The Copsford Project, Horam, East Sussex.
Some years ago, I came across a curious book in a bookshop. Over a period of years, from a few clues within its pages, I pieced together where in Sussex the book was written about.
Copsford as it was then called, was a derelict house located on a farm near Horam, in East Sussex. The author Walter J. C. Murray in post war Britain, left the slums of London to embark on an adventure, to rent a dwelling in the countryside for 12 months and harvest medicinal herbs from the lanes, paths and woods of the county.
His year long adventure is recorded in this book.
Occasionally over the years, I have read a book where I've been inspired to visit the locations described. This book was one such publication and in September 2014, I stayed at Dernwood Farm Wild Camping site (the owner assisted my enquiries) for a few days during which I met with the current owner of the land on which Copsford once stood who also owns and runs Copford Sawmill.
There is now a book out on Walter J C Murray -
