Hortus Botanicus is a botanical garden in the Plantage district of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. One of the oldest in the world, it is one of Amsterdam's major tourist attractions. Hortus Botanicus is a big and attractive Amsterdam botanical garden, with more than 6 000 different plants. Some the plants are unique as 2000 years old agave cactus and a 300-year-old Eastern Kape giant cycad. The big new hothouse creates conditions for three different tropical climates. There is also Semicircle systematic garden, were plants are grown in a way to show the systematic relation between them and two suggested visiting routes through the Hortus – The Evolution Route and The Tree Route with 24 monumental trees to see. A Wonderful Green Oasis in the middle of Amsterdam.
The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is an attractive Amsterdam botanical garden founded in 1638 by the Amsterdam City Council to serve as a herb garden for doctors and apothecaries. The garden covers merely 1.2 ha with more than 4 000 plant species from across all the continents and represent seven different climates, including the old Palmhouse, a butterfly greenhouse and tree climate greenhouse which has desert, sub-tropical and tropical climates.
Some of the plants are unique, they were brought here from all over the world by the traders of the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
The garden is a well-organized botanical garden, it is a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours, very quiet, calm feeling, beautiful and peaceful, which is perfect to get away from the crowd of Amsterdam.
Hortus Botanicus has a beautiful café, located in the recently renovated Orangery with large nice outside terrace open to the beautiful garden and a very nice Hortus store on the way to the exit route of the garden.

Hortus Botanicus Tour — Plant One On Me — Ep 075
Hortus Botanicus based in Amsterdam, Netherlands is steeped in history. It was established back in 1638 by the city municipality. Originally it was named the Hortus Medicus, which focused as a medicinal herb garden, as it was a response to the outbreak of the plague that was ravaging the area. Now, however, it serves as a respite for itinerant passersby and locals.
Though I went in the dead of winter, the interiorscapes of the botanic gardens had much to see, including some drool-worthy cycads with their own stories to tell.
Special thanks to Reinout for taking time out to give us a tour. And I do apologize for the audio. Some parts were quite noisy due to the greenhouse operations there. More information on the Hortus can be found here:

Visit to Amsterdam City, Hortus Botanicus 2017 Netherlands Travel
#Hortus #Botanicus is a botanical garden in the Plantage district of #Amsterdam, the #Netherlands. One of the oldest in the world, it is one of Amsterdam's major tourist attractions.
Hortus Botanicus was founded in 1638 by the city to serve as an herb garden for doctors and apothecaries. It contains more than six thousand tropical and indigenous trees and plants. The monumental Palm House dates from 1912 and is renowned for its collection of cycads.
The hexagonal pavilion dates from the late 1600s. The entrance gate was built in the early 1700s. The Orangery dates from 1875, and the Palm House and Hugo de Vries Laboratory - both created in Amsterdam School expressionist architecture - date from 1912 and 1915.
The garden was almost bankrupt in 1987 when the University of Amsterdam stopped paying its expenses, but a community of individual supporters prevented its closure. Now the Hortus Botanicus is supported by the Amsterdam City Council as well.
There are also two halls at the garden which are now used for conferences and ceremonies, and a cafe serves as meeting point for locals.
Hortus Botanicus is now a popular attraction for both Dutch and international visitors. The collection is famous for some of its trees and plants, some of which are on the danger list. Well-known plants and trees can be found there, like the Persian ironwood tree which is known in Dutch as Perzische Parrotia.
Hortus Botanicus's initial collection was amassed during the 17th century through plants and seeds brought back by traders of the East India Company (VOC) for use as medicines and for their possibilities for commerce. A single coffee plant, Coffea arabica, in Hortus's collection served as the parent for the entire coffee culture in Central and South America.
Likewise, two small potted oil palms brought back by the VOC from Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, produced seeds after six years, and these were propagated throughout all of Southeast Asia, becoming a major source of revenue in the Dutch East Indies and now in Indonesia.
Hugo de Vries was the director of the garden during 1885–1918.
Recent additions to Hortus include a huge hothouse, which incorporates three different tropical climates.
Thank you very much for views, comments and likes!
Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam in winter
On a cold winter day there is a lot to see in the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. With three hothouses you can walk through a jungle in very comfortable warmth and take in the baffling plant life (and turtles and butterflies).
