The Hornsby Water Clock, titled Man, Time and the Environment is a piece of kinetic sculpture, a decorative fountain and a functional clock in the Florence Street pedestrian mall in Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia. Unveiled in 1993, the sculpture was designed and engineered by Victor Cusack and constructed of bronze, stainless steel and glass by Victor and his foundry floor manager Rex Feakes. Construction, including alterations to the mall, cost over AU$1 million and took two and half years.
Have always found this a fascinating piece of public art. In the background, you can see the Westfields shopping centre. This wasn't there when the piece was built, and although underneath the mall there is a connecting avenue between the shopping complex, they created a curved walkway AROUND the work.

Some may remember ... the launch of the iconic Hornsby Water Sculpture 25 years ago. Here is a message the Bush Telegraph received from the co-creator of a video which captured this momentous event, David Ayres………
….along with co-producer Mike Twemlow, we produced AWAKENING - The Hornsby Water Sculpture. It has sat for 25 years on a crappy VHS copy. How the sculpture looks today is a very sad reflection of its bold statement of 25 years ago.
The Water Sculpture was conceived and designed by Victor Cusack, commissioned by Hornsby Council in 1990. Shortly after this Mike and I, professional documentary producers were engaged to produce an in-depth documentary about the philosophy and the workings of this public work of art. After years of delays, changes, issues, the documentary never came to fruition; however we were given a brief to produce a short promotional video, The Awakening. This has left many hours of original footage in archives.

The world population is more than half way to doubling in 25 years!
Why did Frank Lowy on behalf of Westfield dramatically change the design, from 2 straight lines on the plan to link the 2 carparks by a roadway, to a semicircular glass walk way? What a commendable architectural decision!
What should we do with Hornsby Quarry?
Council is creating a vast recreational park that will replace Hornsby Quarry. Soon we will be seeking ideas from the community about what should be included in it. As a starting point we hit the streets to ask some locals and these are their answers. What do you think?
