Li Jiang Old town Fire a painful lesson for perservance cultural heritage Architecture chinese style
Most of a 1,300-year-old Tibetan town popular with tourists was destroyed by a fire over the weekend, renewing concerns over commercial development at Chinese heritage sites.
The blaze, which raged for 10 hours on Saturday, destroyed at least 240 houses or two thirds of the ancient settlement of Dukezong in Yunnan province, southwest China, according to Xinhua state news agency.
The town was known for its well-preserved Tibetan dwellings and the fire spread easily from one wooden house to the other after starting in a small hotel.
Some 2,600 residents were evacuated from the scene, but no casualties were reported, Xinhua added.
The possibility of arson has been ruled out, and the cause of fire is still under investigation, local authorities said.
More than 1,000 firefighters and volunteers battled the flames, officials said, but the narrow streets made it difficult for fire trucks to maneuver.
Fire fighters also found that hydrants were empty due to a shutdown in water supply during sub-zero winter conditions, according to Chen Tianchang, head of the fire service for the Deqen Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the region where the town is located.
The town forms part of a county now called Shangri-La, which with its dramatic scenery claims to have inspired the fictional paradise described in the 1933 novel by British author James Hilton.
The fire also renewed concerns over commercial development in China's ancient towns, which have witnessed growing numbers of tourists in recent years. There have been a string of fires at heritage sites in recent months, Xinhua reported.
In October, a blaze tore down an ancient building complex in Hongjiang, central China and a covered bridge in the Western city of Chongqing was destroyed by fire in November. Another fire also raged in the old town of Lijiang, Yunnan in March.
Li Gang, director of the region's cultural relics protection department, told Xinhua that the traditional gaps between the wood buildings in Dukezong to prevent fires had been filled in by restaurants, shops and guesthouses as tourism booms.
We have to reconsider the traditional principle of architecture while enhancing fire extinguishing facilities, Li said.

A REAL Ancient Town + ABANDONED School || Wangyu Village, Sichuan, China
My Patreon:
Wangyu Village is a small village in Sichuan, China. Located just above the village is Wangyu Ancient Town (望鱼古镇), the older, traditional homes of the local villagers. It's rare to come across these old wooden buildings in China nowadays, and it's REALLY rare to visit an empty ancient town. Being able to be alone with your thoughts at a tourist attraction in China is no easy task, so I definitely recommend this place.
To get to Wangyu (望鱼), first take a bus from Chengdu to Ya'an. When getting to Ya'an, take public bus #4 south all the way to the last stop. You'll see a line of white vans that go to different villages in the Ya'an area, and one of those will go to Wangyu. Once you're done with Wangyu, just wait around on the bridge until one of the white vans shows up to take you back to Ya'an. Good luck!

996 Podcast, Episode 4: Liu Zhen on Bytedance’s Global Vision and Why Toutiao Is Unique
GGV Capital’s Hans Tung and Zara Zhang interview Liu Zhen, the senior vice president of Bytedance (Toutiao), one of the fastest-growing Chinese tech startups that has made a lot of headlines. You may know Bytedance through its flagship product, Jinri Toutiao (今日头条), a content discovery and recommendation mobile app platform that uses artificial intelligence to recommend content to its users. What you may be less familiar with is that Bytedance also owns some of the most popular short video apps in China, and has demonstrated its global vision with its recent merger with Musical.ly, a top-ranking short video app in many countries with hundreds of millions of users, and a GGV portfolio company. Prior to Bytedance, Liu Zhen led Uber’s China team before it was acquired by Didi Chuxing (a GGV portfolio company) in 2016.
With a background that includes being a lawyer in Silicon Valley, helping Uber scale in China, and spearheading Bytedance’s global expansion, Zhen has had unique experiences that inform her views on the tech ecosystem in China and the U.S.

How I Finally Got Past My Anger Towards My Old Company (Bytedance)
After spending a year and a half working at the Bytedance office in LA on apps like TopBuzz, Tik Tok, Vigo etc., I was basically pushed out of the company when I was sick with the flu. Everything was done so surreptitiously and behind my back at my weakest moment. When things got bad, there was no one there to even direct my anger, let alone offer any kind of support. It was such a loneliness that I would not even wish on my worst enemies. And it was an absolutely Chinese experience. People for millennia have fallen in China this way. I thought I had put everything behind me and moved on, but when I was in China last month visiting my family, I was reminded of it and realized that I still had a lot of residual anger that I never dealt with properly. Once I realized I still had some leftover bookends I needed to write, I started taking action and confronting some hard truths. It helped me learn and grow again as a person. Once I realized I still had some unhealthy anger in my heart, I also started putting aside my ego and started understanding more about Chinese culture from my relatives. They really sympathized with me (since most of them were older and have experienced similar things). After all, we all agreed, it's better to have experienced the worst of human nature as a young person to be prepared later in life. I would say I finally moved on earlier this month (in October). So this is a reflection that's months in the making and should have been out earlier if I understood the importance of humble self-reflection. We talk a lot on this channel about getting past trauma and unfortunate circumstances and growing stronger, and this is a video that I needed to make. Hope it helps you too! Like always, please share your thoughts and life experiences in the comments! If anyone at Bytedance sees this. Wishing you guys the best ;)
