Joseph Rossi's 'Supercelestial' at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery with Dadaprojects
An exciting new aerial art gallery has been created in Horsham’s streets to display a thought-provoking new installation of works that examines the relationship between colour and personality.
For the first time, Horsham Piazza Italia have included the art of Italy as part of their festival, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Dadaprojects has partnered with Horsham Museum and Art Gallery to bring Supercelestial by Joseph Rossi to horsham.
The exhibition takes the form of an outdoor installation along East Street, with original art pieces available for viewing at the Museum.
Many people throughout history have changed the colour of the world. Through their lives they have spread messages of change and hope and have made a difference that continues to shine through the ages. In Supercelestial, Joseph Rossi has taken the essence of these leaders and distilled them into the colours of the colour industry’s standard palette.
‘So in this way, a pure and simple list of colours from now on and forever becomes a list of the most consecrated heroes and the most glorious names.
From now on a white, which in painting will have the value of the purest white, could be said to be Gandhi White. A certain shade of red, the strongest red, from now could be said to be Che Guevara Red. A black in painting that can be said to be the most severe and deep black, is Martin Luther King Black’ - Salvatore Fazia, Italian poet and writer
Dadaprojects, a not-for-profit organisation, encourages the work of artists outside the conventional confines of the art scene. It aims to facilitate the interaction between the public and art and promote cultural and artistic exchange internationally, delivering high quality and memorable experiences.
‘I believe in the strength of artistic union and social integration through the Arts; by using art as a common language we are combating elitism and making art available to everybody.’ Stefania Dal Ferro, Dadaprojects’ Founder and Director.
Welcome to Horsham Museum & Art Gallery
Horsham Museum is a museum at Horsham, West Sussex, in South East England. It was founded in August 1893 by volunteers of the Free Christian (now Unitarian) Church and became part of Horsham District Council in 1974.
We are a fully accredited museum and serves both Horsham and its district with the support of the Friends of Horsham Museum and an active volunteer base.
The Museum has a large and varied collection arranged in 18 galleries. It has a significant collection of books and memorabilia relating to the Warnham-born poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822), including many early editions of his works and that of his second wife Mary Shelley (1797–1851). It also possesses original letters and books relating to the wider Shelley circle.
The Horsham Museum owns a number of prints by local artist John Guille Millais (1865–1931). They also have a significant sculpture by Millais of fighting game birds that is now on permanent display
Other collections include ceramics, ethnography, local Sussex trades and industries, working life, geology, archaeology, bicycles, and horses. A particular feature of the Museum's collections is the Archive of documents relating to Horsham and its history, including the collection of William Albery.
The Curator's Library has over 2,000 books on the Museum's collections and can be consulted upon request.

Frankenstein at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery
Born on 30th August 1797, Mary was the daughter of philosopher William Godwin, and the famous women’s rights advocate and author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary Shelley’s radical, intellectual pedigree was visible from an early age and she was described by her father as “singularly bold, somewhat imperious, and active of mind”.
In 1814 when Mary was just 16, despite her father’s objections to her married suitor, she eloped to Switzerland with the romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Percy was born in Warnham, Sussex and his father Sir Timothy Shelley was MP for Horsham from 1790-92. Mary herself briefly lived at Field Place, Warnham as well as Castle Goring near Worthing.
Mary Shelley began writing her debut novel in 1816, when she was just 18 years old. Frankenstein was first published two years later in 1818. Despite its advanced age, the story still has relevance for modern readers. Considered to be one of the earliest science fiction novels, from the moment it was published, until the present day, Mary’s story has featured in magazines, comics, plays, films, television.
Our family-friendly summer exhibition will tell the story of Mary Shelley’s famous monster, a tale that still chills and entertains 200 years after its publication. Using fascinating items from the collections, and animatronic models, this exhibition will explore Mary’s life, work and relationships, and how she came to write the one of the most iconic novels in history, Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus.
