The London Brighton & South Coast Railway Stations of T H Myres
During the 1880's architect Thomas Harrison Myres (1859 - 1910) designed some very distinctive railway stations for the London Brighton & South Coast Railway on four branch lines. All the stations, with the exception of East Grinstead & Eridge, were of a similar design, using a tudor country house style, but in all cases, these were later covered by tile hung exteriors. Despite early closure of lines first by the Southern Railway and later by Beeching, all but five of the station buildings survive.Going from east to west,The Cuckoo Line opened north of Hailsham in 1880 this part of the line closed to passengers in June 1965.This line joined what is now the Uckfield Line,a mile south of Eridge, the station here was rebuilt in 1880. The Lewes to East Grinstead Line opened in 1882,this left the line used to run north to Oxted at Culver Junction, this finally closed in 1958,part of this still survives being the preserved Bluebell Railway, this runs north from Sheffield Park to a new platform at East Grinstead. Lastly the Midhurst to Chichester Line, this opened in 1881,at the same time a new station was built at Midhurst, the line south closed to passengers as early as 1935,but with goods traffic lasting until 1953, at Lavant goods traffic lasted until 1970.Midhurst lost it's passenger services to Pulborough in 1955 and it's goods services in 1964 . A few of the stations at Newick & Chailey,Horam and Midhurst were demolished for housing developement. At West Hoathly the station was demolished in 1967 and only the base of the platforms remain, the land was purchased by the Bluebell Railway for their northern extension project. In 1880 Myres had also had been responsible for Hassocks 2nd station on the Brighton main line. This was demolished along with the Mocatta original in 1973. In April 2013,the last surviving Myre's goods shed at Singleton was given grade 2 listed status.
