The botanical gardens of Leiden are home to many exotic and rare plants. Among these are the carnivorous Nepenthes or Pitcher plants which form one of our key collections. But why do we grow them and do all of them really eat animals?

Samen met vriendin Tine de Jong waren wij op bezoek bij de botanische tuin van Leiden, de oudste botanische tuin van Nederland. Deze oase van rust viert dit jaar haar 425ste verjaardag en is verbonden met de naam Carolus Clusius, de stichter van deze tuin. Het is de oudste Hortus van Nederland. Door de eeuwen heen maakte de tuin uitbreidingen en vernieuwingen mee die tot heden een prachtig staaltje natuur opleveren. Naast dit wonderlijk natuurschoon kan iedere bezoeker ook kennis maken met diverse kassen en thematuinen die een voor een te moeite waard zijn om deze van dichtbij te bestuderen en/of verkennen. Enkele borstbeelden van bekende plantkundigen staan kris kras verspreid in de botanische tuin. Hier bruist geur, kleur, geluid en activiteit. Bezoek ook eens het YouTube kanaal van vriendin Tine de Jong waar je ook haar indrukken van deze botanische tuin zal ontmoeten. Bijzonder en uniek!
A walk in the Hortus botanicus ( English : Botanical garden ) in the Dutch city of Leiden, province South Holland, Netherlands. I was impressed by the spring colours and odors of the ferns, flowers, plants, trees and many more. A travel trip for the one who loves nature and its diversity and richness. There are also living exceptional plant species.
Naast films voor mijn YouTube kanaal schrijf ik ook allerhande gedichten en teksten op de gezamenlijke blogsite waar de mens en de natuur centraal staan. Het is tevens de naam van de site ( De Mens en de Natuur ), welke ik deel met natuurvriendin, fotografe en creatieve schrijfster Tine de Jong. Er bestaat ook een gelijknamig YouTube kanaal waar je onder meer onze gezamenlijke wandelingen terug zal vinden.
Bovendien heb ik ook een persoonlijke blog waar ik ook regelmatig woord en beeld deel. Een absolute aanrader om een voor een kennis te maken. Zowel op de al genoemde YouTube kanalen als de blogs kan je mij en mijn vriendin volgen of gratis een abonnement nemen.

Leiden is a city in the Dutch province of South Holland. It’s known for its centuries-old architecture and for Leiden University, the country’s oldest, dating from 1575. The university houses the Hortus botanicus Leiden Botanical Garden, founded in 1590, where the tulip was introduced to Western Europe. The Museum de Lakenhal displays works by the Dutch Masters including Rembrandt, who was born in Leiden.

Bijzondere kas voor Hortus Botanicus Leiden
LEIDEN - De Hortus Botanicus heeft vrijdag een nieuwe kas geopend met
speciale bloembollen. In de schoorsteenvormige kas staan alle
bloembollen die al zijn uitgekomen. De bloemen die nog niet bloeien
worden verzorgd in platte bakken en worden verhuisd naar de nieuwe kas
als ze uit komen.

In the Hortus of Leiden we grow around 4.000 orchid species on which we do research. For example investigate the chemical content of vanilla and find out whether it has medicinal properties. Occasionally we discover new orchid species. In this video we show how new species are depicted, given a new name and get internationally recognized.
