Beijing Beihai Park Tour
Beihai Park is a public park and former imperial garden located in the northwestern part of the Imperial City, Beijing. First built in the 11th century, it is among the largest of all Chinese gardens and contains numerous historically important structures, palaces, and temples. Since 1925, the place has been open to the public as a park. It is also connected at its northern end to the Shichahai.
The park has an area of more than 69 hectares (171 acres), with a lake that covers more than half of the entire park. At the center of the park is an island called Jade Flower Island (琼华岛; 瓊華島; Qiónghuádǎo), whose highest point is 32 meters (105 ft).
Beihai literally means Northern Sea. There are also corresponding Central (Zhonghai) and Southern (Nanhai) Seas. These latter two are joined inside a complex of buildings known after them as Zhongnanhai; it is the home of China's paramount leaders.
The Beihai Park, as with many of Chinese imperial gardens, was built to imitate renowned scenic spots and architecture from various regions of China; the Taihu lake, the elaborate pavilions and canals in Hangzhou and Yangzhou, the delicate garden structures in Suzhou and others all served as inspirations for the design of the numerous sites in this imperial garden. The structures and scenes in the Beihai Park are described as masterpieces of gardening technique that reflects the style and the superb architectural skill and richness of traditional Chinese garden art.
The White Pagoda (白塔, Bai Ta, White Tower) is a 40-meter (131 ft) high stupa placed on the highest point on Jade Flower Island, built to honour the visit of the 5th Dalai Lama in 1651. Its body is made of white stone. Sun, moon and flame engravings decorate the surface of the tower. Destroyed in 1679 by an earthquake, it was rebuilt the following year, and restored again in 1976 because of the Tangshan earthquake near Beijing. A reliquary, secreted inside the structure are Buddhist scriptures, monk's mantles and alms bowl, and the bones of monks (their remains after cremation).

Chinese Martial Art Performance in Iron Pagoda, KaiFeng, Henan, China
The Iron Pagoda (Chinese: 鐵塔) of Youguo Temple (佑國寺), Kaifeng City, Henan province, is a Buddhist Chinese pagoda built in 1049 during the Song dynasty (960–1279) of China. The pagoda is so-named not because it is made of iron, but because its color resembles that of iron. It is a brick pagoda tower built on the location of a previous wooden one that had been burnt down by lightning fire in 1044. Along with the Liuhe, Lingxiao, Liaodi, Pizhi, and Beisi pagodas, it is seen as a masterpiece of Song dynasty architecture.

Kunming to Yichuang
Shaanxi Province
Flight via Xian
Early flight to Xian, breakfast at 6:00am .. Bus ride to Yichang. Tony our guide dot he last few days left us and Mark our new guide met us at the airport in Xian. The temperature was about 2 deg c. but dry.. I kind of enjoyed the change. We are less the 100 meters above sea level and by the end of our 5 hour drive we will be about 1,000 meters. It was about noon and time for lunch but most of us were not really too hungry, it was decided to continue on to our destination and pick up snacks on the way.
During the bus ride Mark gave us a in depth history over view of Shaanxi province. This province has a 2,000 year old history as the center or capital of China. It was also the local where the Great Walk ended in the 1930's. The area of northern Shaanxi province is noted for oil and coal production. Yau Sun commented that Shannxi has most of its historical artifacts under ground where as the neighboring province of Shanxi has most of its historical artifacts above ground.
A few hours into the drive north, we stopped at a road side service center. I was a flat broke so I could not buy any junk food.. Tim was good enough to lend me 100y (I already owe him 20y).. Got to find a bank machine soon... As we pulled into the station Ella commented on the who,e in the hills.. I thought the we're grave sites.. But no, Mark told us they were dwelling. Actually homes and that as we drove north we would see more of them..
Arrived Yicahng around 4:00pm and had time to to walk around the town. Yichang is like many remote northern towns in China. They then to be dusty and have an industrial look and feel. Ella and I went for a walk around and noticed that the locals seemed to be surprised to see us.. They tended to have one of three reactions, excitement or just total shock. Some times the men gave Ella a strange look that she found unnerving..
We walked through a food market down a dark lane... The food looked good and the people were very friendly.. Later we went into a super market store. A young girl who it appeared followed us and approached me in the store to fine out where I was from and what language I spoke. She also asked me my name about four times. She was so beautiful and when I held her hand she blushed and shook like a leaf. we got a few photos with the store clerks and then headed back to the hotel.
Dinner was at a local restaurant that I am sure we would not be able to find on our own. It was a large two story with many rooms.. Our diner room had its own bath room with a north American style toilet. On a side note, the hotel was very strange. It was an original government style complex. On the outside it looked very plain. Three two story building facings a central square. The plain exterior did not reveal the extreme life style of the hotel lobby and rooms... All white marble floors. The lobby was as nice as any if the five star hotels and the rooms were amazing. Beautiful washrooms and showers, the TV and Computers in each room with internet. I had the feeling that these special facilities were available to a select few and the plain exterior was designed to not show off the lavish life style of the rooms..

Heaven Lake of Changbai Mt , China on the Northern Slope
The largest crater lake in the world is in the Northeastern part of China, Gilrim Province. Its name is 天池 (Heaven Lake),長白山(Changbai Mt.). However, Koreans also call this mountain as 'Baekdoo Mt., their 'Spiritaul Mountain(靈山)'. The climate of Heaven Lake is very whimsy as it is located up high in the mountain near clouds. So, you are very lucky if you can see this huge lake without thick clouds, fogs, rain, strong winds, etc.
