Come and explore the Hoolangapar Gibbon Sanctuary with us in just 300 seconds and learn some interesting facts about it. The sanctuary is situated in the Jorhat district of Assam and contains India's only Gibbon - Hoolock Gibbon and Northeastern India's only nocturnal primate – the Bengal slow loris.

Nearest Airport - Jorhat Airport (22.9 km)
Nearest Railway Station - Mariani Junction (4.9 km)
Nearest Bus Stop - Mariani Bus Terminal (4.9 km)
Best Time to Visit - Any time apart from the summer season. Early morning visit re recommended.
Permission is necessary for Videography and also we would recommend you to hire a forest ranger from the Forest Office that you can find at the entrance of the Sanctuary. The charges for hiring a ranger varies from Rs. 300/- to Rs. 500/- depending on how much time you spent in the sanctuary. Also don't forget to wear boots or shoes to save your feet from leeches.

The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary renamed on 25 May 2004, formerly known as the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary or Hollongapar Reserve Forest, is an isolated protected area of evergreen forest located in Jorhat district of Assam, India. The sanctuary was officially established and renamed in 1997. In the early 1900s, artificial regeneration was used to a develop well-stocked forest, resulting in the site’s rich biodiversity. The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary contains India’s only gibbons – the hoolock gibbons, and Northeastern India’s only nocturnal primate – the Bengal slow loris. The upper canopy of the forest is dominated by the Hollong tree, while the Nahar dominates the middle canopy. The lower canopy consists of evergreen shrubs and herbs.
On 30 July 1997, the sanctuary was constituted under the civil district of Jorhat and named it the “Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary” after the only apes found in India. It is the only sanctuary in India named after a gibbon due to its distinction for containing the densest gibbon populations in Assam.
The sanctuary has a rich biodiversity and is home to the only apes in India, the western Hoolock hoolock as well as the only nocturnal primate found in the northeast Indian states, the Bengal slow loris. Other primates include the stump-tailed macaque, northern pig-tailed macaque, eastern Assamese macaque, rhesus macaque, and capped langur. Also found at the sanctuary are Indian elephants, tigers, leopards, jungle cats, wild boar, three types of civet, four types of squirrel, and several other types of mammal. At least 219 species of bird and several types of snake are known to live in the park.
The sanctuary has a rich diversity of flora at each layer in the canopy.The upper canopy consists mostly of Dipterocarpus macrocarpus rising 12 to 30 m (39 to 98 ft) and having straight trunks. Other species found in the top canopy include Sam, Amari, Sopas, Bhelu, Udal and Hingori. A variety of evergreen shrubs and herbs make up the lower canopy and ground layers.

✒From 7 days whole jungle roamed then 8th day luckily got the those primates( Western Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock hoolock )
communicating among themselves. Though hidden deep in the woods ,tried to record their voices & some video clips of this Ape.
IUCN Status of Western Hoolock Gibbon :
India has only 2 species of Ape namely Western Hoolock Gibbon & Eastern Hoolock Gibbon .Their distribution is limited to the southern bank of the Dibang-Brahmaputra river system in North-east India. They prefer Tropical & Sub- Tropical forest are the primary habitats of these two canopy dwelling ,Frugivore and monogamous species .
Habitat loss & Hunting are major threats Of Hoolock Gibbon.
