The haunted ruins of Hopton Castle : The murdered Roundheads
A site survey of the Haunted Castle. The ruins of Hopton Castle are located in the hamlet of Hopton Castle, In Shropshire, England, United Kingdom. A 12th Century construction, the stone tower was built in the 1260s by Walter de Hopton. The ruins of Hopton Castle are a Haunted ruins - Haunted by the Ghosts of the dead soldiers murdered here in 1644.
During the English Civil War ( 1642 - 1649 ) Hopton Castle was the scene of a siege. The Royalist forces of King Charles I, commanded by Sir Michael Woodhouse, besieged Hopton Castle with a force of about 500 Cavaliers. Inside the Parliamentarian Roundheads, commanded by a Samuel More, numbered less than 30. After a brutal siege lasting 3 weeks, the Cavaliers managed to dig a small hole into the castle, allowing them access and the siege was broken. However, it is what followed that makes the siege of Hopton Castle so infamous and which has generated the Haunting which still exists to this day.
The Royalist forces bid the Roundheads surrender and promised them fair treatment if they did. The Roundheads, seeing that their defences were breached offered their surrender to the Cavaliers. If they had expected the Cavaliers to honour their word of fair treatment for prisoners, then they were mistaken.
A mass slaughter ensued. Roundhead prisoners were either butchered where they stood outside, or were taken into the castle dungeons and executed there. Only the commander of the Roundhead forces, Samuel More, was spared. Such an act of barbarism was not unknown of by Royalist forces within the English Civil War.
Hopton Castle is Haunted by the Ghosts of the murdered Roundheads, around 28 in number, their souls trapped within the ruins for all eternity, due to their violent deaths. The Ghosts can still be seen, mournful figures, whose Ghosts still bear the wounds which ended their lives.

Curiosities of Staffordshire- Battle of Hopton Heath
Today we visit the English Civil War battlefield of Hopton Heath near Stafford where, in 1643, some 1200 Royalist cavaliers and soldiers clashed with 1500 parliamentarian troops in several hours of bloody yet ultimately indecisive battle. Both sides would ultimately claim victory with very little gain on either side. The battlefield site is largely unremarkable and very little is known about the events of the battle itself but, after many years of campaigning, the battle was commemorated with a small monument at the site.

The haunted ruins of Ruyton Castle : The Headless Horseman
A site survey of the Haunted Ruined Castle. The ruins of Ruyton Castle exists in the village of Ruyton XI Towns, Shropshire, England, United Kingdom. It lies next to Ruyton Church and is very rare in England, in that the Graveyard of Ruyton Church has a ruined castle within its boundries. Both Ruyton Church and Ruyton Castle are beautiful examples of English history and heritage.
Ruyton Castle was built in the 1100s, destroyed by Welsh raiders in 1202 AD, rebuilt by 1313 AD, it was finally destroyed and ruined around 1400 AD by Owain Glyndwr and his Welsh soldiers.
Ruyton Castle, just like the Graveyard of Ruyton Church, is Haunted by the Ghost of a Headless Horseman, believed to be an English soldier who was beheaded by Welsh soldiers when the castle finally fell. The Headless Horseman is said to be preceeded by a Ghostly mist which rises up and engulfs both church and castle. A Ghost who does not seem to notice the living. He appears in the mists of the Graveyard and then charges his Ghostly horse towards the castle ruins.
