Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Ripon (#802)
[Original Airdate: January 10, 2019]
Ripon, Wisconsin. Here’s what we knew before we came: birthplace of the Republican Party, home to Ripon College and Speed Queen washing machines, and used to be home of Rippin’ Good Cookies. What we know now: Ripon is a vertical farming, scrapbooking, pizza making, Clydesdale raising, tuba playing bonanza! Throw in a thriving downtown and the teddy bears that Suki makes from old fur coats and you see why Ripon is John McGivern’s kind of town!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Oak Creek (#807)
[Original Airdate: February 14, 2019]
We thought we knew Oak Creek. But then we pulled up at the new town center, looked at each other and said, “Wait. THIS is Oak Creek? When did this get here?!?”
We did know some things. John knew how to get to his friend Marcus’s house. We knew that Ikea recently came to Oak Creek, that Eder Flag has been here for decades, and that GO Riteway is headquartered in and has boomed here. But we didn’t know that millions of items are screen printed each year in Oak Creek at Redwall Screen Printing, or that we could play at City 13 and feel really smart doing it. We didn’t know that the Academy of Performing Arts in Oak Creek teaches 900 kids each year. And we didn’t know that people of all religions are welcome at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
To us, Oak Creek will always be known as the most familiar unfamiliar place we’ve loved!

Sikh Temple Shootings: Waking In Oak Creek | Program |
[Original Airdate: August 4, 2014]
SIKH TEMPLE SHOOTINGS: WAKING IN OAK CREEK In 2012, Oak Creek, WI was rocked by hate after a white supremacist killed six worshippers at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. In the year following the attack, the mayor and police chief led the community, as they developed new bonds with their Sikh neighbors. Young temple members, and a police lieutenant, shot 15 times in the attack, inspire thousands to gather for events and honor the victims. This film highlights a community and law enforcement working together to overcome tragedy, stand up to hate, and create a safe town for all. Dan Jones concludes this special by speaking with Lt. Brian Murphy (retired) of the Oak Creek Police Department, Oak Creek Mayor Stephen Scaffidi, and Pardeep Kaleka, the son of Satwant Kaleka, the president of the temple who was gunned down in the rampage, along with five others. (Recorded July, 2014)

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | West End (#602)
[Latest Airdate: October 5, 2017]
[Original Airdate: January 12, 2017]
The West End is one of the most eclectic areas in Milwaukee, and we think eclectic is great! Miller, Harley-Davidson, renovated mansions, tiny Shriner cars and chickens - all together in about one square mile just west of downtown Milwaukee! The neighborhoods to the north and south of Wisconsin Avenue from 27th Street west to Highway 175 - Concordia, Cold Spring Park, Merrill Park and the Valley-Pigsville neighborhoods --- are collectively referred to as the West End. And while it's true that John found the architectural combinations puzzling and the zoning to be crazy, even he had to admit that here it all works!
