S02E05 - The review Horseshoe Bike Park DOESN'T want you to see!!
THE PANDA DEN:
WEBSITE:
On this week’s episode of Biking With Panda, we’ll visit a different lift-access park in Ontario – Horseshoe Resort in Barrie.
Right off the bat, I was struck by the lack of staff training. It seemed like no one was familiar with mountain bikes or the trails. No one had any trail maps and there wasn’t one at the summit. They don’t take down ski signs or maps for summer, so it’s easy to get confused.
There are only two trails from the lift and one was closed. I thought Steeplechase was a black diamond but it was actually blue – there is a ski run called Steeplechase that is a black diamond, and that threw me off. It’s got some oddly sized jumps and is pretty steep and flowy all the way down. The rock garden may be tricky, especially if wet. Some jumps are placed in questionable locations. I was quite enjoying the run, when suddenly, it was finished.. about a minute after it started – that’s about a quarter of the duration of Blue’s trails and half the elevation. Right as you’re getting into the groove of things is typically right where the trail ends.
I wanted to find other trails to ride, and since there are no maps, it was rather difficult. I saw some riders go down this hill, so I went that way too. You then have a bullshit climb to do. It was supposedly a fire road, but it felt almost like it transitioned into a trail, and then a service road, leaving me confused, since there weren’t any signs along the way except for the zipline attraction. The climb doesn’t go on forever, but it really feels like it.
I saw a “TRAILS MERGE” sign and wondered if I had actually been on a trail that whole time.
I didn’t want to continue riding off-property and get lost so I turned down onto an unmarked trail from the service road. It was incredibly steep and once I got down there, it was a truly annoying trail. Janky rotting woodwork with banked jumps that have no landing to speak of. Stuff I’m not really interested in. I ended up blasting straight down the hill just to get back to the fire road.
Their description of how to find the other trails was laughable, “just ride along the service road for who knows how long until you find the zipline tower and 6 trails off that”. Must have been a 2 kilometer ride before I found it. The whole time I was wondering why use the lift at all? Why buy a pass if you have to grind up every time? There are better trails for less money. Exactly.
Horseshoe Resort was not a happy place to be
A note about the downhill bikes; at this time they only have 140mm hardtails for rent, nothing bigger and no full suspension – it’s not really needed at all, anyway.
I tried Steeplechase a second time - if that is even the trail’s name – trying to get some speed and air, but found myself hitting personal limits.
The longer trails are very pedally – some sections are entirely uphill. I imagine this will only get worse as they add more trails further away from the lift. I am not sure why the trail builders squander their elevation so quickly. More gradual and longer descent would be preferable to these short and unfulfilling ones.
Horseshoe has been an open question since I first heard of it last year. It is somewhat new and less publicised than Blue, and videos are grainy; it’s hard to tell what’s going on.
This place feels like it really half-asses the mountain bike experience, the fact that they only open the bike park on weekends until July sort-of cements the whole “mountain biking as a second-class experience at Horseshoe” feeling.
I think if the resort properly trains their staff, designs better trails, maybe with the help of Gravity Logic, and reduce the lift ticket cost, they could have more patronage and expand their operations even further.
I’m planning a long out of province trip and if you sign up for the Panda Den on Patreon, you can learn more - Patreon is a community where you can connect with me, get bonus content and early releases. I post frequently, and ensure you get value from your subscription. I’ve got some camper updates coming, but until next time, you know what to do... go ride!

Nighttime sights and sounds of Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls.
This is walking night video recorded with the GoPro HERO7 Black. I had the camera set at 2704x1520(2.7k), Linear FOV, 30fps. The Bozeman Trail: A Rush to Montana's Gold
The Bozeman Trail was an offshoot of the Oregon Trail, a shortcut to the newly discovered gold fields of Montana Territory. Cutting through the heart of Indian country. It became a flash point for a clash of cultures that would explode into warfare, destruction and tragedy. First telecast March, 2019.
Colebrookdale Railroad: The Return of Steam to the Secret Valley feat. Viscose no. 6-May 28, 2016
On a warm spring day, we headed up to the Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown, PA to catch Viscose Company 0-6-0ST no. 6 (built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925). The Secret Valley Line was built from 1865-1869 and the original Colebrookdale Railroad operated it until it was leased to the Reading Railroad in the early 20th century.
The Reading operated the line until Conrail began operations in 1976. Conrail planned to abandon the line until the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania acquired the line. In 1989, the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad (now the Reading, Blue Mountain, & Northern or Reading & Northern), under a contract with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, began freight and excursion operations on the Colebrookdale Branch.
In 2001, Berks County acquired the railroad line to keep it active. Sometime between 2003-2006, East Penn Railways, Inc. acquired the line for freight service. In 2007, East Penn Railways, Inc. and Penn Eastern Rail Lines, Inc. merged to form the East Penn Railroad, LLC. East Penn Railroad abandoned the Colebrookdale branch in 2008.
In 2010, the Colebrookdale Railroad Preservation Trust brought freight service back to the branch under the trade name Eastern Berks Gateway Railroad (still operates today under the Colebrookdale Railroad). The idea that the line should be used for excursion surface came around 2011 and in 2014, test trips were made on the new Colebrookdale Railroad. The Colebrookdale Railroad's first full season of excursions was in 2015.
In collaboration with Boyertown's 150th anniversary, the Colebrookdale Railroad arranged for Viscose no. 6 to lead excursion trains on the line. The Colebrookdale Railroad is currently restoring their own steam locomotive, former US Army no. 5002.

How This Man Profited $1 Billion Betting on Hong Kong Horse Races
Bill Benter, is a reserved unassuming and media shy pittsburg resident who made almost 1 billion dollars by gambling on horse races.
The man was a mathematical genius who was on the cutting edge of both computer science and statistical modelling so it is widely assumed with his business knowledge that he could have made money just about anywhere, in a rare interview when asked about his success in horse racing he said, “I was driven only partly by money, I believe I probably could have made more money in finance, but that didn’t interest me, I didn’t get into professional horse racing because it was hard, but because it was said to be impossible”
I am now moving to an upload schedule of every week on Wednesday.
As always I have attached references to this video below. If you have any further questions please feel free to discuss in the comments section and I will do my very best to answer everything to the best of my ability.

Beaver Wars - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Beaver Wars—also known as the Iroquois Wars or the French and Iroquois Wars—encompass a series of conflicts fought in the mid-17th century in eastern North America.
Encouraged and armed by their Dutch and English trading partners, the Iroquois sought to expand their territory and monopolize the fur trade and the trade between European markets and the tribes of the western Great Lakes region. The conflict pitted the nations of the Iroquois Confederation, led by the dominant Mohawk, against the French-backed and largely Algonquian-speaking tribes of the Great Lakes region.
The wars were brutal and are considered one of the bloodiest series of conflicts in the history of North America. As the Iroquois succeeded in the war and enlarged their territory, they realigned the tribal geography of North America, and destroyed several large tribal confederacies—including the Huron, Neutral, Erie, Susquehannock, and Shawnee—and pushed some eastern tribes west of the Mississippi River, or southward into the Carolinas. The Iroquois also controlled the Ohio Valley lands as hunting ground, from about 1670 onward, as far as can be determined from contemporary French accounts. The Ohio Country and the Lower Peninsula of Michigan were virtually emptied of Native people as refugees fled westward to escape Iroquois warriors.
Both Algonquian and Iroquoian societies were greatly disrupted by these wars. The conflict subsided with the loss by the Iroquois of their Dutch allies in the New Netherland colony, and with a growing French objective to gain the Iroquois as an ally against English encroachment. After the Iroquois became trading partners with the English, their alliance was a crucial component of the later English expansion. They used the Iroquois conquests as a claim to the old Northwest Territory.

Canada (play /ˈkænədə/) is a North American country consisting of ten provinces and three territories. Located in the northern part of the continent, it extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area. Canada's common border with the United States to the south and northwest is the longest in the world.
The land that is now Canada was inhabited for millennia by various groups of Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French expeditions explored, and later settled, along the Atlantic coast. France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. This began an accretion of provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy from the United Kingdom. This widening autonomy was highlighted by the Statute of Westminster 1931 and culminated in the Canada Act 1982, which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the British parliament.
Canada is a federal state that is governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is a bilingual nation with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. One of the world's highly developed countries, Canada has a diversified economy that is reliant upon its abundant natural resources and upon trade—particularly with the United States, with which Canada has had a long and complex relationship. It is a member of the G7, G8, G20, NATO, OECD, WTO, Commonwealth of Nations, Francophonie, OAS, APEC, and UN. With the eighth-highest Human Development Index globally, it has one of the highest standards of living in the world.
Canada occupies a major northern portion of North America, sharing the land borders with the contiguous United States to the south and the U.S. state of Alaska to the northwest, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west; to the north lies the Arctic Ocean.[74][75] By total area (including its waters), Canada is the second-largest country in the world, after Russia. By land area, Canada ranks fourth.[75]
The country lies between latitudes 41° and 84°N, and longitudes 52° and 141°W. Since 1925, Canada has claimed the portion of the Arctic between 60° and 141°W longitude,[76] but this claim is not universally recognized. The northernmost settlement in Canada (and in the world) is Canadian Forces Station Alert on the northern tip of Ellesmere Island—latitude 82.5°N—817 kilometres (450 nautical miles, 508 miles) from the North Pole.[77] Much of the Canadian Arctic is covered by ice and permafrost. Canada also has the longest coastline in the world: 202,080 kilometres (125,570 mi).[75]
A semi-circular waterfall between two outcrops of forest
The Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is one of the world's most voluminous waterfalls,[78] renowned both for its beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power.
Since the last glacial period Canada has consisted of eight distinct forest regions, including extensive boreal forest on the Canadian Shield.[79] Canada has more lakes than any other country, containing much of the world's fresh water.[80] There are also fresh-water glaciers in the Canadian Rockies and the Coast Mountains. Canada is geologically active, having many earthquakes and potentially active volcanoes, notably Mount Meager, Mount Garibaldi, Mount Cayley, and the Mount Edziza volcanic complex.[81] The volcanic eruption of Tseax Cone in 1775 caused a catastrophic disaster, killing 2,000 Nisga'a people and destroying their village in the Nass River valley of northern British Columbia; the eruption produced a 22.5-kilometre (14.0 mi) lava flow, and according to legend of the Nisga'a people, it blocked the flow of the Nass River.[82]
The population density, 3.3 inhabitants per square kilometre (8.5 /sq mi), is among the lowest in the world. The most densely populated part of the country is the Quebec City -- Windsor Corridor, situated in Southern Quebec and Southern Ontario along the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence River.[83]

We've been fortunate enough to escape the Canadian winter and the bitter cold, snowy weather we've had there this year by driving 6000 kms away from home to Baja California Sur, Mexico. Ever wondered what it'd be like to pack yourself into a tiny house and head south with the birds?! We'll show ya ;)
Today's van life vlog begins in Cabo Pulmo National Park where we jump right into our first snorkel in this beautiful underwater marine world! Then, in true van life Mexico fashion we get our tiny house stuck in some soft sand on the beach... thank goodness for our Max Traxx! As Eamon says the most consistent thing about life in Baja California is the sunsets so we enjoy a beautiful one with you and head to sleep! Day 2 begins with a failed water sport event and a grumpy Bec. Don't fret, we can't stay grumpy for long when we live in our van on a stunning beach for FREE! We then head into town for some essentials and back out to another snorkel spot along the national park. The vlog wraps with a tour of our new friends tiny house (it's a motorcycle and a tent!) and a camp fire sing along! AHHHH, van life in Baja x
We have loved living in a van (self converted sprinter van) for the last year and a half and while we enjoy spending time in Canada it can get a little cold throughout the winter. So, we've decided to hit the road and drive across the continent to enjoy some warmer weather in Baja Mexico. If our last trip to this country taught us anything... it's to expect the unexpected!!
