Know Your Wisconsin: Horicon Marsh
Horicon Marsh is an internationally renowned wildlife refuge. “Horicon Marsh is this amazing wetland, freshwater cattail marsh in the contiguous United States,” Liz Herzmann, a wildlife educated mentioned. This impressive land also holds an abundance of wildlife for everyone to enjoy!
The Horicon Marsh Visitor and Education Center has a wide variety of activities that the public can enjoy. This includes bird-watching, hiking trails, canoeing, kayaking and more. In 2015, Horicon Marsh updated its facilities to make it more family-friendly and interactive with visitors. The main level offers a viewing area, a children's discovery center, and a gift shop. The lower level houses the Explorium, where visitors get hands-on experience with of marsh life, guided tours are also available!
Horicon Marsh - Wisconsin
Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area - The country’s largest freshwater cattail marsh
The largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States is here in Wisconsin.
Visitors can strike out on a hike from the Education and Visitor Center, go for a paddle or attend any number of hands-on events for wildlife enthusiasts of all ages. Whatever the weather, visitors can check out the hands-on Explorium, complete with an airboat simulator.
One of the marsh's key species is the humble muskrat. These little lodge builders work hard to maintain open waterways, eating cattails and making room for diverse plant, animal and bird species. They're also an important food source for other species like bobcats and raptors.
In the winter, Horicon remains active with trappers who come to its icy waterways in search of muskrat and other furbearer species. We also host one of the biggest candlelight hikes in the area every January.
If you're a lover of Wisconsin wildlife, plan your next outdoor adventure here at Horicon!

Bill Stokes on Horicon Marsh
82-year-old Bill Stokes is Wisconsin's most famous outdoor writer. He was hired away from the Milwaukee Journal to become a columnist for the Chicago Tribune.
One of Stokes' Tribune articles told Midwest readers about the major rivers in Wisconsin, including our Rock River. He also wrote a series about paddling the Rock River from its origins north of Horicon Marsh.
Stokes told me about the trip and read from his book entitled, The River Is Us, a collection of nature essays he wrote for the Chicago Tribune's OPED page.

The Heartbreak of the Horicon
In the spring of 2008 along Wisconsin's Horicon Marsh, 86 industrial wind turbines went on line. The turbines just two miles from the marsh, which is considered to be a wetland of global importance. If not for the efforts of concerned citizens, the wind developers would have put the turbines much closer. Wind developers downplay the effect of industrial scale turbines on wildlife, saying that wind energy's role in the reduction of green house gases is a fair trade for bird and bat deaths. But because wind turbines rely on fossil-fuel burning power plants in order to function, the National Academy of Sciences determined that that wind energy's impact on the reduction of CO2 emissions is negligible. Danish studies show the same conclusion. Wind energy is the only renewable resource that keeps us tied to fossil fuel and transmission lines. In the 2009 legislative session there will be a push for wind turbine siting reform. This will take away the power of our local governments to have any say about where wind turbines can be located in our communities and had this power to the PSC. There is no provision for the protection of wildlife in the Wisconsin draft model wind ordinance which the PSC supports. Visit hmsadvocates.org to find out how you can help. If all you know of Horicon is that there's a Marsh here, then you have (just like John did) a lot to learn. Truth is, the Horicon Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary --- loved and known by bird and wildlife lovers throughout the world - deserves all the acclaim it gets. But even though the Marsh stole our hearts (what a remarkable place!), the City of Horicon steals the show. The John Deere Horicon Works is a shining example of this community's ability to retain big-time manufacturing, but the smaller business here are no less impressive. Horicon Bank and Leroy Meats are stars in this community. Sure-Fire Inc., Family Chiropractic and the Rock River Tap are trusted Horicon staples. And the experiences we had at the Satterlee Clark House and Horicon Marsh Boat Tours will be remembered as standouts of season 6. Just one question: Does John have to wear the rubber hip waders to be considered an honorary Marshman? (He'd be happy to...)
