Hope for Taly Art Gallery Fundraiser 2010
Hope for Taly is a not-for profit organization founded to honour Liat Weiss's late mother, Taly Weiss, who passed away from pancreatic cancer this past June 10th. An art gallery retrospective was held at the Toronto Board of Trade featuring her life's works as an artist. The event was catered and sponsored by Oliver and Bonacini Restaurants as well as other Toronto companies. There was a silent auction, raffle, and prints of the original art displayed that were for sale and were being bought up quickly. This organization is recognized by the Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation and all proceeds went to support the cause. For more information visit hopefortaly.com

When I was in China I dreamed about freedom. After I landed here, I understood the real meaning of freedom. It is not something given, it is paid for through pain and suffering. Pain is a state of transition from one culture to another.
Artist and professor at the University of British Columbia, Gu Xiong came to Canada from China in 1989 seeking freedom for his art. I came to Canada because I want to make the artwork I like, because I couldn't do it it in China. Xiong lived through Mao's cultural revolution and was forced to spend four years in a labour camp.
In the video above, Xiong shows us a photo of where he spent these years at the labour camp and the rice grass shoes he walked hundreds of kilometres in.
At the time there was no hope for us, Xiong says, reflecting on the experience. Art helped give him meaning and get him through this time: Every night I was doing sketches. I was trying to find my hope from inside myself. I found art is meaningful to my life. I could hold myself. I could get through the very difficult time.

The moniker Embassy of Imagination calls up an organized set of creative thinkers, and that's exactly what this group of young people from Nunavut is. The collective, led by PA System's Alexa Hatanaka and Patrick Thompson, is made up of youth from Cape Dorset, Nunavut who are turning their dreams into large-scale art and change for their community.
They've painted huge murals on the sides of buildings, and for their most recent project at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Embassy went smaller. Their installation at the AGO's exhibition Every. Now. Then: Reframing Nationhood includes small sculptures of snowmobiles, each one different from the other and each embodying the vision of the artists who made them (including Christine Adamie, Moe Kelly, David Pudlat, Nathan Adla and Lachaolasie Akesuk). And the sculptures went a long way to become what they are: they originated in a tragedy, the fire in Cape Dorset that burned down a local high school. From what remained on the site, the artists collected copper and aluminum that was eventually transformed into the snowmobiles in their installation.
The snow machines are particularly magical because they represent what the sale of the sculptures can bring the youth of Cape Dorset: a program where elders can take them out on full-sized snowmobiles to gain knowledge and skills important to their own growth. As Hatanaka says: It's really an important exercise for the youth to think about how it is that they could actually be creative and use art to solve real problems and make change in their community.

hey guys! Its been over a month since I vlogged and I really wanted to get back into it, I want to try and make my vlogs more interesting and more visually appealing so hopefully over the next few weeks I can achieve that goal! In this vlog I have a pretty busy weekend checking out The State of Alaska EP release show, singingin my own recital and helping my sister Paige set up her Photo exhibition for her school art gallery/show. There are Huge Transformers in Port Hope!
Voted the top tourist attraction in Port Hope, and I can see why!
Primitive Designs is so friggin' cool with gigantic robots/Transformers. The retail gallery and gift shop imports exotic antiques and crafts from countries such as Vietnam, Bali, Thailand and Mexico. From furniture, tiki huts, paintings, wall decor, light fixtures, to huge giant robots; this store is like entering an exotic museum.

Students learned about Canadian art and artists such as Emily Carr and the Group of Seven, as well as colour, line, composition, design and architecture. David Blackwood was born in Wesleyville, Bonavista Bay, November 7, 1941. His father was Captain Edward Blackwood, and his mother was Molly Blackwood. Blackwood grew up in an out port populated with schooner and sealing captains. He spent his summers aboard his father's schooner, the Flora S. Nickerson, fishing off the Labrador coast. He also spent sometime on Bragg's Island with his grandparents. When he was fifteen, he fished out of Wesleyville with his own boat and lobster traps.
Blackwood opened up his own art studio in 1956, where he painted during the winter months and then he sold his work to visitors during the summer. His artwork won several awards, which gained admission to Ontario College of Art in 1959. He sold one of his first etchings The Lost Party to the National Gallery of Canada for its permanent collection.
After he graduated, he remained in Ontario, teaching part time while working on his artwork. At this time he developed the very famous Lost Party series of etchings which focused on the S.S Newfoundland sealing disaster of 1914. It contains 50 etchings it is one of the largest series of prints in Canadian history. Since then , he remained one of the country's foremost artists winning numerous awards and receiving honorary doctorates from several universities, including Memorial University if Newfoundland. He also greatly involved with the creation of an art gallery at Erindale, a branch of the university of Toronto. As a sign of gratitude to Blackwood , it was eventually named the Blackwood gallery.
Then in 1974, the National film board produced a documentary about him merely titled: Blackwood. It won a world wide acknowledgment gaining 10 international awards, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1975. In 1975 Blackwood was elected into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and to the Academia Italia in 1980. Also there are, wake of the Great Sealers a book written by Farley Mowat and The Art of David Blackwood.
His art continues to focus on Newfoundland, but he has not lived in the province on a regular basis since leaving art school in the early 1960's. He comes home to Wesleyville, once or twice a year. He now lives in Port Hope, Ontario. He says in interviews that if lived in the province it would hinder his ability to illustrate the stories of the Newfoundland out ports. Blackwood considered to be now one of Canada's best printmaker. He was retired from teaching, but continues to work on a full time basis as an artist.

The artist's specialty is fine translucent porcelain, but for many years she has also worked in a variety of mediums, creating works that vary from small pieces to large installations. Most of her work is symbolic, like the Philosopher's cups and the Cups of Praise. In her gallery she also offers porcelain jewellery and photographs.
Enid has many awards and honours to her credit, including two Croix de Chevalier in France and induction into the prestigious Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA).
