the bar pretty darn high. Super kick of spice from the curry, nice tender chicken, and I light yet buttery roti canai.
Just a few blocks away and I went for Lor bah, but ended up ordering all the fried things I could. The prawn cracker and lor bah won my heart over though.
Now for some of the spicest and cheapest Nasi Lemak you will find in Penang. Wow, so addicting with that heat in the sambal. The way they drench all the nasi in sambal almost made me shed a tear it was such a beautiful sight.
Now over to Cecil market for the Chinese style Pasembur. A thick sweet potato sauce coating an assortment of goodies. Not to be passed up, nyonya kuih which I miss so much now that I have left Malaysia.
Lastly, Hokkien Mee. This is one of the three Kings in Hokkien Mee. The broth is thick and rich while having a nice kick of spice and funk. So good you’re going to want to take it home with you. Pair that with some yellow noodles, and that oh so amazing roasted pork belly and you got a slurp-tatic bowl of noodles.

I agree that good food brightens any gloomy day. The Penang Special Prawn Noodle Soup at Penang Restaurant which has a very intense prawn flavor, not overly fishy or salty and very well balanced, remains as a star dish at this restaurant. The prawns were sweet and succulent. Our next top favorite was the Penang Fried Char Kway Teow; spicy and delicious! What more could I ask for?

Kuala Lumpur has a well-stocked cheap Electronic’s markets (Low Yat Plaza), high-end shopping malls (Pavilion, Suria KLCC), beautiful city parks, and a fairly robust middle-class that is well-educated, interesting, fun, and polite. There are also crazy cheap street markets and fun walkable bar hopping areas (Bangsar, Changkat Bukit Bintang). I never felt intimidated or in fear during my stay in Kuala Lumpur.
Kuala Lumpur doesn't have the high energy of Hong Kong, the organization of Singapore, the crazy night-life of Bangkok, or the extreme cleanliness of Tokyo, but it is an oasis from the isolation from modernization that you may feel after spending months in smaller towns and beach communities in SE Asia. Kuala Lumpur’s charms are not so obvious upon arrival but they will grow on you. I was there for a few months and really enjoyed my stay.
Food: There are many amazing restaurants, including high-end restaurants ($$$), middle range restaurants ($$) and some very delicious low end restaurants ($). At the highest end restaurants whether Japanese, European, or Fusion, you could easily spend $100 per person depending on your order and whether or not you order an expensive wine and after dinner drinks. But you can also eat one of the best meals of your life in a more typical upper end restaurant for under $12 per person. Family style mid-level restaurants are all over town for $3-6 per meal, and at the low end in open street markets are around $2-4 per meal.
Accommodations: While in Kuala Lumpur, I started a new online business and needed reliable connectivity for the first few months. So, I decided to remain stationary for a few months. Subscribe to the Vagabond Buddha web page or youtube channel if you would like updates about the ways I make money online. Also, since I love to cook, and was going to be stationary for a few months, I decided to rent a furnished 1 bedroom apartment with kitchen, while I was in Kuala Lumpur. I found a chic 1 bedroom apartment on the 37th floor of a high rise condo complex. It has a floor to ceiling view of the Petronas Towers and was located in the high-end embassy row section of Kuala Lumpur, called Ampang. It cost me $37 per night. There were 1 bedroom furnished apartments for under $30 per night on Airbnb.com, but sometimes I splurge for a nice view. Before finding the apartment I stayed in a respectable mid-level hotel room for about $20 per night. There are also hostel dorms starting for about $7 per night.
Things to do in Kuala Lumpur:
Petronas Towers: You are going to need a picture of yourself in front of the Petronas Towers or nobody will believe you have been to Kuala Lumpur. If you would like to go to the top for a visit, the tickets are about $20.
Little India: Malaysia has three main cultures--Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Make sure to visit Little India for your Indian experience of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes.
Chinatown: Make sure to visit Chinatown also.
Bangsar Baru: For a walkable neighborhood that includes an assortment of great restaurants, pubs, wine bars, coffee houses, and dance clubs, visit Bangsar Baru. Walk the 4 block area around this Bangsar Baru link to find your favorites.
Parks Visited: From a Google map of Kuala Lumpur, you can see that there are a number of parks. I visited a few during my stay there. First, I visited the Perdana Botanical Garden. It is big and beautiful with many photo opportunities. Second, is the park at the Petronas Towers, KLCC Park. The park is beautiful and has a padded running track if you are worried about your knees. Finally, there is a beautiful lake I ran around in the mornings, Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir.
Changkat Bukit Bintang: For a walkable neighborhood that includes an assortment of great restaurants, pubs, wine bars, coffee houses, and dance clubs, visit Changkat Bukit Bintang. Walk the 4 block area around this Changkat Bukit Bintang to find your favorites.
Batu Caves: From KL Sentral take the KMUTER train to one of the most beautiful and sacred Hindu temples in the world, Batu Caves. Make sure to walk around and explore completely.
TV Tower and Observation Deck: Make sure to visit the world’s highest TV Tower and Observation deck. I wouldn’t have dinner there though. The food was a bit predictable. But the $12 ticket cost for just the observation deck, is worth the money for the view.
