Japan Trip: Taking a Trip Back in Time on Honjima Island, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, 38
Visitors interested in maritime transportation, Japan’s past and small island beauty should visit Honjima (本島), located in the Seto Inland Sea off the coast of Marugame City in Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku. Honjima is the second largest island in the Shiwaku Islands which belong to Marugame City.
Shiwaku Islands played a vital role in maritime century with Honjima being the center of power among the islands. In the past, the home base of the Shiwaku Navy (Shiwaku Suigun) was located in Honjima. In the late 1500’s, Toyotomi Hideyoshi recruited members of Shiwaku Navy, an organization of highly skilled Japanese sailors, join him to facilitate trade as well as government affairs on behalf of the shogun. Visitors interested in learning more about this part of Japanese history are encouraged to visit the former government office (Shiwaku Kinbansho). Visitors can view relics of the Shiwaku Navy here, such as the logbook of the Kanrin Mary, the first Japanese ship to cross the Pacific Ocean.
Visitors may also wish to visit Kasashima Town, along the northeastern coast of Honjima. Walking through the narrow streets with the old fashioned stone walls, visitors will come upon the Important Historic Structure Group Preservation Zone where old wooden townhouses that have been preserved to reflect the traditional architecture. Though there are about 20 townhouses, only 3 have been site aside for visitors to enter to view the typical traditional Japanese household items.
Among the few other points of interest on the island is the old fashioned elementary school, the former Mizumiiro Elementary School on the west coast. This school was used in the 2004 movie “Kikansha Sensei (Big Silent Man)”. Also on the west coast is Meotogura (couple warehouse), a uniquely constructed warehouse. Visitors will find various shrines and temples on the island as well.
Honjima is one of the venues for Setouchi Triennale, a modern art festival with venues spread out among the islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Several of the outdoor art pieces from the festival have a permanent home on Honjima, allowing visitors to appreciate them during their visit.

From Shikoku:
From Marugame, visitors can utilize the high speed or car ferries between Marugame Port and Honjima Port. The one-way journey on the high speed ferry will take 20 minutes with a cost of 550 yen. The one-way journey on the car ferry will take 35 minutes with a cost of 550 yen as well. There are only eight ferry departures per day.
From Honshu (mainland Japan):
From Kojima, visitors can take a high speed ferry to Honjima Port. The one-way journey will take 30 minutes with a cost of 640 yen. There are only 2 departures in the mornings followed by 2 departures in the afternoon.

Located in the center of Seto Inland Sea off the coast of Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku is Awashima Island. Due to its position in the sea, Awashima was an important port for the Shiwaku Navy, an organization of highly skilled Japanese sailors which controlled this region of the Seto Inland Sea.
In 1897, the Meiji Government opened the National Sailor School on Awashima Island. Many skilled graduates went on to work on important ships such as the Kanrin Maru, the first Japanese ship to cross the Pacific Ocean. Though the school closed in 1987 and was transformed into the Awashima Marine Memorial Park, the schoolhouse has been preserved and visitors can view maritime artifacts here.

This star shaped island is truly a beautiful place. Jonoyama Viewpoint offers breathtaking views over the island. And for visitors fortunate to be here at night, a clear star studded sky, unobstructed by tall buildings or pollution can be seen. Looking onto the sea, visitors can see the flickering lights of the sea cruisers and perhaps even towns on nearby islands. But, visitors who visit Awashima from the end of May to the beginning of October may experience the star-like, blue lights that emerge from the sea fireflies (bioluminescent crustaceans) swimming in the waters of the island’s beaches. The best time to view these twinkle stars of the sea is the beginning of autumn.
Awashima is one of the venues of the Setouchi Triennale, a contemporary art festival with multiple venues among the Seto Inland Sea. At the time of festival in autumn 2013, a dozen or so pieces were displayed throughout the island. However, now only has a permanent home here. The art piece is located inside the old marine naval school.

1. Train to Takuma Station:
*From Marugame Station: Board the local JR Train bound for Takuma Station. The journey should take about 20 minutes with a cost of 260 yen.
*From Takamatsu Station: Board the local or limited express train JR Train bound for Takuma Station. The journey should take about 30-60 minutes with a cost from 850-2320 yen.
*From Okayama Station: Board the local or limited express train JR Train bound for Takuma Station. The journey should take about 60-75 minutes with a cost from 1320-3220 yen.
Note: A transfer may be needed at Tadotsu Station or Utazu Station
2. Takuma Station to Suda Port
*From Takuma station, there are community buses to Suda Port. There is 1 bus every hour. Disembark at Sudako Mae Bus Stop. The journey should take 20 minutes with a cost of 100 yen. From the bus stop, it is a 5 minute to the Suda Port.
3. Suda Port to Awashima
Board a ferry at Suda Port to Awashima. The ferry ride should take 15 minutes with a cost of 330 yen. There are eight ferries per day.

Pengunjung yang tertarik pada transportasi maritime, haruslah mengunjuni pulau kecil yang indah yang terdapat di Jepang yaitu Honjima, yang berlokasi di Laut Pedalaman Seto diluar pesisir kota Marugame di Prefektur Kagawa, Shikoku. Honjima adalah pulau terbesar kedua di Kepulauan Shiwaku yang merupakan kesatuan dari Kota Marugame.
Kepulauan Shiwaku berperan penting di jaman maritime dengan Honjima sebagai pusat kekuatan dari seluruh pulau. Di jaman dahulu, basis kediaman dari Angkatan Laut Shiwaku (Shiwaku Suigun) berlokasi di Honjima. Di akhir taun 1500-an, Toyotomi Hideyoshi merekrut anggota Angkatan Laut Shiwaku, sebuah organisasi dari pelaut professional Jepang, untuk bergabung dengannya dan memfasilitasi perdagangan serta urusan pemerinah atas nama Shogun. Pengunjung yang tertarik untuk mempelajari lebih banyak mengenai bagian sejarah Jepang ini dianjurkan untuk mengunjungi bekas kantor pemerintahan (Shiwaku Kinbansho). Located off the coast of Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku is the small fisherman island Ibukijima Island (伊吹島). Visitors may be surprised to learn that this island, only 1 square kilometer in size is the nation’s largest producers for sardines and anchovies. Visitors interested in the capture and processing of these tiny sea creatures should visit the island from June to August.
Ibukijima’s roadways are the old-fashioned maze of narrow alleys which makes wandering around this island on foot the best means to explore. Visitors will find temples and shrines, including the Ibuki Hachimangu Shrine on the island. There are stores and restaurants on the island as well.
However, Ibukijima is suffering from depopulation. Though the island has the top position in sardine/anchovy production, each year the number of residents is declining. Schools are being closed, due to lack of students and there are several vacant houses on this beautiful island.
Ibukijima is one of the venues for Setochi Triennale, a modern art festival with multiple exhibit locations among the islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Ibukijima and the other islands hope to rebrand themselves as contemporary art friendly islands to increase economic and population growth. One of the pieces from the 2013 show, the House of Toilet, has a permanent home on the island for visitors to appreciate.

**From Okayama Station, board a local or limited express JR Train to Kanonji. The one way journey will take 60-110 minutes with a cost of 1530 to 3230 yen.

Japan Art Festival on Shamijima Island - Spring Setouchi Triennale Art Festival 2019
The Setouchi Triennale Art Festival 2019 is held in the middle of Japan on islands in Okayama and Kagawa prefectures in between Honshu and Shikoku islands.
This Shamijima location is only taking part in the festival until the end of May 26, 2019. If you miss the art-festival, however, don't worry as this facility has many other permanent attractions to enjoy at any time of year.

Seto Ohashi Bridge, the great bridge connecting Shikoku to Okayama Prefecture in Honshu, has its southernmost “foot” on Shamijima Island (沙弥島), located in the Seto Inland Sea off the coast of Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku. Originally a tiny island on its own, Shamijima was connected to the larger landmass by reclaimed land in 1967. This peaceful island boasts a small fishing village, museums, beaches, temples and of course, a magnificent view of the Seto Ohashi.
Though small, this island has many points of interest for its visitors. The Higashiyama Kaii Setouchi Art Museum displays the artwork of Higashiyama Kaii, a landscape painter. His artwork is rotated seasonally with two annual special exhibits held in the spring and autumn.

The Seto Ohashi Memorial Park is nearby the Higashiyama Kaii Art Museum. This park commemorates the completion of the Seto Ohashi Bridge. Within the park grounds, visitors can find the Seto Ohashi Memorial Hall which has photographs and displays explaining the history and construction of the bridge.

帰りのフェリーのデッキからフェリーに乗り込んでくる人達をジオラマ撮影しました。

Wisata Jepang : Menengok Jepang masa lalu di lokasi syuting film Nijushi Hitomi. Pulau Shodoshima, Kagawa
Antusias mengunjungi tempat syuting film,
kampung film Nijushi no Hitomi atau Dua Puluh Empat Mata di pulau Shodoshima, terletak di Laut Pedalaman Seto sepanjang pantai Prefektur Kagawa, Shikoku. Film ini bercerita tentang seorang guru dan murid-muridnya selama kebangkitan nasionalisme Jepang sebelum Perang Dunia II. Film ini dibuat ulang pada tahun 1987. Setelah menyelesaikan film tahun 1987, lokasi syuting film Nijushi no Hitomi Eigamura, dibuka untuk umum.
Pengunjung akan menemukan kampung sudah ditata rapi sesuai setting film. Mulai dari rumah, sekolah, kuil dan lapangan, pengunjung diperbolehkan berkeliling untuk ikut merasakan suasana seperti di dalam film.
Meskipun banyak gedung bernuansa bersejarah di sana, ada beberapa bangunan bernuansa modern, pengunjung bisa mengunjungi restoran yang menyajikan makan tradisional Jepang. Ada juga bioskop kuno yang menampilkan film Nijushi no Hitomi atau Dua Puluh Empat Mata. Selain itu ada juga dua museum kecil di mana pengunjung dapat belajar mengenai penulis film dan sejarah bioskop Jepang.
Jam buka : 9:00 sampai 17:00 (dari jam 8:30 pada November)

Via Bus
Dari Pelabuhan Tonosho, naik bus ke Eigamura (Destinasi terakhir). Perjalannya memakan waktu 60 menit dan biaya 1020 yen (Sekali jalan). Ada 3 bus perharinya.
Dari Pelabuhan Kusakabe naik bus ke Eigamura (destinasi terakhir). Perjalanannya memakan waktu 30 menit dan biaya 490 yen sekali jalan. Ada 3 bus perharinya.
Dari Pelabuhan Sakate, naik bus ke Eigamura (destinasi terakhir). Perjalanannya akan memakan waktu 40 menit dan biaya 370 yen sekali jalan. Hanya ada 3 bus perhari.
Dengan mobil atau taksi
Dari Pelabuhan Tonosho, perjalanannya akan memakan waktu sekitar 1 jam. Ongkos taksi sekitar 8500 yen.
Dari Pelabuhan Fukuda, perjalanannya akan memakan waktu sekitar 45 menit. Ongkos taksi sekitar 7500 yen.
Dari Pelabuhan Kusakabe, perjalanannya akan memakan waktu sekitar 25 menit. Ongkos taksi sekitar 1200 yen.
