Maryland Horse Industry Day 2016
On February 23, 2016, the Maryland Horse Industry Partners took to Annapolis to bring the horse industry to Maryland's legislators.
The Maryland horse industry partners are a coordinated voice of individuals and businesses throughout the state involved in Thoroughbred and Standardbred horse racing and breeding, trail riding, steeplechase, sport horse competitions, rodeo, carriage driving, therapy programs, recreation and other equestrian industries. They represent over 200 equine organizations and 35 different equestrian disciplines.
Their mission is to educate public officials as well as citizens about the importance of the horse industry – in jobs, economic impact, open space, animal welfare and preservation of long-standing cultural traditions.
The 14 Horse Industry Day sponsors include: Cloverleaf Standardbred Owners' Association, Fasig-Tipton Co., Maryland Association for Wildlife Conservation, Maryland Horse Breeders Association, Maryland Horse Council, Maryland Horse Industry Board, Maryland Jockey Club, Maryland Million Ltd., Maryland Standardbred Breeders Association, Maryland State Fair, Maryland Steeplechase Association, Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, Ocean Downs Racetrack, and Rosecroft Raceway.

Historic home built in 1845, that has been renovated but still has plenty of historic charm with a large foyer, wood floors and staircase, second floor balcony and large windows. Turn right or left inside the entry for the family or living rooms, one with a wood burning insert, the other with a fireplace. Lovely windows provide lots of natural light. Modern, gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances that includes and induction stove. Lovely granite counters and back splash, large island and lots of cabinets. Beautiful double farm sink and a separate prep sink. Room for a small dining table in front of the wood stove and entry into the separate formal dining room. From the kitchen, one can access the large three season sun room where you can enjoy the mountain breezes and the lovely mountain and pastoral views. Also off the kitchen is a useful butler's pantry/mud room with lots of storage space in cabinets, closet, and hooks. There's also a mini fridge you can grab a cold one from and head outside or to the sun room or patio. Separate laundry room with wash sink, front loading machines, shelving, cabinets, and a drying rack is accessible through the pantry. There is a great home office space on the main floor with a built in desk, cabinets, and shelving. A powder bath is tucked into a small space under the stairs. Upstairs there are five bedrooms and three full baths. One bath is contained in one of the larger front bedrooms and the other two are Jack and Jill baths between two bedrooms. In true historic fashion, one of the bedrooms was once the servants quarters with a stairway down to the kitchen.
Landscaped with a variety of trees, shrubs, and perennial flowers including peonies, hydrangeas, rhododendron, lilies, lilacs, and irises. Brick parking area in the front of the house, brick sidewalks and brick front patio. Lovely two tiered stone patio on the side of the house. Lots of space for vegetable, herb, and flower gardening.
Beautiful setting with Evitts Creek flowing through the 189 acre property that is a mix of fields and forest. Hay fields or pasture, there is plenty of space for horses or livestock. Approximately 80 acres are tillable agricultural soil. Outbuildings include a 3 bay garage, 40x60 pole building for equipment storage, dairy house, corn crib and bank barn.
The property is on the National Register of Historic Places with the historic name of Big Bottom Farm or common name of Clauson Farm. Evidence in attic structures and local lore indicate that the property was part of the underground railway. This is truly a unique historic treasure in Western MD.
We enjoy all four seasons of the year here in Western MD. This home is located north of the city of Cumberland, MD near the PA state line, close to Lake Koon and Rocky Gap State Park and Casino Resort. At 4:47 an impressive rock structure is seen, while at 4:50 a quite garden is shown. At 4;14 a mission church is seen in the distance. Driving Through I-80 and Bay Bridge from San Francisco to Oakland
Driving through I-80 which runs east from San Francisco across the Bay Bridge to Oakland,
San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge
The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, known locally as the Bay Bridge or as the Emperor Norton Bridge, is a complex of bridges spanning San Francisco Bay in California. As part of Interstate 80 and the direct road between San Francisco and Oakland, it carries about 260,000 vehicles a day on its two decks.[3][4] It has one of the longest spans in the United States.
The bridge has two sections of roughly equal length; the older western section, officially known as the Willie L. Brown Jr. Bridge (after former San Francisco Mayor and California State Assembly Speaker Willie L. Brown Jr.), connects downtown San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island, and the newer unnamed eastern section connects the island to Oakland. The western section is a double suspension bridge with two decks, westbound traffic being carried on the upper deck while eastbound is carried on the lower one. The largest span of the original eastern section was a cantilever bridge. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a portion of the eastern section's upper deck collapsed onto the lower deck and the bridge was closed for a month. Reconstruction of the eastern section of the bridge as a causeway connected to a self-anchored suspension bridge began in 2002; the new eastern section opened September 2, 2013, at a reported cost of over $6.5 billion, a 2,500% cost overrun from the original estimate of $250 million.[9][10] Unlike the western section and the original eastern section of the bridge, the new eastern section is a single deck with the eastbound and westbound lanes on each side making it the world's widest bridge, according to Guinness World Records,[11] as of 2014. Demolition of the old east span was completed on September 8, 2018.
Day Odyssey Series: Ride to Horseshoe Curve - Altoona PA
Another incredible journey from the Baltimore area to the world-famous Horseshoe Curve! Featuring (of course) classic footage, cool photos and (of course-AGAIN) history! Great fall colors too! Brace yourself for this one! Our day...in west-central PA! Read this description so you'll know what's going on.
As per usual, we begin in the hood, and use an incredibly interesting route to the Horseshoe Curve area, avoiding freeways as much as possible. We pass through many historic towns along the way and make a few interesting stops.
Our first historic stop is at the site of the onetime Allegheny Portage RR, built in the 1830s. This short line was a link in the PA Canal system and used for hauling canal boats over the mountain from one end of the canal at Duncansville to where the canal resumed again near Johnstown. But it was a horrible idea! Due to steep inclined planes the ropes that pulled the flatcars the boats sat on often snapped, causing passenger injury, freight damage, and a lot of insurance claims! The canal system was replaced by what became the PRR, and the portage RR section replaced by a straighter line known as the New Portage RR which included Horseshoe's predecessor, the Muleshoe! Bet you didn't know there was a muleshoe!! Now it's a bike trail.
I included classic VHS footage of the summit of the planes as I couldn't get any closer on this day. You'll see the winch house (which housed stationary steam engines that pulled the ropes) before and after restoration! You'll also see the skewed arch bridge that passed the future US 22 (William Penn Highway) over the portage line and the Lemon House, a onetime passenger stopover.
But even this route proved too roundabout, and in 1854 the PRR had enough and set out to find another route. They eventually settled on a route west from Altoona which involved a sweeping curve around a couple mountain ranges which became Horseshoe Curve! This still involved grades over 1.6 percent, but anything was better than that confounded portage line! By comparison, the B&O's Old Main Line, as originally built, had grades nearing 2 percent, but was rebuilt 1900-1910 and grades cut to below .8 percent-less than their Metropolitan Branch!
Horseshoe, as built, was a 2-track line, with 2 more tracks added a few decades later. In the 1970s it was reduced from 4 to 3 tracks. Altoona Reservoir lies at the bottom within the Horseshoe.
At Horseshoe the action is never-ending!! A train every couple minutes!! I ain't lying!! We get great horn action from many friendly NS engineers! You definitely have to see this!!
Up until the early 1990s one could climb up to the curve for free! Now an admission is charged (sign of the times?), but stay there long enough and it's well worth it, considring all the action!
After the curve we make a side trip to Gallatzin which is at the top of the grade and through which tunnels pass. We then head back to Altoona and after a pit stop we begin our trek back to the big city, passing through State College, Lewistown and Harrisburg on US 322. A great return route! It's a night odyssey at this point but still somewhat interesting.
So, come exploring with us-again, and maybe even learn something! It's a great trip!
Shot November 3 2013. NO CSX here-guaranteed!

Day Odyssey Series: West Central Virginia Ride (US 340/250/301)
Well, here it is-your long-awaited day odyssey! The next in the series!
This one's a bit different than past ones. It's more like the traditional odyssies we used to take once upon a time-no particular place to go! We still pass through interesting places and quaint communities regardless! And even catch a train!
As usual, we begin in our hood in Baltimore. After a quick trip on I-70 we pick up the first of our historic routes-US 340 (a onetime branch route of US 40-and one of my father's all-time favorite routes). We'll skirt Harpers Ferry, then go on to Charles Town WV (where John Brown was tried...and hung) before crossing into Virginia for good.
In Virginia you'll see Berryville, Front Royal, Luray, Shenandoah, Waynesboro (where we pick up US 250), Charlottesville, Richmond, and...Frog Level (along with all points in between)! We'll also pass the Garrett Farm where John Wilkes Booth (another bad John) was captured and killed. And, can't leave out Jurassic Park! YES-I said Jurassic Park!!
US 301 has a special place in my heart. Been traveling that route since I was a year old (but someone else drove) en route to Florida in those bittersweet pre-I-95 days. Then, back to Maryland over a Nice bridge.
ALSO included: classic footage from a December 1996 ride over this route! Compare that with the contemporary footage!
So come join us! After all-we've no particular place to go! By the way-can you tell me who performed that song?
